Sikandra, located only 13 km. from the Agra Fort is the last resting place of the Mughal emperor Akbar. Akbar was the greatest of the Mughal emperors and one of the most secular-minded royalties of his time. He was the heir to a long tradition of oriental refinement, a great patron of the arts, literature, philosophy and science. A visit to Akbar's monument opens before one, the completeness of Akbar's personality as completely as the Taj Mahal does of Mumtaz Mahal's. Akbar's vast, beautifully carved, red-ochre sandstone tomb is set amidst a lush garden. Akbar himself planned his own tomb and selected a suitable site for it. Akbar's son Jahangir completed the construction of this pyramidal tomb in 1613. The tomb stands in the centre of a vast garden, which is enclosed by high walls on all sides. In the middles of each enclosing wall is a monumental gateway. The whole garden is divided into four equal quarters on the conventional charbhag plan. Each quarter is separated by a high terrace or raised path with a narrow shallow water channel running at the centre. Each terrace has in the centre, a tank with fountains. A broad paved causeway leads to the tomb, which has five storeys and is in the shape of a truncated pyramid. The main tomb has a unique square design which is unparalleled by all other Mughal buildings.

Akbar was one of the greatest emperors in the history of India. However, during the reign of His great-grandson, Aurangzeb, the rebellious Jats under the leadership of Raja Ram Jat, ransacked the intricate tomb, plundered and looted all the beautiful gold, jewels, silver and carpets, whilst destroying other things. He even, in order to avenge his father Gokula's death, plundered Akbar's tomb, looted it and dragged Akbar's bones and burned them in retaliation. He was later sentenced to death by Aurangzeb.
The Tomb has suffered a lot, until extensive repair was carried out by the British under Lord Curzon. The neighbouring Taj Mahal was also looted, and two of Agra's gates were taken away.
It is located at Sikandra, in the suburbs of Agra, on the Mathura road (NH2), 8 km west-northwest of the city center. About 1 km away from the tomb, lies Mariam's Tomb, the tomb of Mariam-uz-Zamani, wife of the Mughal Emperor Akbar and the mother of Jahangir.
The south gate is the largest, with four white marble chhatri-topped minarets which are similar to those of the Taj Mahal, and is the normal point of entry to the tomb. The tomb itself is surrounded by a walled enclosure 105 m square. The tomb building is a four-tiered pyramid, surmounted by a marble pavilion containing the false tomb. The true tomb, as in other mausoleums, is in the basement. The buildings are constructed mainly from a deep red sandstone, enriched with features in white marble. Decorated inlaid panels of these materials and a black slate adorn the tomb and the main gatehouse. Panel designs are geometric, floral and calligraphic, and prefigure the more complex and subtle designs later incorporated in Itmad-ud-Daulah's Tomb.

This is the tomb is Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar, son of Humayum and grandson of Babar who was the greatest king of the Mughal Dynasty. He ruled from 1556 to 1605. He founded a vast empire which extended from Kabul to Assam and from Kashmir to Ahmednagar. His state functioned on the sound principle of peaceful co-existence with his non-believing subjects and was based on such seculat institutions as the Mansabdari he united the country under a uniform cultural, political and administrative system. He planted his kingship in the indian soil and made it an indigenous thing. Thus earning the honorific epithet Chakravartin. He made a nation out of a mob, which is why he is styled: Akbar the Great.

During the Islamic ruler Aurangzeb's time, the rebellious Jats rose against him under the leadership of Raja Ram Jat, they took the control of Agra fort after defeating Mughal forces. Mughal prestige suffered a further blow when Jats ransacked Akbar's intricate tomb, plundered and looted all the beautiful gold, jewels, silver and carpets, whilst destroying other things. He even, in order to avenge his father Gokula's death, plundered Akbar's tomb, looted it, opened the grave, and dragged out the bones. Aurangzeb was so furious that he captured Raja ram and got him killed mercilessly.

