Private investors keeping the arts alive in Beirut
(23 Oct 2015) LEAD IN:
With little left in the kitty for cultural enterprise, the Lebanese government struggles to provide adequate funding for the arts.
Enter a new wave of art patron, whose mission it is to support cultural projects through private initiatives.
STORY-LINE:
Artist Vartan Avakian and his team prepare the gallery space that will house one of Beirut's newest art exhibitions.
It will be one of several new shows opening up in the Lebanese capital this month, most of them backed by private investment.
Contemporary art galleries Marfa and the Aishi Foundation are launching this week.
Art lovers are stepping in to fill the gap left by the state, which has little or no funds to champion local artists.
It's a natural evolution says Avakian, whose exhibition 'Collapsing Clouds of Gas and Dust' will be the inaugural exhibition at Marfa.
His work features photographs and stones made of silver dust particles collected from old films.
Marfa was founded by art collector and Beirut Art Centre member Joumana Asseily.
There's no other investment, There's no help from the government so it's all private initiatives, private decisions, she says.
The launch of Marfa follows hot on the heels of the opening of the Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock Museum earlier this month, which showcases contemporary Lebanese art.
The most hotly-anticipated opening of the month, however, is that of the Aishti Foundation.
Aishti owner Tony Salame, has invested 100 million US dollars to build a large contemporary art museum in Jal El Dib, a seaside town on the outskirts of Beirut.
Workers there are racing to finalise preparations ahead of this weekend's the opening.
The non-profit organisation the Association for the Promotion and Exhibition of the Arts in Lebanon (APEAL) is also raising funds towards building a museum for local artists, as is the Saradar Foundation.
Art collectors Johnny and Nadine Mokbel welcome the new art venues.
Johnny Mokbel, who only collects Lebanese art, says it is all part of a coming of age of the Lebanese art scene.
It enhances the art scene, it makes prices go up, it also benefits the artist, it benefits every single, let's say, one working on the art scene. From the artist, through the gallerist until the art collector, so it's good for everyone, he says.
Mokbel remains dedicated to Lebanese art.
To look outside I go to travel and see exhibitions, I go to visit galleries, but if I want to buy I will invest every single penny for art in the Lebanese art scene, he says.
It is a scene that looks set to flourish - as new institutions open and more art goes on show.
