An Air France jet carrying 228 people from Rio de Janeiro to Paris lost contact with air traffic controllers over the Atlantic Ocean, an Air France official said Monday. Brazil immediately began a search mission off its northeastern coast.
Air France Flight 447, an Airbus A330, was carrying 216 passengers and 12 crew members, company spokeswoman Brigitte Barrand said.
The plane disappeared about 186 miles (300 kilometers) northeast of the coastal Brazilian city of Natal, near the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, an air force spokesman said. Brazil's air force said a search began Monday morning near Fernando de Noronha, he added, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with Air Force policy.
An official with the French government's transport agency said contact with the plane was lost at 0220 GMT Monday (10:20 p.m. EDT Sunday). The official was not authorized to be named according to agency policy.
Barrand said the airline installed an information center at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport for the families of those aboard.
Air France regrets to announce that it is without news from Air France flight 447 flying from Rio to Paris, she said. Air France shares the emotion and worry of the families concerned.
The flight was scheduled to arrive in Paris at 0915 GMT (5:15 a.m. EDT), according to the airport.
Airbus declined to comment until more details emerge.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy expressed his extreme worry and sent the junior minister for transport, Dominique Bussereau, and Environment Minister Jean-Louis Borloo to Charles de Gaulle airport to monitor the situation.
Associated Press reporters Emma Vandore, Laurent Lemel and Laurent Pirot reported from Paris.

STORYLINE:
A Brazilian air force spokesman on Wednesday said more debris from the crashed Air France jet had been spotted.
The new debris includes what appears to be a seven-meter (23-foot) long chunk of the plane.
Brazilian air force spokesman Colonel Jorge Amaral said there were no obvious markings that would identify the jet.
Amaral said no bodies were seen in the latest wreckage, which was spotted about 90 kilometres (55 miles) south of where the main debris field lies.
Also spotted were about 10 other metal objects and an oil slick stretching about 20 kilometres in the area.
The main debris field lies about 400 miles (640 kilometres) northeast of the Fernando de Noronha islands off Brazil's northern coast.
Major Duarte, speaking in Fernando De Noronha, said his party had been searching all day and night, not only because it is our professional duty but it is our humanitarian obligation (to do so) and our way to show solidarity with the victims.
A C-130 was taking part of the search and rescue and the Brazilian Air Force is also using a Blackhawk helicopter to bring any possible debris to Fernando De Noronha.
Military planes and ships struggled through high seas and heavy winds Wednesday and although more debris were found an investigator said the black boxes may never be found in the depths of the Atlantic.
Rescue vessels from several nations were sailing toward the site to start the recovery as aviation experts tried to determine why the plane carrying 228 people from Rio de Janeiro to Paris on Sunday night ended up in the sea.

This type of memorial should not be determined by an airline. The airline is not the one who speaks on behalf of the relatives, nobody asked us if we wanted this memorial. If they would have asked us, we would have said that we don't want this type of ceremony. If anything, we would have wanted it to have occurred in Fernando de Noronha, which is closer to where the accident actually happened. This has nothing to do with it.

I think the French government and Air France need to assume responsibility towards us in order to put an end to our suffering. I am not saying that you could put a price tag on any life, but it would help alleviate our suffering.

STORYLINE:
Dozens of relatives of the victims of the crashed Air France flight 447 gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, to inaugurate a memorial in honour of the 228 people that died on board nearly six months ago.
The ceremony, which was organised by the airline and Rio de Janeiro's city government, was closed to the press and relied on a tight security system which intercepted all access to the Dois Irmaos national park in the upscale beach neighbourhood of Leblon.
The relatives, many of whom were flown in from abroad by the airline and housed at a nearby hotel, were transported to the ceremony in several buses which were given credentials by the organisers.
According to a written statement released by the French foreign ministry Friday, the country's cooperation minister Alain Joyandet and French government's ambassador to the victims Pierre-Jean Vandoorne were also scheduled to attend.
Not all however agreed that the ceremony should have taken place. Nelson Marinho, the president of the Brazilian Association of Relatives of Air France 447 Victims, said that the memorial had taken place against his wishes.
If they would have asked us, we would have said we don't want this type of ceremony. If anything, we would have wanted it to have occurred in Fernando de Noronha, which is closer to where the accident actually happened, he said.
The visiting relatives are scheduled to throw a floral offering into the sea in honour of the victims.
The Paris-bound flight left Rio de Janeiro on May 31 and disappeared off the radar somewhere along the Atlantic.
The boxes are believed to be somewhere on the ocean floor at extreme depths.