Akbar The Great [1542-1605], was one of the greatest rulers in Indian history. He was born when Humayun and his first wife, Hamida Bano, were fugitives escaping towards Iran. It was during these wanderings that Akbar was born in Umerkot, Sindh, on November 23, 1542. Legend has it that Humayun prophesied a bright future for his son, and thus accordingly, named him Akbar.
Akbar was a great patron of architecture, art, and literature. His court was rich in culture as well as wealth. In fact, his court was so splendid that the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth I, once even sent out her ambassador, Sir Thomas Roe, to meet the king! Many of Akbar's buildings still survive, including the Red Fort at Agra, and the city of Fatehpur Sikri, near Agra, which has a 10-km long wall encircling it.

The mausoleum is built partially in red sandstone and in marble, with a mixture of Hindu and Moslem design elements. It can be seen as a transition between the older architectural style, based on red sandstone and the new, with marble as the main element and finer ornaments and carvings.
The complex consists of two buildings, one being the mausoleum and the other a gigantic gate, connected to each other via a wide paved walkway.
The gate, known as Buland Darwaza (gateway of magnificence) itself consists of a huge archway and four marble minarets. It is more impressive than the mausoleum itself, which is wider but not as overwhelming. The architecture of the mausoleum is very interesting as is it a good example of the mixture of the use of sandstone together with marble. If you stand too long on the courtyard, you might be harassed by the many monkeys, which can become very aggressive. Inside the mausoleum, you find the cenotaph in a very small sober room.
This outstanding sandstone and marble tomb commemorates the greatest of the Mughal emperors. The huge courtyard is entered through a stunning gateway. It has three-storey minarets at each corner and is built of red sandstone strikingly inlaid with white-marble geometric patterns.
The mausoleum is at Sikandra, 10km northwest of Agra Fort. Catch a bus (₹22, 45 minutes) headed to Mathura from Bijli Ghar bus stand; they go past the mausoleum.

There were four Hindu wifes of Mughal Emperor Akbar. Amer Princess, Princess of Jaisalmer, Princess of Jodhpur and Princess of Bikaner. In which Aamer's princess Harka Bai was the chief and her daughter is known as Mariam uz Jamani. Haraka's father's name was Raja Bharmal or Biharimal who was the king of Amer (modern Jaipur, Rajasthan). Jodha Bai was the princess of Jodhpur, whose father's name was King Maldev, who was the king of Jodhpur. No mausoleum was built after Jodha Bai's death, but some people consider the tomb of Aamer's princess Harka bai aka Mariam uz Jamani as the tomb of Jodhabai, which is absolutely wrong because people only understand rumors as history. The information of the history of Emperor Akbar is found in Akbarnama which clearly describes all his wives. The marriage of Emperor Akbar and Amer's princess Haraka Bai was done in 1562 AD. Emperor Akbar's other wifes did not have any son, due to the blessing of his emperor Akshar Sufi saint, Sheikh Salim went to Chisti and in 1569 AD, Aamer's princess Harka Bai gave birth to a son named 'Salim'. Known as Jahangir On the occasion of the birth of Salim, Emperor Akbar gave the title of Mariam Uz Jamani to Haraka Bai. Mariam Uz Jamani means Pity for the world. The mausoleum of Harka Bai alias Mariam uz Jamani was built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir. This mausoleum is located on the edge of National Highway No. 2 in Sikandra area of Agra. The present ticket price for this Tomb is 25 rupees for Indians, which is an increase of Rs 5 per year. Very beautiful gardens have been built around this tomb.

History of Akbar’s Tomb:
The most special thing about this tomb is that Akbar himself planned the tomb and selected a suitable site for it and started the construction of it while he was alive. So, the main question is Akbar’s Tomb was built by whom? After Akbar’s death, Akbar's son Jahangir completed the construction work of the tomb from 1605–1613. During the reign of Aurangzeb, Jats from Bharatpur rose in rebellion under the leadership of Raja Ram Jat. Mughal prestige suffered a huge blow when Jats ransacked the Tomb of Akbar the Great, plundering as well as looting the gold, jewels, silver and carpets. It is said that that even Akbar's grave was opened and his bones were burned. As Viceroy of India, when George Curzon came into power, extensive repairs and restoration of Akbar's mausoleum were done, which were completed in the year 1905. Curzon planned for restoration of the Akbar’s Tomb and other historical monuments in Agra in connection with the passage of the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act in 1904, according to which he described the project as an offering of reverence to the past and a gift of recovered beauty to the future.
