Communication failure - 'lives at risk' due to computer failures
BBC news report - Firefighters are being delayed in getting to emergencies because of a computerised dispatching system which regularly crashes and often fails to send the closest fire engine. The system, which is called VISION DS and supplied by the technology company Capita, is used by the UK's busiest fire brigade - London Fire Service, as well as brigades in the South West - Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue, Devon and Somerset and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service. Responding to a Freedom of Information request, London Fire Service has said that the system crashed 7 times in 2016 and they logged 195 separate problems. In the South West the system crashed 10 times in 2016 and - in some cases - it was down for several hours. One control room operator has told the programme that when the system has gone down, staff have resorted to using AtoZ maps to identify the nearest fire station to an incident. The system failures are putting lives at risk according to the Fire Brigades Union.

BA admit 'error' over cancelled flights
British Airways strikes: Cancelled flights back on after 'email error' British Airways has admitted it made a mistake when it advised passengers flights were cancelled, and told them to book new ones. Passengers have described confusion as cancelled flights were reinstated, but only after some of them rebooked. Pilots are set to strike next month, but some people with flights on non-strike days were told to rebook, or get a refund. BA apologised for any concern caused and said the email was an error. We are getting in touch with all those customers this afternoon to clarify that their flight will go ahead as planned, a spokesman said. We are sorry for any confusion and inconvenience this has caused. He encouraged anyone who had spent money on new flights to get in touch. We will deal with each case on an individual basis, he added. The airline announced that pilots would strike on 9, 10 and 27 September. But on Saturday it told some passengers with flights between the 8th and 12th that their flights had been cancelled, and they should rebook or seek a refund.'Complete mess' Josh Sullivan, 27, from Trowbridge, had been due to fly with BA back to London on 8 September from his stag do in Prague. He said his best man, who organised the flights, bought another pair of flights from RyanAir for £180 when he was emailed to say the flight had been cancelled. BA has now informed him the flight has not been cancelled. The fact that they've un-cancelled it, we went through all this aggro today for no reason - and now I have two flights back from Prague and we're £180 out of pocket, Mr Sullivan said. It's a complete mess, he added. BA explained there could still be some disruption to flights on 8, 11, and 12 September. Airlines have a very complex operation and during times of widespread disruption, there can be knock-on effect onto flights on other days, BA said. It added: We are doing absolutely everything we can to prevent this unfair action from taking place and ruining our customers' travel plans. BA says it carries 145,000 customers every day - with a fleet of more than 280 aircraft - and a BA plane takes off from somewhere in the world every 90 seconds. Passengers described utter confusion on social media on Saturday. Some said they had made alternative travel arrangements after being unable to get through to BA's customer services. Josie Simpson told the BBC she called the airline 67 times to try to rebook a family holiday to Florida. We don't know whether we've lost the entire holiday, she said. It took us months to book, 18 months to save to pay for it... and it could all just be gone. The airline is not expected to release details on how many people had been affected by the erroneous email. Roswell Incident: Department of Defense Interviews - Jesse Marcel / Vern Maltais
Mac Brazel, who discovered the debris which sparked the Roswell UFO incident, died in 1963, well before researchers started to interview witnesses to the incident. More on Roswell:
However, he was interviewed in 1947 and his accounts of debris appeared in the Roswell Daily Record on July 9, 1947. In the interview he said he found bright wreckage made up of rubber strips, tinfoil, a rather tough paper and sticks.
Jesse Marcel was approached by researchers in 1978 and he recounted details suggesting the debris Brazel had led him to was exotic. He believed the true nature of the debris was being suppressed by the military. His accounts were featured in the 1979 documentary UFOs are Real, and in a February 1980 National Enquirer article, which are largely responsible for making the Roswell incident famous by sparking renewed interest.
There was all kinds of stuff—small beams about three eighths or a half inch square with some sort of hieroglyphics on them that nobody could decipher. These looked something like balsa wood, and were about the same weight, except that they were not wood at all. They were very hard, although flexible, and would not burn....One thing that impressed me about the debris was the fact that a lot of it looked like parchment. It had little numbers with symbols that we had to call hieroglyphics because I could not understand them. They could not be read, they were just like symbols, something that meant something, and they were not all the same, but the same general pattern, I would say. They were pink and purple. They looked like they were painted on. These little numbers could not be broken, could not be burned. I even took my cigarette lighter and tried to burn the material we found that resembled parchment and balsa, but it would not burn—wouldn't even smoke. But something that is even more astonishing is that the pieces of metal that we brought back were so thin, just like tinfoil in a pack of cigarettes. I didn't pay too much attention to that at first, until one of the boys came to me and said: You know that metal that was in there? I tried to bend the stuff and it won't bend. I even tried it with a sledgehammer. You can't make a dent on it, Marcel said.
Second-hand accounts from Alice Knight and Vern Maltais show descriptions which suggest dummies again, and an uncertainty about the date of occurrence. I don't recall the date, said Knight. Their heads were hairless, said Maltais, and their clothing was one-piece and gray in color.[19] (p. 58-9)
A first-hand account from Gerald Anderson similarly offered descriptions that seemingly matched dummies: thought they were plastic dolls, he said. He also described a blimp, further suggesting a misidentified military recovery operation.[19] (p. 61) A description of a jeep-like truck that had a bunch of radios in it sounds very much like a modified Dodge M-37 utility truck not used until 1953, further suggesting a confusion about dates.
The Air Force report concluded: The descriptions examined here, provided by UFO theorists themselves, were so remarkably -- and redundantly -- similar to these Air Force projects that the only reasonable conclusion can be that the witnesses described these activities.[19] (p. 68)
Spies Like Us
Stellar comedians Dan Aykroyd (Sneakers, My Girl) and Chevy Chase (Funny Farm, National Lampoon Vacation series) team up in one of 1985's top-grossing films (over $60,000,000). Aykroyd and Chase meet at the CIA entrance exam. When they're caught cheating, it seems inevitable that they are perfect for a special government mission! A zany homage to the ol' Bing Crosby-Bob Hope road movies, with romantic foil Donna Dixon (Bosom Buddies), written by the team that brought you City Slickers and Splash, and directed by hit-maker John Landis (Animal House, Trading Places). A host of star cameos join in for an impossibly fun mission! MPAA Rating: PG (c) 1985 Warner Bros. All Rights Reserved.

From The Horse's Mouth - The case against the Westbury Bypas
In the summer of 2007 the Government agreed with the demand made at the end of this film - that Wiltshire County Council should not be allowed to give itself planning permission for this unpopular and destructive road. The Secretary of State 'called in' the planning application and ordered a public inquiry to be held.
In August 2007 local, regional and national organisations came together to form the White Horse Alliance (Member groups are listed on corridor-alliance.co.uk). The Alliance is raising the funds for legal representation and expert witnesses to present a professional case against the road at the public inquiry. The more money we can raise the better the case we can present.
The public inquiry will begin on 17 June 2008. It is expected to last six weeks.
Thank-you: John Mortimor Productions, for producing this film; ARKive Wildscreen Trust, for still images in the film (photographers: Lesser Horseshoe Bat , Alan Barnes; Dormouse, Werner Curth).
Correction: The film says there are nine bat gantries. This was a mistake. The design of the proposed eastern bypass and Glenmore Link includes at least nine bat crossings of various kinds - including tunnels - but only seven of them are gantries.