Hang Loose Pro Contest 2012 - Day 1 highlights
CACIMBA DO PADRE, Fernando de Noronha, Pernambuco / Brazil (Tuesday, February, 07, 2012) - Cacimba do Padre beach on the islands of Fernando de Noronha located 545 kilometers off the coast of Brazil is home to the ASP Prime Hang Loose Pro Contest. After a full week of poor conditions, sunny skies and a swell in the 4-6 foot range (1.5-2 meters) welcomed 96 of the world's top surfers for the first ASP PRIME event of 2012.
Ricardo dos Santos (BRA), had the day's highest heat-wave total with a 17.33 out of a possible 20 points in Heat 4 of Round 1. Santos scored a 9.33 on his highest scoring barrel during the first day of competition.
There are great waves, but I got really lucky, said Santos. I spent the last three months getting barreled in Hawaii, so I've got a good idea of what to do. But I got lucky because everyone else in the water can do the same thing. I just think my positioning was what made the difference and being in the right place at the right time.
With 16.84 points, Jay Quinn (NZL) had the second highest heat-wave total scoring an 8.67 and 8.17 on his two best waves. I'm stoked to have won that heat, said Quinn. Everything worked out, I found some good waves and I hope to keep doing well.
The two top seeds of the event also qualified into the next round, both coming in 2nd place in their respective heats. The number 1 seed, Gabriel Medina (BRA) caught a tube ride followed by a frontside air to defeat Tim Reyes (USA) and Caia de Souza (BRA) in their heat won by Jeronimo Vargas (BRA).
Conditions got really tough in my heat and I just tried to stay close to the point, where I thought the waves were better, said Medina. I'd like to catch some better waves in the event because my objective here is to win the contest.
Damien Hobgood (USA), who arrived as the number 2 seed in the event also qualified behind Bernardo Miranda (BRA) in their heat over Gony Zubizarreta (SPA) and Alex Ribeiro (BRA).
I rather by lucky than good! said Hobgood. That wave was great and that tube just opened up cleanly. The conditions were good in the beginning but a strong current changed things and I couldn't catch anything else after that.
Stu Kennedy (AUS) was another international surfer who guaranteed his spot into the next round.
I spent a lot of money to get here, said Kennedy. The trip was really long, so I couldn't afford to lose. I wasn't too confident on my backhand and felt more at ease on the rights. It's my first time to Noronha and I'm just stoked to make my heat in such a beautiful place.
Competition continues tomorrow at 8am (local time) with 2010 Hang Loose Pro Contest Winner CJ Hobgood (USA), Sebastien Zietz (HAW), Messias Felix (BRA) and Yan Guimaraes hitting the water in Heat 17 of Round 1.
The Hang Loose Pro Contest is an ASP South America sanctioned event and is the introductory ASP World Prime event of 2012, sponsored by Hang Loose and in partnership with the State of Pernambuco through EMPETUR, the Secretary of Tourism, the Administration of Fernando de Noronha, Projeto TAMAR and co-sponsored by Overboard, Bleat, Hot Water, Central Surf, Sthill, WQSurf, Tent Beach, Star Surf, Supertubes, K&K, Cut Wave and Red Beach. The event comes with the support of the Pernambuco Surf Federation, the Northeastern Surf Association, Fluir Magazine and Waves Website.
