FIRST TIME IN A HOT AIR BALLOON! & Magical Sunset Ride in France
What better way to learn about wine than drinking all morning?! After visiting the tallest castle in France, we tour the vineyards of Chateau de Brissac. But the best part of the day was seeing the Loire Valley from a (nerve-wrecking) hot air balloon ride. ????

Château d’Amboise • A Royal Residence of the Kings of France for 200 Years
We drive to Amboise on the banks of the Loire, where we visit the Royal Château d’Amboise, a royal residence of the Kings of France for 200 years.
Amboise is a bustling little town, most often visited for its imposing royal Château d'Amboise, built in the 15th century and the first structure in France to reflect the influence of the Italian Renaissance. Charles VIII, France's first Renaissance king, built his château on a rocky spar separating the valleys of the Loire and Amasse. Amboise became the residence of the queen and her children. Catherine de Medici loved Amboise and lived there.
The River Cher
The River Cher was first canalized and used for navigation beginning in the 1830's. The 34-mile portion of the river that is still navigable today uses 14 locks to go from Larçay, just east of Tours, to Noyers-sur-Cher at the junction with the restored portion of the Canal de Berry.
The Cher crosses a broad valley bordered by gentle hills. The barge route passes through the heart of the Loire Valley, taking travelers through lovely countryside with picturesque villages, historical attractions, and spectacular châteaus, including Chenonceau.
The Loire Valley
The spectacular Loire Valley and its main tributary, the River Cher, have carried cargo and passengers for over 2000 years, since pre-Roman times as it winds through sandbanks to the Atlantic Ocean. The Valley of the Kings is a timeless region of spectacular beauty and grace and we are delighted to offer the only hotel barge cruising through its heart.
The Loire Valley is as rich in legend as it is in beauty; here the aristocracy of France have built their castles and palaces over the centuries and you will realise that, fortunately, little has changed. Talk to a cheesemaker and find out why his is the most famous goat’s cheese in France. Wind your way through the narrow streets of a centuries-old village, perhaps discovering hidden shops with hand-painted pottery, or stumble across an open market on your own.
Hotel Barge Nymphea
Nymphea’s Dutch design with its shallow draft makes her the ideal vessel for navigating the beautiful sandy reaches of the River Cher in the Loire Valley. No other hotel barge cruises this magical waterway.
Her traditional interior, reminiscent of a classic yacht, features a warm décor of rich varnished hardwoods, stained glass and shining brass. The traditionally furnished saloon and dining area have a warm and welcoming country house atmosphere and there is an additional upper saloon area with more comfortable seating to relax in. Nymphea has three compact, but comfortable cabins, two twin staterooms and one twin or double stateroom, all with air conditioning and en-suite facilities.
Outside, the sun deck offers the perfect vantage point from which to admire the next picturesque waterside village, elegant chateau, or stunning stretch of scenery as it slowly comes into view. You will even get to cruise through the arches of probably the most-photographed château in the Loire Valley, Château de Chenonceau – not once, but twice – a rare privilege afforded to very few boats!
And if you wish to explore the River Cher’s towpath and surrounding countryside, there are 6 bicycles available for your use.
Nymphea’s crew of Captain/Tour Leader and Master Chef are most knowledgeable about the history, wine and cuisine of the region and they will be there to help make your journey through the ‘Valley of the Kings of France’ truly unforgettable.
What is Hotel Barging?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especially on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.
This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.
Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. About half of European Waterways’ bookings are for whole boat charters, ideal for families. Otherwise, clients book a cabin to join other like-minded people. A ‘slow boat’ European Waterways barge cruise offers the ultimate in experiential travel. A truly unique experience!

My first hot air balloon ride was over the Loire Valley in France. Such an exciting adventure for this American expat in Uzès

We flew with two balloon over the Chenonceau Palace in the Loire Valley not far from Tours.
We had to wake up super early in the morning to be able to fly at sun rise. Then, full with hot air, took over in a field just by Chateau de Chenonceau. After flying for an hour, we landed to the east of the Loire Valley

Balloon ride magic over France countryside
Hot Air Ballooning in Loire Valley, France 2013
During a trip to France in May, 2013 I found myself on my very first Hot Air Balloon ride. The Loire valley is quite a beautiful location to see from any perspective; it is home to numerous Chateaus, vineyards, picturesque villages, and the rolling countryside. I couldn't resist the opportunity to share this experience... enjoy!
Linières-Bouton, Pays De La Loire, France
Just a short walk from Moulin Bregeon is the lovely...small...town of Linières-Bouton. It is slowly and lovingly being restored, combining elements the necessary elements of our modern day, with the quaintness of it's history and place in the Loire Valley.

