10 Things to do in Nikko, Japan Travel Guide
Join us as we travel to Nikko, Japan in this travel guide exploring one of the most scenic areas of the country mere hours outside of Tokyo. Nikko (日光) ended up being one of our favorite destinations that we visited on our trip to Japan. After spending a month in the hustle and bustle grinder of Tokyo getting out to the countryside in Japan was a top priority for us. While in Nikko we ate delicious local cuisine (Yuba - Tofu skin), visited shrines and temples and hiked and marveled at lakes and waterfalls. If you're visiting Japan, and want to explore rural areas, be sure to include Nikko in your itinerary.

10 Things to do in Nikko Tour | Japan Travel Guide Video Transcript:
After a month in Tokyo, Nikko was everything we were hoping for! We knew we were in for a treat on the train ride over once we started seeing forests and mountains all around us and the town did not disappoint.
Nikko was the breath of fresh air we were looking for; during our visit we hiked through shrines and temples, cruised a beautiful lake at the base of a volcano, sampled some local dishes featuring tofu skin, and basically had the perfect city break.
So in this travel guide, we are going sharing some of our favourite things to do in Nikko, so you too can plan your weekend escape!
The Shinkyo Bridge you see today was constructed in 1636, but a bridge of some form has stood on this very same spot for much longer...even if its origins are a bit unclear.
Nikko is home to numerous Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. We focused our visit on the Toshogu Shrine.
Now for a quick history lesson; the Toshogu shrine is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. This was Japan’s last feudal military government, with the shogun as its leader.
Kegon is Nikko’s most famous waterfall. It stands almost 100 meters tall and the waters that feed it comes directly from Lake Chuzenji.
We were feeling pretty hungry after all that sightseeing, so we decided to find a restaurant serving up the local specialty: yuba! Or tofu skin.
I ordered the ramen with yuba and Sam got the udon with yuba. The tofu skin was fluffy and absorbed all the flavours of the miso.
Lake Chuzenji is located at the foot of Mount Nantai. We cruised around the lake for a bit, but then got off at one of the early stops to continue onwards to Yumoto Onsen.
Yumoto is a small hot springs town that is located in part of Nikko National Park. We then enjoyed a little walk along Lake Yunoko, before hopping back on a bus to Senjougahara Moor.
The Senjogahara Marshland covers the area between Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen. It offers some great hiking opportunities within Nikko National Park.
And that’s a wrap for our Nikko travel guide! This proved to be the perfect weekend escape from Tokyo. We visited everything you see here over the course of 2 days, but this place is even better if you can come for 3 or 4 nights. Nature abounds, there are countless shrines and temples to visit, plus the local cuisine was exquisite! Now you have a few ideas of things to do around Nikko when you visit. Wishing you happy travels and see you next time!
This is part of our Travel in Japan video series showcasing Japanese food, Japanese culture and Japanese cuisine.

Kegon Waterfall in Nikko JAPAN! 日光の華厳の滝 #世界遺産 #日光
The almost 100 meter tall Kegon Waterfall (華厳の滝, Kegon no taki) is the most famous of Nikko's many beautiful waterfalls. In fact, it is even ranked as one of Japan's three most beautiful falls, along with Nachi Waterfall in Wakayama Prefecture and Fukuroda Waterfall in Ibaraki Prefecture.
Kegon Waterfall is the only exit for the waters of Lake Chuzenji. It can be seen from a free observation platform that is easily accessible on foot, as well as from a paid platform at the base of the falls. The paid platform is accessed via a 100 meter deep elevator and offers the more impressive views. The sight of Kegon Waterfall in combination with Lake Chuzenji can be enjoyed from Akechidaira Observatory, which is accessible by ropeway from Akechidaira Plateau.
Kegon Waterfall is also a popular autumn color spot. The trees around the waterfall are usually most colorful from mid to late October. In the winter, the waterfall is impressive as well, when it freezes almost completely solid.

