Airborne Northern Territory pub crawl
Schooners punctuated with stories of crocodiles and helicopter flights - a pub crawl by air is a unique way to experience Australia's top end.
A pub crawl where the designated driver is a chopper pilot? Ben Mckelvey will drink to that.
Taking off in a chopper is like changing the scale of a Google map, with each few metres of elevation representing a click on the minus sign. A few moments after taking off from a grimy industrial park south-east of Darwin, a cityscape is revealed on our left, an ocean on our right, and the endless browns and greens of the Northern Territory in front of us.
Ahead of us is possibly the world's greatest pub crawl, largely the exclusive reserve of cashed up miners and Darwin deep pocketers; nine watering holes - from the rustic to the refined - scattered across Australia's Top End in one day, with transport provided by two $500,000 Robinson R44 helicopters. If there's a better one, I've never heard of it.

Helicopter Pub Crawl
As crazy as it sounds. Using a helicopter to fly around to five remote pubs around the top end (Darwin) of the northern territory in Australia.
Thanks to for an awesome pub crawl.
Me ( and Cameron Ernst ( went on a helicopter pub crawl starting in Darwin to five remote pubs.
Some of the highlights included Crab claw Island resort. Probably the best pub on the tour. It's like a hidden paradise. Goat Island owned by a very interesting guy called Kai. Nearest neighbour is about 12 km away and you have to use a boat or helicopter to get to the island. So you can have a party and make as much noise and nobody will care. Litchfield hotel, you land in the beed garden, friendly buffalo to pet/feed and the pub does some pretty good food.
Looking back on it. It was a fantastic time, somewhat surreal to be flying to pubs.
Helicopter Pub Crawl, Darwin NT
When the nearest pub is miles away through croc-infested waters, why not take a helicopter instead to explore the Northern Territory's favourite drinking holes?

Timor Battle
While Australians will commemorate the bombing of Darwin this weekend many will be unaware that the attack was part of a Japanese move to take the island of Timor. Historical records show the Japanese targetted the port, planes and ships in Darwin Harbour ... to stop the allied forces responding to their invasion of Timor.
Fishing in Australia's Northern Territory
On July 31, 2013, Chris Woodward, Editor of Sport Fishing Magazine, and John Frazier, Editor of Fly Fishing in Salt Waters, joined us for a Hangout about fishing in Australia's Northern Territory.
They talked about the planning they did for their trip, the equipment they brought, their travel, their first impressions of the Top End and Darwin... and then all about their four days fishing, which included tackling boating into river outlets and mangrove-lined beaches, heli-fishing (dropping into remote locations via helicopter) and a couple of days on the Bamurru flood plains.
It wasn't easy fishing, but each got a 'trophy' catch worth hearing about, including the smallest barramundi one of their guides will never forget!
Thanks to Chris Woodward ( and John Frazier ( as well as our partners on the ground in the Northern Territory, including Airborne Solutions ( and Bamurru Plains lodge (