Hot Air Balloon Ride in France
I was walking past a field in October when I saw strange activity. It was a group of people waiting to see whether the wind would die down enough so that they could fly past the Loire River and its chateaux. The wind died down, the montgolfier team from Balloon Revolution in Amboise started working, and I got to watch the process..
Hot Air Balloon over the Loire Valley ... or Not.. Travels with my wife
An experience we wanted to live. A voyage in a hot air Balloon, Montgolfiere, over the Loire valley and its castles. We stayed at a small pleasant hotel, le Bon Laboureur, that we can highly recommend, and therefore, were than close to the action. Early morning call, small streets still in the dark, we made our way to the parking of the train station to meet with other enthousiats. 2 companies were waiting for their customers. We obvioulsy chose the wrong one. The pilot of France Montgolfiere was showing tiredness, and no desire to go to work. On the parking lot, he insinuated that the weather was not good and the winds were bad. but, the other company, loaded their landrovers with it's passengers, and departed for the takeoff field .. so,our pilot followed and we departed as well. The pilot had no intention of flying, he kept telling us the weather was wrong. So we watched the other group go fly ! Getting a refund was very difficult. We had to call sevral times and they kept telling us it was good for a year to come back some other day. The fact we lived in the US and may not come back, did not deter them. We finally obtained a refund.. Lesson learned ... Make sure you do not use France Montgolfiere and make sure you can get a refund immediatly if the flight is canceled.
9. Château de Blois
8. De Sully Sur Loire
7. Le Château de Langeais
6. Chateau Villandry
5. Château des Ducs de Bretagne
Despite the name, this chateau is not situated in the province of Bretagne or (Brittany in English) but in the heart of the city of Nantes, in western France, in the Loire-Atlantique department. However it was apart of Bretagne up until 1941. It served as the residence for the Dukes of Brittany and is entirely surrounded by a moat. In 1466 it was reconstructed with. This chateaux serves as a museum to visitors of Nantes currently whichs hosts a variety of different exhibits. Originally built as a military fortress, that role disappeared in the late 16th century. The most notable historical event that took places here was the signing of the Edict of Nantes, which gave protestants newly found rights at a time when France was primarily Catholic.
4. Château de Chantilly
Finally we venture off from the the renaissance style Loire River valley chateaux and in to the town of Chantilly, located Northeast of Paris. This chateau is comprised of two main part s, the Petit Chateau built in the 16th century and the Grand Chateau which was destroyed d uring the French Revolution but later repaired in the 1870’s. What you mostly need to know abo ut this chateau is that it’s the current location of the Musée Condé
which houses the 2nd largest collection of paintings in France only after the Louvre. This includes works by Raphael, Fra Angelico, Nicholas Poussin.
3. Fountainebleau
Located Southwest of Paris, the Fontainebleau is certainly one of largest chateaux and palaces in France. Its origins date back to the 1100’s and used by French Royalty from Louis VII to
Napoleon III. Completely surrounded by forests and artificial lakes, it was a favorite hunting lodge of Royalty. The medieval castle that stood at this location was given a serious upgrade by the architect, Gilles Le Breton once again by Francois I. King Henry the IV made additional upgrades to the palace, devoting much time to the parks and gardens around the chateau. This lavish palace even served as a prison to Pope Pius after Napoleon had conquered the papal states. It continued to serve as the residence for Napoleon and Napoleon’s relatives, and their bedrooms were quite decorated! Many leaders of France have had their own bedroom here but one of the most impressive is that of Queen-Mother Anne of Austria, that we see here. The history of this amazing chateau continues even 2nd world war where it was used as a headquarters for Nato until 1966.
2. Chambord
The most well-known and debatably the most amazing chateau in the Loire River Valley is the Château de Chambord. It displays distinct French renaissance architecture and when construction began 1519, it was built specifically to act as the hunting lodge of Francois I. Francois spared no expense in having this one completed, and some believe that Leonardo Da Vinci was even involved in the design. The primary architect was Domenico da Cortona from Italy, who also helped design the Hotel de Ville in Paris. The northwestern facade of this iconic building is quite imposing and it displays nearly perfect symmetry. This could certainly be most impressive building constructed under the impactful rule of Francois I.
1.Versailles
The most well-known and popular chateau to visit in France is often considered to be the chateau of Versailles, located in the Ile-de-France region, situated 12 miles southwest of Paris. This was also originally built as a royal hunting lodge and it’s a prime example of royalty in France indulging before the French revolution. Construction began with king Louis the XIII it quickly became the new seat of French Royalty and the home of King Louis XIV. The h all of mirrors is renown for it’s elegance and numerous chandeliers. Here we see the opulent queens apartment that you can tell is pretty fancy! The sophisticated gardens of Versailles are unmatched in France and complete with orangeries. It’s been the location of many important treaties that would change history and is estimated to be worth 50 billion dollars, but it’s not for sale!
Hot Air Balloon Ride In Chinon, France
A fun video I made of our first ever hot air balloon flight over the Loire Valley in France. We soared above the town of Chinon. Fabulous experience with Touraine Terre d'Envol.
For a hot air balloon ride in the Loire Valley, I wholeheartedly recommend Touraine Terre d'Envol: loire-et-montgolfiere.com. They involve you in the whole process from prepping the balloon, flying and then packing up the balloon at the end. Then there's a fun food and coffee break at the end. It's a true experience and worth the cost.
Please note I do not own the copyright for the music in the video. The song is Ed Sheeran - I See Fire (Jonas Vincent Remix) via Soundcloud.