Nikko is a small town of 90,000 inhabitants, located 150 kilometers north of Tokyo, in Tochigi Prefecture. It is famous for the natural beauty of its mountainous landscapes, the architecture of its temples and shrines, some of which are classified as World Heritage by Unesco.
NIKKO TOCHIGI - Climbing Mount Nantai
Golden Week is a collection of four national holidays within seven days and it is my favorite holiday. We usually hang out with our friends and explore places we've never been to. But unfortunately, the whole week wasn't good for outdoor activities and it feels so frustrating knowing that it was the only time we had together. So we forget the weather, packed our things and start the Golden Adventure. We supposed to have a BBQ party after the long journey to the top of Mt. Nantai but the rain started pouring and we missed our bus ride to the campsite.
Although the whole trip was a mess and ended up eating our BBQ at home we still had fun and we enjoyed the majestic scene of Nikko. It was my most intense climbing experience.
The places we have visited:
1. Mount Nantai - 2,486 M (we had no idea about the snow ????) Mt. Nantai is the Mt. Fuji of the Nikko area. Its easy access makes it one of the most popular hikes in the Kanto area, so be prepared for crowds during weekends and national holidays. The hike is intermediate level but steep (about 1,200m elevation gain).
2. Lake Chuzenji - a scenic lake in the mountains above the town of Nikko and is located at the foot of Mount Nantai. Chuzenjiko's shores are mostly undeveloped and forested except at the lake's eastern end where the small hot spring town of Chuzenjiko Onsen was built.
3. Kegon Falls - One of Japan’s three great waterfalls and out of 48 waterfalls around Nikko area Kegon falls is the most famous. It is also the only exit for the waters of Lake Chuzenji and has a rushing 97-meter waterfall.

There's a beautiful view from the top of this mountain and it's worth every bit of the hike. The road leading up to the parking area is also quite twisty.

Irohazaka is a pair of winding roads that connect the lower elevations near central Nikko to the higher elevations of the mountainous Okunikko region. Iroha are the first three of 48 syllables of the formerly used Japanese alphabet (which is now known as aiueo), and zaka means slope - the Irohazaka Winding Roads were so named because together they consist of 48 hairpin turns.
The two roads were respectively built in 1954 and 1965 as some of Japan's first toll roads, but were later turned toll free. Today, the older road is only open to downward traffic and includes a pit stop from where you can see two waterfalls. The newer road, meanwhile, is only open to upward traffic as far as the Akechidaira Plateau near the top of the road. The plateau offers an observation deck with views over the Irohazaka and the valley below.
Spectacular autumn colors along Irohazaka can usually be enjoyed from late October to early November. Due to the autumnal popularity of Nikko, traffic can get very bad along the Irohazaka, causing delays to both cars and buses. Visitors are advised to avoid weekends and national holidays and to try to go as early as possible.

Colors of autumn - Irohazaka in Nikko, Tochigi JPN
Irohazaka refers to a pair of long winding road in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. Iroha was taken from the first 3 words of the old Japanese Hiragana and zaka (or saka) means slope. Uphill and downhill route are separated, both in one way traffic only. The former has 20 hairpin curves and the later has 28. My first stop was at Kurokamidaira viewpoint located 1,173m above sea level. This is the best vantage point to marvel the beauty of Irohazaka uphill covered with the color of autumn. Next stop was Akechidaira Rest Area located 1,274m above sea level. Here you can ride the cable car up to the observation deck overlooking Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji and mountains of Nikko area. I wasn't able to capture the downhill route on this video because the condition was not good enough for take-off. However, I had a chance to park at a pit stop overlooking a nice view of Hoto and Hannya Falls along the downhill route. Spent the rest of time walking around Kegon Falls and cruising on Ferry boat at Lake Chuzenji. I had a wonderful view of Mt. Nantai just before the clouds set in, and decided to leave when the rain started pouring on. The weather was constantly changing, rain to cloudy to fair and we had a bonus clear rainbow view on our way downhill. It was only a day roadtrip, and left out passing more beautiful scenic spots but everything has to end.
