Transportation in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina 2019
Trams, buses, trains, and trolleybuses rule this capital of the small country of Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Sarajevo's electric tramways, in operation since 1885, are the oldest form of public transportation in the city. Sarajevo had the first full-time (dawn to dusk) tram line in Europe, and the second in the world. Opened on New Year's Day in 1885, it was the testing line for the tram in Vienna and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and operated by horses. Originally built to 760 mm (2 ft 5 15⁄16 in) Bosnian gauge, the present system in 1960 was upgraded to 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) standard gauge. The trams played a pivotal role in the growth of the city in the 20th century.
There are seven tramway lines supplemented by five trolleybus lines and numerous bus routes. The main railroad station in Sarajevo is in the north-central area of the city. From there, the tracks head west before branching off in different directions, including to industrial zones in the city. Sarajevo is undergoing a major infrastructure renewal; many highways and streets are being repaved, the tram system is undergoing modernization, and new bridges and roads are under construction. ~Wikipedia

BOSNIA: SARAJEVO AIRPORT REOPENS
Natural Sound
Transport planes carrying vital aid to the besieged citizens of Sarajevo have been landing after the airport was reopened Tuesday.
The runway had been blocked since New Year's Day after an Ilyushin transport plane skidded off the end of the runway.
The first transport planes started landing in the early morning, taking advantage of the good flying conditions.
Most of the planes were UNHCR flights bringing in vital food supplies. Eighty percent of Sarajevo's food is supplied through the airlift and the closing of the airport always raises fears of shortages, especially during winter.
The most recent closure was not caused by Bosnian Serb shelling as is usually the case, but by a Belarussian Ilyushin transport plane that skidded off the tarmac on New Year's Day, blocking the runway.
It took the U-N two days of intense work with heavy machinery to move the plane which had got stuck in thick mud. As the planes landed, the wreck of the Russian-built transport plane could clearly be seen.
Meanwhile the current ceasefire has brought some normality to the people of Sarajevo.
The trams were running in the centre of town again after tram traffic was stopped in the middle of November. They were packed with people either visiting friends and family or trying to get to the city's few markets.
Fuel shortages make this the only mode of public transport, making them popular targets for Bosnian Serb snipers in the hills. The U-N armoured vehicles are stationed along the route of the tram but they can only give a small measure of protection.
Nobody here knows how long the current ceasefire will hold. The people have lost count of the number of ceasefires which ended in bitter and bloody battles.

Took the new Wizzair route from Budapest to Sarajevo on May1st, 2017. After the 1 hour flight I waited for the airport bus into town, to Baščaršija which is the old town and all the old market streets. My Pension was right next to the river and I managed to get my own room for 10 Euros which was excellent.

BOSNIA: SARAJEVO AIRPORT: UN PLANE ATTACKED
Natural Sound
Sarajevo's lifeline - its airport - is under threat after a United Nations plane was fired on when taking off from the runway.
The UN is also investigating a mortar attack in Sarajevo that killed two people and injured three others.
Heavy machine-gun fire greets this French transport plane at Sarajevo's airport - it is here to pick up two French soldiers, injured in recent incidents in the city.
It is part of a continuing cycle: Yesterday a UN plane was fired upon as it left the same airport - making this flight possibly the last.
The United Nations is seeking guarantees from the warring factions that planes will not be attacked.
In the centre of town, the UN has begun an investigation into a mortar attack in Sarajevo early this morning (Tuesday).
Explosions and exchanges of fire rocked besieged Sarajevo early Tuesday following shelling of the city centre that killed two people and wounded at least three other civilians.
The 120 mm mortar landed in the city's historic centre yesterday evening in violation of the agreement to demilitarize an area around Sarajevo.
U.N. officials have also reported shelling in the town of Bihac and the Tuzla airport - other U.N.- declared safe areas.
The two mortars landed Monday evening in the centre of Sarajevo.
One man was killed on the spot, the other died in hospital.
Three other civilians, including this woman, were wounded.
After the attack, the French commander of the UN force in Sarajevo visited the shelling site.
General Herve Gobilliard says the shells were 120 millimetre.
This type of shell has been banned from what is supposed to be a heavy weapons exclusion zone around the city.

Bosnia - Sarajevo Airport Route Reopens
T/I: 10:33:03
The siege of Sarajevo eased slightly on Monday (6/2) with the
limited reopening of the supply route crossing the airport.
Civilians are allowed to use the road to make contact with the
outside world. Civilian motorists set off across the route, which
is in range of Serb guns and runs south to link the suburb of
Dobrinja with Butmir and the rest of government-controlled Bosnia.

Trams in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina 2019
The Sarajevo tram network is one of Europe's oldest, having originally served as the test line for Vienna's trams. As of 2010, the Sarajevo tram system consists of seven lines, primarily running along a single track route. The system is 22.9 kilometres (14.2 mi) long; this includes a 0.4 kilometres (0.25 mi)-long branch to the city's main railway station (Željeznička Stanica). It primarily serves as an east-west link from the city centre (Baščaršija) to the western suburb of Ilidža. ~Wikipedia
