Aizu Wakamatsu | We Are Seniors | SWOW Trip
The second half of our trip involved visiting and studying Aizu Wakamatsu, an ancient Japanese samurai village that was reconstructed after the Boshin War. Need I say, we had fun.

Chapter 3: Aizu, the Samurai City
The old city of Aizu was filled with history. For a day, you can buy a bus pass for 600 yen and go all-around the city's landmarks and historical sites. The places I went to were Iimoriyama hills, Bukeyashiki, an old samurai residence turned into a museum, Oyakuen gardens and finally Tsuruga castle. I don't know what it is with me and samurai cities, but it always rains when I visit one and today was no exception! A little bit of rain didn't stop me though!
Iimoriyama hills has a lot of history behind it. It explains the aftermath of the Aizu civil war that occured when the government took over the political rights in the city. Many samurai from Aizu were displeased by this takeover and decided to rebel against the government. They lost and the remains of many of the Byakkotai group that commited seppuku (suicide) because of the result of the battle are buried here. Sazaedo temple is also an important landmark in the area. It has an iconic form: the stairs are built going all around the temple.
Bukeyashiki is an old samurai residence of ancient lords. It is now turned into a museum where you can learn much history about how the samurai lived in the old days. There is even an old rice refining factory that still runs today! It shows the old techniques of refining rice. Overall, it was a very enriching visit!
Next was Oyakuen. It is a traditional Japanese garden. They grow herbs on-place and make medicinal tea with them. There is a beautiful pond right in the middle, where fish and duck can swim freely. With the rainy mood it was quite a beautiful sight to see.
Our final destination was Tsuruga castle. It reminded me a lot of Kanazawa's. Its white colors made the castle almost glow! It is said to be the only castle in Japan with a red roof. The castle was brought down once because of war and was and completely rebuilt as a museum later, explaining the history behind the fundation of the castle and the many dynasties that lived within it. You can also learn more about the Aizu civil war and the history behind the young Byakkotai soldiers.

JAPAN BY TRAIN: Osaka - Gokurakubashi - Koyasan [HD] (05/Jan/2014)
Video footage recorded during my trip all over Japan between December 27th 2013 and January 10th 2014.
This clip includes images of the trip between the Shin·Imamiya (in Osaka) and Koyasan sations, in the non-JR Nankai railway.
The beaufitul and peaceful town of Koyasan was settled in year 819 by monk Kukai as a place for spiritual retirement, and which amazed me not only for the beauty its temples, pagodas and streets but also for its large mausoleum all along the forest, which is worth a walk to enjoy it (little of all this appears on the video, as I took pictures instead).
Getting there from Osaka requires transferring to the cable car at the Gokurakubashi station, and to the local bus service at the Koyasan station, located some minutes away from the actual town.
The first shots of the video were taken at the park that surrounds the beautiful castle of Osaka, near the Osakajokoen station (whose name means Park of the Osaka Castle).
(Please note that these videos do not intend to show the tourist attractions at the cities I stop at, but the journey itself, particularly the train routes. For castles, monuments or colourful streets I usually preferred taking photographs... Sorry for that!)
The last samurai of Aizuwakamatsu / 会津若松市
Aizuwakamatsu in Fukushima prefecture has a mystical quality I can't quite describe. The last stand for the samurai before the Meiji Era, this city houses multiple cultural sites: the gravesite of the Byakko-tai, a bukeyashiki samurai manor, and the reproduction of Tsuruga Castle.

【Whole Film Ver.】AGANO No.1 Rapid Service 1/6 Aizu Wakamatsu → Kitakata
Agano Rapid Service is operated between Aizu-Wakamatsu, Fukushima, and Niigata via the Ban-'etsu West line by East Japan Railway (JR East). It roughly runs along the national route 49 and the Agano river with beautiful water view and mountain sceneries of typical inland landscape in these area.
This video was filmed in June of 2003 by Agano No.1 Rapid Service, from Aizu-Wakamatsu to Niigata positioned at beside the driving cab.
This video clip shows the first section; Aizu-Wakamatu → Kitakata, out of 6 clips.
We are sorry the original video was a bit old with some noise and not so clear vision, but we hope you enjoy beautiful front view running among evergreen June landscapes on the Ban-'etsu West line's journey.
Sazaedo / FUKUSHIMA
Down the northern side of hill Iimoriyama, located in Aizu-Wakamatsu, you can find the Sazaedo pagoda, an important cultural property of Japan. Completed in 1796, this architectural masterpiece is famous for its double helix staircase ー people who go up and down the pagoda at the same time will never cross paths. Further up the hill are the 19 tombs of the Byakkotai soldiers, an army of teenagers who commited mass suicide out of honour to their lord in 1868, after the Tsuruga Castle (Wakamatsu Castle) was attacked.

This clip includes images of the Tokyo - Fukushima - Kaminoyama Onsen - Yamagata - Tendo - Uzen Chitose - Sendai journey, with train changes at some stations. It's winter and the Tohoku region shows lots of snow everywhere. Moreover, it's a bank holiday today and everything seems peaceful... just as the lovely Akita Inu dog on the video!
By the way, note the lovely, clear views of the mount Fuji at the begining of the clip (while leaving Tokyo)!
