Greenpeace Airship Flies Over Beautiful Juneau, Alaska to Protect the Bering Sea
Greenpeace's 105-foot thermal airship, A.E. Bates, flew over Juneau, Alaska while the North Pacific Fishery Management Council was meeting to decide whether or not to protect the world's largest underwater canyons in the Bering Sea.. The North Pacific Council is the governing body that decides how much fish is caught in Alaskan waters and what protection measures need to be taken.
Over a billion dollars of seafood - mostly pollock, but other species as well - is harvested in the Bering Sea each year. Zhemchug and Pribliof Canyons -- the largest underwater canyons in the world - are carved into the Green Belt zone along the shelf break where they fuel high productivity and provide critical habitat for fish and wildlife. Despite the ecological and economic importance of this stretch of ocean, the increasing threat of climate change, and the uncertainty involved in managing these fisheries, there are no areas protected from fishing along the entire shelf break. That must change. Given how little we understand about deep sea ecosystems or the connections between seafloor habitats and commercially important species, it is extremely risky not to set aside representative portions of the shelf break as a buffer against uncertainty.

A scenic drive from Savikko Park Sandy Beach to Sheep Creek with a quick detour to the waterfront for a view of Downtown Juneau from Douglas Island. The volume is a bit quiet for some reason so you may have to turn it up, but if you don't you're not missing anything but road noise.

Pilot's Choice Glacier Tour - Juneau Alaska - Temsco
We took the Pilot's Choice Tour from Temsco Air with Chip, a veteran helicopter pilot who has been flying the glaciers for 12 years. After seeing the Mendenhall and Eagle glaciers by air, we stopped on the Herbert glacier, right on the medial moraine. There were streams running through rocks and boulders, and we set down right near a pool of glowing blue glacier water. We then flew over the top of the Mendenhall and back down toward the terminus. We set down near a small crevasse that glowed blue from below. A truly memorable experience.

RV'ing Alaska's Inside Passage
The adventure begins on beautiful Vancouver Island in British Columbia with a visit to Telegraph Cove, possibly the best place on Earth to view Orca (killer whales). We continue north to Ketchikan, Alaska's first city on the Inside Passage. Here we explore the spectacular Misty Fjords National Monument by kayak and float plane. We also learn about the art of totem pole carving and watch as they are created. A short side trip by ferry takes us to Prince Of Wales Island, which has more than 2,000 miles of logging roads for exploration. The island is also known for its luxury fishing lodges.
Wrangell calls itself Alaska's Hidden Jewel and is paradise for those seeking outdoor adventure! Many say that if you're looking for the real Alaska, you'll find it here. The Anan Bear Observatory is considered to be one of the best in the state and the only place where black and brown bears feed together. We take an exciting jet boat tour up the Stikine River - the last great un-dammed river on the continent - and visit Telegraph Creek as well as the Grand Canyon of the Stikine.
The ferry becomes part of the adventure as we head north through the Wrangell Narrows - the single most difficult navigational stretch on the Passage. Petersburg is Alaska's Little Norway and Southeast's busiest processing port, home to the area's largest fishing fleet. Sitka was once the Russian capital of Alaska and is one of the most beautiful spots on our route. We explore the town's history and native culture. The Alaska Raptor Center offers a close-up at eagles. A wildlife cruise to St. Lazaria Island lets us observe whales, puffins, sea lions and otters. A snorkeling tour reveals Alaska's underwater world.
Juneau is the state capital. The biggest attraction is Mendenhall Glacier, which we explore with an exciting helicopter tour and glacier trek. Some of the best humpback whale watching is within a short boat ride of town. Incredible glacier calving and towering cliffs can be seen at nearby Tracy Arm. Side trips take us to beautiful Glacier Bay and the quirky little town of Pelican.
Our adventure ends with a tour of historic Skagway and more wilderness adventures in Haines, including a river tour, an air boat ride and panning for gold.

Skagway-Haines-Juneau, AK - Fast Ferry
Today while in Skagway we signed up for a Fast Ferry trip to the capital of Alaska, Juneau! The ferry was a very fast catamaran, and stopped in Haines to pick up a few more passengers.
It took only about 2 hours to get to Juneau, and the weather was perfect and sunny! Along the way, the captain was able to slow down and show us Sea Lions, Seals, Wales, Bald Eagles, Waterfalls and some of the most breathtaking scenery you could ever imagine!
In Juneau, we walked up and down Main Street, had lunch at the Twisted Fish restaurant, and then walked along the waterfront watching boats sailing and pontoon planes taking off!
