Akayu was a town located in Higashiokitama District, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. As of 1967, the town had an estimated population of 12,860 and a population density of 313 persons per km². The total area was 41.10 km². On April 1, 1967, Akayu was merged into the expanded city of Nan'yō and thus no longer exists as an independent municipality.
