Akal Wood Fossil Park is a National Geological Monument of India located in Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan.
It is 21 hectares in extent and is located in Akal village, 17-18 km from Jaisalmer city, and 1 km off the Jaisalmer-Barmer road, on a strech of about 10 sq. km of bare hillside. The terrain is barren and rocky.
The park lies in Jaisalmer's fossil belt, a region noted to have potential for geological parks. Fossils of ancient flying dinosaur species have been found in the nearby Thaiyat area.
The park contains fossils of petrophyllum, ptyllophyllum, equisetitis species and dicotyledonous wood and gastropod shells of the Early Jurassic period. There are about a dozen fossilised wood logs lying horizontally oriented in random directions, the largest of which is 13.4 m in length and 0.9 m in width.[6] There are a total of 25 petrified tree trunks. The fossils date back 180 million years.
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) declared the site a National Geological Monument in 1972. The park was maintained by GSI till 1985, when maintenance was handed over to the Forest Department of Government of Rajasthan. Now, the park is maintained by the authorities of the Desert National Park. The exposed tree trunks have been protected by iron grill cages with tin sheet roofing.
अकाल लकड़ी जीवाश्म पार्क एक 180 साल पुराना पार्क, जैसलमेर शहर से 17 किमी की दूरी पर स्थित है। यह पार्क 21 हेक्टेयर के क्षेत्र में फैला हुआ है। पर्यटक यहाँ पर पेड़ के तनों के विशाल जीवाश्म और प्राचीन समुद्री शंख देख सकते हैं। पुरातात्विक विभाग के प्रशासन में भविष्य की खुदाई में और अधिक जीवाश्मों के मिलने की उम्मीद है।

Salkhan Fossils Park Geologists have been aware of the fossils found in the present-day park area since the 1930s. People who have carried out research in the area include Mr. Auden (1933), Mr. Mathur (1958 and 1965), and Professor S. Kumar (1980–81). On 23 August 2001, the area was featured in an article written by journalist Vijay Shankar Chaturvedi for the Hindi newspaper Hindustan. Subsequently, it was formally inaugurated as a fossil park by District Magistrate Bhagawan Shankar on 8 August 2002.
An international workshop was organised in December 2002, attracting participation from 42 delegates from India and abroad. Canadian geologist H.J. Hoffman was impressed by the fossils, and remarked that he had not seen such beautiful and clear fossils anywhere else in the world. In 2004, researcher Mukund Sharma further explored the area.
In 2013, the state government sanctioned ₹12.5 million for the development of the Salkhan Fossils Park.
