The Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, more commonly known as the Airborne Cemetery, is a military cemetery in Oosterbeek, near Arnhem, the Netherlands. It was established in 1945 and is home to 1759 graves from the Second World War. Most of the men buried in the cemetery were Allied servicemen killed in Operation Market Garden, which is officially known as the Battle of Arnhem. The Battle was an Allied attempt to cross the Rhine in 1944, or in the liberation of the city the following year. Men killed in these battles are still discovered in the surrounding area even in the 21st century, and so the number of people interred in the cemetery continues to grow.
This is a simple yet moving film made at the Airborne War cemetery, at Oosterbeek, which is a village on the outskirts of the Dutch City of Arnhem. I visited this site at dusk (late afternoon) on the Saturday between Christmas and New Year 2012. This was a very quiet time to visit, with only 2 other people and a family present at the same time. This allowed for filming in broadly peaceful conditions that captures the atmosphere and feel for the place. The film features a number of natural elements including naked trees and migrating geese as well as some man-made ones including the sounds of passing trains and in the distance fireworks, the sound of which ironically at dusk gave an eerie war-like 'feel' to this very sacred place. I highly recommend a visit here, but do so at a quiet time like I did, so as the expereicne is not tainted by the sheer numbers of other visitors.

ARNHEM, Netherlands, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Family and friends of three
British servicemen killed in World War Two saw them buried with full
military honors in the Netherlands on Friday, more than 50 years after
hearing of their deaths.
Sergeants Lawrence Herbert Howes and David Thompson and Corporal George
Froud were buried at Oosterbeek Military Cemetery near Arnhem, taking
their place alongside hundreds of compatriots slain in what historians
have dubbed one of the war's bravest defeats.
``I'm glad our Dad's being laid to rest,'' said Froud's son Terry Marsh,
who was just three years old when his father embarked for Arnhem in
September 1944 as part of Operation Market Garden.
Several hundred stiff-backed veterans, medals gleaming gold against blue
blazers, stood in silent tribute as the three coffins were lowered into
adjacent graves in the forest cemetery.
The biggest airborne landing ever, involving over 35,000 troops and more
than 6,000 aircraft, Operation Market Garden was planned as the decisive
offensive in ending World War Two.
US, British and Polish troops were dropped at key bridges behind enemy
lines over a three-day period, laying a `carpet'' for a ground advance to
Berlin by Christmas.
The Allies succeeded in seizing their targets in the southern Dutch cities
of Nijmegen and Eindhoven, but in the now-famous words of one of the
British commanders, Arnhem proved ``a bridge too far.''
While more than 10,000 British troops went into the Arnhem area, fewer
than 2,400 escaped death or capture. Today, 139 soldiers are still
officially listed as missing.
``We had a call at the end of every battle,'' remembered Bob Thornley, a
silver-haired veteran who served alongside Froud.
``That's how I found out he (Froud) was missing.''
Thornley, later himself taken prisoner, only discovered his comrade had
been reported killed when the war ended.
The remains of Sergeants Howes and Thompson, both of the Glider Pilot
Regiment, were discovered in Sonnenberg, Oosterbeek in 1994, half a
century after they were reported killed in action on September 21. Their
bodies were identified later.
British military authorities staged a 14-month hunt for Froud's relatives
after his remains were found during building work in fields near
Oosterbeek in 1997.
Public appeals on radio and television went unheard until two days ago,
when a distant acquaintance of Froud's sister saw a BBC newscast and
passed on her address.
Froud's sister, who adopted his son several years after his father's
death, could not attend the ceremony because she was too frail to travel,

Discover Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery in the Netherlands which contains the graves of most of those killed during the Operation Market Garden airborne landings in Arnhem, and many of those killed in later fighting in the area.
There are now 1,684 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated in the cemetery. 243 of the burials are unidentified and two casualties are commemorated by special memorials.

48 A deeply emotional moment at Oosterbeek War cemetery
This is hard to find the right words.
Suddenly you meet what you think is an elderly couple. Taking pictures of each other, posing in front of the gravestone of A. Pope, 34, who died on september 22, 1944.
They were not a couple.
They were the buried soldiers son and daughter.
Coming over from Canada, and back for the first time in 40 years. And as they thought, probably this would be the last time they could visit their fathers grave.
It makes you realise even more, what prize many families paid for our freedom until this day.
It also makes you wonder, how many (still surviving) children lost their father here at Arnhem, and how many still have to struggle with the trauma's of such a big loss at a young age.
I feel, that paying a lot more attention to children of the fallen soldiers here at Oosterbeek cemetary is more then justified.

Battle of Arnhem Background
Following Operation Overlord - the Normandy landings, June 1944 (D-Day), the Allied advance through northern Europe was remarkably swift. On 11 September 1944, the Allies entered the Netherlands close to Eindhoven.
Following this success, Field Marshall Montgomery conceived the plan to push north seizing and holding no less than seven crucial bridges which could mean a push into the German Ruhr. Montgomery believed this would shorten World War Two in Europe by many months, thus Operation Market Garden was born.
The final objective of OP Market Garden was the Rhine Bridge, which crosses the river at Arnhem.
The plan included the largest air drop ever attempted with British, American and Polish forces taking part.
Although Dutch Resistance members (Dutch Underground) reported the presence of heavy German Armour in the area, the plan went ahead.
On 17 September 1944, British Airborne troops were dropped into fields near Renkum - some 10 miles from their objective at Arnhem. The lightly armed troops soon encountered stiff German resistance in the form of elements of two crack German Panzer divisions along with other units who were refitting in area.
Field Marshall Model who was stationed at the Tafelberg Hotel (his HQ), suspected the invasion was to capture him and fled to the east of Arnhem.
The lightly armed Brits were planned to reach and hold Arnhem Bridge for a maximum of two days - armoured reinforcements were planned to arrive via Nijmegen, but after fighting 60 miles along a narrow road the armoured XXX Corps crossed the bridge at Nijmegen - too late to provide critical support to the now diminished Airborne troops, who were making a last stand at the Bridge in Arnhem.
The plucky Brits, who had fought continuously day and night for over 4 days were surrounded, low on food & drink and almost completely out of ammunition.
Other sections of the airborne troops found themselves outnumbered and surrounded in intense battles close to Oosterbeek.
The Arnhem / Oosterbeek War Cemetery, contains the soldiers and airmen killed during what has become known as: The Battle of Arnhem.There are now 1,691 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated in the cemetery. 245 of the burials are unidentified. There are also 79 Polish, three Dutch and four non-war graves in the cemetery.
