Chapter 3: Aizu, the Samurai City
The old city of Aizu was filled with history. For a day, you can buy a bus pass for 600 yen and go all-around the city's landmarks and historical sites. The places I went to were Iimoriyama hills, Bukeyashiki, an old samurai residence turned into a museum, Oyakuen gardens and finally Tsuruga castle. I don't know what it is with me and samurai cities, but it always rains when I visit one and today was no exception! A little bit of rain didn't stop me though!
Iimoriyama hills has a lot of history behind it. It explains the aftermath of the Aizu civil war that occured when the government took over the political rights in the city. Many samurai from Aizu were displeased by this takeover and decided to rebel against the government. They lost and the remains of many of the Byakkotai group that commited seppuku (suicide) because of the result of the battle are buried here. Sazaedo temple is also an important landmark in the area. It has an iconic form: the stairs are built going all around the temple.
Bukeyashiki is an old samurai residence of ancient lords. It is now turned into a museum where you can learn much history about how the samurai lived in the old days. There is even an old rice refining factory that still runs today! It shows the old techniques of refining rice. Overall, it was a very enriching visit!
Next was Oyakuen. It is a traditional Japanese garden. They grow herbs on-place and make medicinal tea with them. There is a beautiful pond right in the middle, where fish and duck can swim freely. With the rainy mood it was quite a beautiful sight to see.
Our final destination was Tsuruga castle. It reminded me a lot of Kanazawa's. Its white colors made the castle almost glow! It is said to be the only castle in Japan with a red roof. The castle was brought down once because of war and was and completely rebuilt as a museum later, explaining the history behind the fundation of the castle and the many dynasties that lived within it. You can also learn more about the Aizu civil war and the history behind the young Byakkotai soldiers.
That's it for today, thank you for your hospitality Aizu. Let's continue our journey toward the north!

City of the Samurai, Aizuwakamatsu: Video Update #10
In this video we share our stay at Toyama and Aizuwakamatsu.
We visit a number of hot spots during our short stay: including the Aizuwakamatsu castle, a samurai residence, Mt. Iimori and the Oyakuen Garden. Our hosts recommend a delicious and very inexpensive dish of Tanmen ramen. We also try some local sushi at a revolving sushi restaurant where a mini-shinkansen brings your order. Finally we find some time practice calligraphy and write our names in Japanese characters. Aizu is a beautiful city with an incredible history and amazing people.

The last samurai of Aizuwakamatsu / 会津若松市
Aizuwakamatsu in Fukushima prefecture has a mystical quality I can't quite describe. The last stand for the samurai before the Meiji Era, this city houses multiple cultural sites: the gravesite of the Byakko-tai, a bukeyashiki samurai manor, and the reproduction of Tsuruga Castle.

I visited the city of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, in November 2012. Kenrokuen visited together at that time is a mark this Nagamachi samurai residences. (Kokudaka real stone is estimated at 1.2 million) was the castle town of one million stone Maeda family of Kaga, Ishikawa Prefecture, in Edo period and may not say. Because Tai Hang, but had saddled the many servants, one of the areas where they lived samurai is this Nagamachi. Is full of air, I was able to catch a glimpse of the good old Japanese landscape.
The real Samurai is still alive in Aizu of Japan present day.
Maybe you don't know that the real Samurai is still alive in Aizu of Japan present day. I want all people to know Aizu Bushido.

The Former Samurai Residence (Bukeyashiki)
⚔️The FORMER SAMURAI RESIDENCE (Bukeyashiki) has just reopened on August 2018 after two years of renovations! Included with the renovations a new route that takes visitors into the house was added. ⚔️
????This former samurai residence was typical for middle-class samurais of the Matsue clan during the Edo period. With a public image to upkeep, the house was distinctly split into two parts with the front of the house built for receiving guests and the back for a private living. Step into the house and have a glimpse of the samurai’s way of living.????

Japan Vlog: Samurai School in Aizu, Fukushima. For Prajwal.
It has been a long time since we have posted a video, and Prajwal was the one who remind us. So I made this small video of my trip to Aizu, Fukushima, which is famous for Tsuruga Castle. This is a samurai school that I visited with my host family. The boy is Hikaru and the girl is Mahiro. :D

Japan Trip 2016 Fukushima /息子初めての日本 美しき福島
This video features Aizuwakamatsu and Ouchijuku in Fukushima.
Aizuwakamatsu is a castle town with a long samurai tradition. Highlights include Tsuruga castle and the old samurai residence, as well Mt Iimori, which is the famous burial place of the Byakkotai, a group of young samurai warriors, who committed suicide when they mistakenly believed that the castle had fallen. Sazaedo is also located there, which is an extremely rare temple completed in 1796 that features a double helix staircase on which the people going up and those going down never pass each other.
Ouchijuku is an old post town that has been restored to look as it did in the Edo Period. Even the phone and electrical wires have been buried underground to retain its authenticity.
