Cataclysmic Cosmic Explosion
On the 21st March 2013, a massive star in a galaxy not so far away (the bright galaxy M65) ended its life in a cataclysmic explosion - amateur astronomers were witnessing a Type II Supernova.
Designated supernova 2013am, it was discovered on the 21st March by Matsuo Sugano (菅野 松男) . This short video includes his original discovery image, together with a blink comparison between two images taken with the Slooh online robotic telescopes: the first pre-dating the discovery on the 24th February 2013, and the second taken only 11hrs after the discovery on the 22nd March 2013.
Supernovae, asteroid, and comet hunters will often sift through hundreds of images taken each night in search of their quarry - often blink comparing them in the same way shown in the video.
Matsuo Sugano, who worked at the Akashi Municipal Planetarium in Japan, is no stranger to astronomical discoveries. He discovered a number of asteroids (asteroid 5872 Sugano is named after him, and asteroid 6155 Yokosugano was named for his wife, Yoko). He was also a co-discoverer of Comet Sugano-Saigusa-Fujikawa (C/1983 J1).
Type II supernovae are generated when a massive star runs out of material to fuel its nuclear fusion. With the forces within the star out of balance, its own gravity causes the star to collapse in on itself - it explodes in one of the biggest explosions known in the Universe. They often leave stunning supernova remnants such as the well known Crab Nebula - at its core, all that remains of its progenitor star is a tiny neutron star spinning at a staggering speed of 30.2 times per second. It's only around 18 miles in diameter but is so dense that a can-full would have the same mass as our entire Moon! It emits pulses of radiation from gamma rays to radio waves, which is why it's called a pulsar (Pulsating Star).

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
