Aishmuqam Shrine Anantnag Kashmir
Aishmuqam shrine Islamabad Kashmir
Aishmuqam is the shrine of a Sufi saint Baba Zaina-ud-din Wali, who was commonly known by the name ‘Zaino Shah Sahib’. This shrine is located on a hillock, which stands 86 km away from Srinagar en route to Pahalgam. The main sanctorum is placed inside a deep and narrow cave,
which also contains several relics associated to Baba in a room. One such relic is ‘The Rod of Staff’ of Prophet Moses PBUH.
The shrine hosts a one-week long Zool festival every year in the month of April, in respect to Shiekh Zaina-ud-din Wali. The procession involves holding torchlights ‘leshi’ in a peculiar way, which depicts public seeking blessings of the saint.

Aishmuqam shrine.History of aishmuqam shrine
Aishmuqam Shrine is one of the most prominent tourist spots in Anantnag, which was built in the 15th century A.D. This shrine was constructed in the honour of Shiekh Zain-ud-din, who was one of the chief disciples of the renowned Reshi, Shiekh Noor-ud-din. The hills in the Aishmuqam town were once home to Hazrat Zain-ud-din Wali. Therefore, this place is considered to be sacred by people belonging to different religions.
According to the popular belief, Hazrat Zain-ud-din Wali had spent his time preaching about Allah. For this purpose, Hazrat Zain-ud-din Wali decided to restrict himself to the cave. Aishmuqam shrine is thronged by thousands of devotees during the annual Urs and Zool festival.

People in Kashmir celebrated the torchFestival and burned Mashals (also known as Zool in local language) at Shrine of Sufi saint Baba Zaina-ud-din Wali in Aishmuqam area South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on 19,April,2019. Performing the traditional ‘dambaali’, some revellers ripped apart their shirts in excitement as they chanted “Zain Shah chui Baadshah (Zain Shah is king)”.A festive atmosphere was witnessed along the serpentine stairway leading to the shrine and on the hillock as dozens of devotees carrying ‘mashaals’ (fire torches) lined up the zigzag hilly track leading to the shrine. Legend has it that during the rule of Ashushah Badshah a few centuries back, a ‘genie’ (ghost) had terrified Aishmuqam as it would devour villagers one by one. However, a Gujjar boy named Bumisad later killed the ghost after a fight that lasted a week. The villagers still celebrate the victory of good over evil centuries later.
Abdul Ganai Wani ,a local resident who had been coming to the shrine for the past many years, said the shrine had been witnessing the same celebrations on ‘urs’ for the past many centuries. “Going by their enthusiasm, it seems as if the ghost was killed today,” he said.Locals said when Hazrat Zain-u-Din Wali came to Aishmuqam in the 15th century, he kept the tradition of lighting torches alive. The saint meditated in a small cave, where his mausoleum was now located. Many cultural activities take place here. The festival is held after the evening prayers, and a torchlight procession is the main highlight of festival. The procession involves holding torch lights, locally called leshi in a peculiar way, which depicts the public seeking blessings of the saint

This Bollywood superhit film did lot on its part to make people aware of this place. A very beautiful song sung by Adnan Sami was filmed here. The song was inspired from a very old traditional qawwali and it is said that it was for the first time that a film was granted the permission to shoot inside the premises of the shrine.

The Urs at Ashmuqam in Kashmir
Located 70 km south of Srinagar, the 15th Century shrine of Zain-ud-din in Ashmuqam village bears testimony to Sufi culture of Kashmir. Perched atop a hill with a mausoleum deep inside a cave carved inside the mountain, the place is lit up every year on the Urs (death anniversary) of the Sufi saint, bringing to the fore a rare spectacle of torchlight and reverberating the place with chants.
