The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is with a length of almost four kilometers the world's longest suspension bridge. It spans the Akashi Strait (Akashi Kaikyo) between Kobe and Awaji Island and is part of the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway, one of three expressways which connect Honshu with Shikoku. The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge was opened in 1998.
Bridge enthusiasts should also consider participating in the Bridge World guided tour, which includes a visit to the very top of one of the bridge's 300 meter tall towers. The tour is in Japanese only, held twice a day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, takes 2.5 hours, involves a lot of walking, costs 3000 yen per person and requires advance reservations (see links below).

The Magnificent Akashi Kaikyo (明石海峡) Bridge, kobe city, Japan
Akashi Kaikyo (明石海峡) Bridge is the largest suspension bridge in the world and it is located in Japan.
The total span of the Bridge is 3911 meters and the bridge is completed in early 1998. The bridge is used to connect the Main Island of Japan (from Kobe city side) to the Awaji Islands over the Akashi Strait. Since Akashi Strait is an international waterway, the bridge has to be really high. In addition, any construction of this size in Japan has to withstand massive earthquakes. All these variables combined make this bridge an engineering marvel and an architectural masterpiece.
I do not want to bore you with other statistics related to the bridge (wikipedia has a bunch of them), please enjoy the video of the bridge.
If you are traveling around Kansai region such as Osaka or Kyoto, please make a trip to Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, you will not regret it.

The longest bridge in the world Akashi Kaikyo Bridge
The Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, also nicknamed Pearl Bridge, is the longest suspension bridge in the world with a length of 3911meters and a main span of 1991meters, connecting Maiko-cho in Tarumi Ward, Hyogo prefecture and Iwaya in Awaji City. Its main tower is 298.3meters above sea-level. It is the fourth tallest structure in Japan after Tokyo Ski Tree, Tokyo Tower and Abenobashi Terminal Building Tower, though it is still taller than the Yokohama Landmark Tower.
When I drove across the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge on my family trip to Awajishima Island, I was very much impressed by its length. I was also overwhelmed by the scenery I enjoyed outside the car window, and I first realized its immense size because it took us such a long time to cross it in our car. I also enjoyed the view of the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge from MARINE PIA KOBE, which I visited recently. The longest bridge in the world looked really impressive from out there.
Kobe, Japan - Akashi Kaikyō Bridge (2019)
The Akashi Kaikyō Bridge (明石海峡大橋 Akashi Kaikyō Ōhashi) is a suspension bridge, which links the city of Kobe on the Japanese mainland of Honshu to Iwaya on Awaji Island. It crosses the busy Akashi Strait (Akashi Kaikyō in Japanese) as part of the Honshu–Shikoku Highway. It was completed in 1998, and has the longest central span of any suspension bridge in the world, at 1,991 metres (6,532 ft; 1.237 mi). It is one of the key links of the Honshū–Shikoku Bridge Project, which created three routes across the Inland Sea.
Kobe (神戸市 Kōbe-shi, Japanese: [koːꜜbe]) is the sixth-largest city in Japan and the capital city of Hyōgo Prefecture. It is located on the southern side of the main island of Honshū, on the north shore of Osaka Bay and about 30 km (19 mi) west of Osaka. With a population around 1.5 million, the city is part of the Keihanshin metropolitan area along with Osaka and Kyoto.
The earliest written records regarding the region come from the Nihon Shoki, which describes the founding of the Ikuta Shrine by Empress Jingū in AD 201. For most of its history, the area was never a single political entity, even during the Tokugawa period, when the port was controlled directly by the Tokugawa shogunate. Kobe did not exist in its current form until its founding in 1889. Its name comes from kanbe (神戸, an archaic title for supporters of the city's Ikuta Shrine). Kobe became one of Japan's designated cities in 1956.
Kobe was one of the cities to open for trade with the West following the 1853 end of the policy of seclusion and has since been known as a cosmopolitan and nuclear-free zone port city. While the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake diminished much of Kobe's prominence as a port city, it remains Japan's fourth-busiest container port. Companies headquartered in Kobe include ASICS, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and Kobe Steel, as well as over 100 international corporations with Asian or Japanese headquarters in the city, such as Eli Lilly and Company, Procter & Gamble, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Nestlé. The city is the point of origin and namesake of Kobe beef, as well as the site of one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts, Arima Onsen.

Goshikizuka Mounded Tomb, view of Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, Kobe | The Real Japan | HD
Goshikizuka Mounded Tomb, also known as Sentsubo Kofun, is an ancient burial ground between Kobe and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge (which can be seen in the film).
It is the largest keyhole shaped tomb mound in Hyogo Prefecture, constructed around the end of 4th century. The site has been restored to the original construction. The sides of the large tomb are covered in fukiishi, which are stones taken from nearby riverbeds, typically used as construction materials in early examples of these kofun (ancient burial tombs).
An unusual and fascinating site with an almost palpable atmosphere, and some great views over the Kobe bay area and Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.

On the tour, not only did I walk on the inside of Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge but I enjoyed the magnificent views from the top of the Bridge tower, 300m above the sea. Many thanks to “Bridge World” for the great tour!

I was lucky to join a tour of the Akashi Bridge in November 2018. It was a clear day with not much wind, But you'll hear a lot of wind in the video. No really talked, so I did the same. I live on Awaji Island, connected via Akashi Bridge to the north and the Naruto bridge on the south end.
