Airavatesvara Temple | Darasuram | Kumbakonam | Thanjavur | Tamil Nadu | History
The Airavatesvara temple is a large Hindu temple in the Kumbakonam area, Thanjavur District. The temple is dedicated to Shiva. It also reverentially displays Vaishnavism and Shaktism traditions of Hinduism, along with the legends associated with Nayanmars – the Bhakti movement saints of Shaivism.
At present, parts of the temple such as the gopuram is in ruins, and the main temple and associated shrines stand alone. It has two sun dials namely morning and evening sun dials which can be seen as wheels of the chariot. The temple continues to attract large gatherings of Hindu pilgrims every year during Magha, while some of the images such as those of Durga and Shiva are part of special pujas.
The temple was built by king Rajaraja Chola II. He ruled the Chola Empire between 1146 and 1172 CE. The established capital for his predecessors was Gangapuri, also referred in some inscriptions as Gangaikonda Cholapuram, named after the holy north Indian Ganges River and goddess. Rajaraja II, however, spent most of his time in the secondary capital city of Ayirattali, also called Palaiyarai and Rajarajapuri. This urban complex included Darasuram, the site of Airavatesvara Temple. He was a patron of Tamil literature and sponsored new Hindu temples in the empire, instead of enhancements and expansions supported by his father and grandfather. The temple at Ayirattali, which came to be known as Airavatesvarar temple in inscriptions is one of his legacy. The Airavatesvara temple was much larger than it is now. It had sapta veedhis (seven streets) and seven courts, similar to the Srirangam temple, according to the inscriptions. All are gone, except the one court with the main temple that survives. There are ruins of gopuram and some structures at some distance from the current visitor premises confirming that the site was badly damaged at some point like the other major Chola era temples and various Chola cities including the capital Gangaikonda Cholapuram.
The reasons for this destruction are unclear. According to Vasanthi, the Pandyas who defeated the Cholas during the later part of 13th century may have raged the city [Gangaikonda Cholapuram] to ground to avenge their previous defeats. However, it is unclear why other temples were destroyed and this temple was spared, as well as why there are around 20 inscriptions from later Cholas, Pandyas and Vijayanagar Empire indicating various gifts and grants to this temple. An alternate theory links the destruction to the raids, plunder and wars, particularly with the invasion of the capital city and the territories that were earlier a part by the Chola Empire along with Madurai by the armies of Delhi Sultanate led by the Muslim commander Malik Kafur in 1311, followed by Khusrau Khan in 1314 and Muhammad bin Tughlaq in 1327. The period that followed saw wars between the Hindu kings and the Muslim Sultans who seceded the Delhi Sultanate and carved out new polity such as the nearby Madurai Sultanate (1335–1378). The Vijayanagara Empire defeated the Madurai Sultanate in 1378 and this temple along with other Chola era temples thereafter came under Hindu kings again who repaired and restored many of them.
Airavatesvara Temple was added to UNESCO's World Heritage Site list of Great Living Chola Temples in the year 2004. The Great Living Chola Temples includes the Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur, the Temple of Gangaikondacholisvaram at Gangaikonda Cholapuram and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram. All of these temples were built by the Cholas between the 10th and 12th centuries CE and have a lot of similarities.

Rayappa Kasi Singing Steps, Airavatesvara Temple, Darasuram, India
The agra mandapa has an attached square porch of 7 metres (23 ft) side. It has ornately carved steps that go from east to west. On its east, outside the main podium, is the bali-pitham. It is unusual, in that it is produced as intricately carved balustraded steps. When one walks or steps on them, they produce a musical note. They are therefore called the singing steps.

The Airavatesvara temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Shiva is here known as Airavatesvara, because he was worshipped at this temple by Airavata, the white elephant of the king of the gods, Indra. Legend has it that Airavata, while suffering from a change of colour curse from Sage Durvasa, had its colours restored by bathing in the sacred waters of this temple. Secret of AUM found in Ancient Indian Temple? Musical Steps of Darasuram
Instagram................
Twitter......................
Facebook..............
Website....................
Hey guys, today we are going to look at a very strange ancient structure built at least 800 years ago. This is the famous Shiva temple in Darasuram, and at the entrance we can see something beyond our understanding. Why is there a metal fence around this structure? What is inside this? If you peep through the holes in the mesh, we see stairs, a set of steps made of stone. Why do these stone steps need to be locked?
It is locked because these are not regular stones, these are musical steps. If you walk on them, these steps will create seven notes of the musical scale in Indian classical music. In the last few years, countries like Chile and Belgium have created stairs which produce musical notes when people walk on them. To us, this seems like the height of modern technology, however we already have such a musical stair created at least 800 years ago. But people here do not respect such a priceless structure, they throw stones on them to see how it sounds, and some have even tried to destroy them. You can see so many stones on these stairs and you can also see it has undergone some serious damage. Remember, I have already shown you the musical pillars of Hampi in another video, so what is so special about this structure and how is it different from Hampi? If you observed these steps carefully, a question should have already popped into your head.
Remember I said, if you walk on them, you will hear 7 different notes. But there is a total of 10 steps. What do these 3 extra steps do? This is the specialty of this temple - the three extra steps produce the sound AUM. If you roll a pebble on the stairs, the sounds Aah.. Ooh and MM will be produced from the extra 3 steps. So, when you hear the sound together, it will sound like AUM. Why this sound AUM? Why do Hindus believe that AUM is a very sacred sound? Why do they keep chanting AUM while meditating?
Because these 3 sounds are the most basic sounds, and these sounds are the ones you can create without using your tongue, and you can create the rest of all other sounds using a combination of these 3 sounds. This may be hard to visualize, so think of how we use 3 colors known as RGB or Red, Green and Blue to create any color we want. This is why these 3 colors are called Primary colors and you can create millions of different color shades by mixing them in various combinations. Similarly the 3 sounds Aah..Ooh and MM are considered the primary sounds which can be mixed up to create any sound we want. It is even said that AUM is the sound of the Universe itself, and recordings in deep space reveal sounds very similar to AUM. Here is a recording of the Solar AUM noise of the sun. We could talk about how each of the 3 major Gods of Hinduism represent one primary sound and also one primary color, but we are not going to.
Because we have something much more exciting, much more fascinating evidence of sound technology in the same temple. This temple has thousands of carvings, and nobody has analyzed this carving until now, but what we have here is the visual representation of the sound AUM. Look at this, these are sound bursts representing AUM. And this is the oldest carving in the world which visually shows sound, today you may see visuals of sound on your computer, but this was created at least 800 years ago. Is this just a theory, am I making this story up? No! According to ancient Tamil texts, Lord Shiva learns the secret of AUM from his son Murugan. And in the same carving, we can see Shiva in a respectful posture, learning the sound AUM from his son who is shown here as a little boy. As the boy chants AUM, you can see how all beings start coming alive, as the cosmic sound vibrates around them.
And this carving proves something very important: Ancient builders were capable of some kind of advanced sound technology, which we do not understand. They were capable of visualizing sound, and all these circular patterns in Hindu temples, are visual representations of various sounds. Even today, we cannot create such musical steps from stones. But ancient builders have created so many strange stone artifacts which create various types of sounds. What kind of technology was used in ancient times?

Hey guys, I am at the Darasuram temple in India which is 850 years old and here we can see the smallest carvings in the world. Let's take a look at this bull carved on one of the pillars. This is about 2 inches wide, but it also shows all the features of a bull. You can see the hump, the horns, ears and eyes, there is even an extended tail, but look carefully, and you can see the Hoofs, and even the nostril, which is just 1 millimeter wide, carved on it. Now, compare this with the carving of the largest bull in the world, this is also situated in India, in a place called Lepakshi, which is about 300 miles away. This bull is nearly 15 feet tall and 27 feet long. The smallest carving of the bull is so small, that you can place 10 of them inside the toenail, or the dewclaw of the largest bull.
But this 2 inch bull is not really the smallest carving in the temple, some of the carvings are even smaller. This carving is less than 2 inches tall and shows Lord Shiva and we can even identify the weapons and objects he is holding in his multiple hands. Here is a lion which is just one and a half inch long, it is a shame that the temple has gone through many centuries of corrosion, many of these carvings have deteriorated. Here is the dancing elephant god, which is even smaller, he is just one inch long. You can see his crown, pot belly and his arms and legs in a dancing posture. Of course, we have to wonder how ancient builders were able to create 1 inch carvings, 850 years ago. Remember I showed you the skulls in Hoysaleswara temple, these are also one inch wide. They are completely hollow and you can pass a twig through one of the ears and can pull it out through the eyes. Were these amazing carvings created using advanced machines or with primitive tools?
But there are carvings even smaller than this at the Darasuram Temple, here is a carving less than 1 inch wide and actually consists of two figures, Lord Shiva and his wife in a sitting posture. This means that each figure is less than half an inch in size. Even today, you can see that people smear saffron powder on this carving as a ritual, this ritual has corroded this carving to a considerable extent, but even after eight centuries, we are able to identify these half inch gods because of their features.
But all this is nothing, because we are only looking at the full carvings, we have to examine the details on the carvings to really appreciate ancient technology. Here is Lord Shiva in the form of a beggar, and look carefully and you will see a begging bowl in his hand. This bowl is carved to the size of black pepper or pepper corn, which is just 4 millimeters wide. Here is the wife of Shiva and you can see the religious dot on her forehead, this less than 2 millimeters. You can even see the smile on her face, Some of the details are so small even to capture with my camera, but if you visit this temple, please do examine these pillars. But be very careful, because - see these designs, which look like Egyptian pyramids, the tips of these pyramids are less than 1 millimeter wide and they will prick you like needles. And this is after eight hundred and fifty years of corrosion, so imagine how sharp they must have been, when they were first created.
But the question is, how can anyone create needle sharp carvings on solid rocks with primitive tools like chisels and hammers? I mean, less than 1 millimeter wide? How did ancient builders accomplish this? Showing emotions if the figures are smiling or frowning on one inch carvings? Half inch deities, recognizable after 850 years of corrosion? A bowl the size of black pepper, just 4 millimeters wide? Sharp points with less than 1 millimeter that can still prick like needles? Were these created with primitive tools or were ancient builders using advanced technology?
