Valentine's Day is just around the corner! It's time to 'fall' in love...with Akita!
With so many great reasons to travel in one place, it's difficult not to fall head-over-heels.
Our Akita adventure took us to 'Akita Art Village' (located close to the stunning Dakigaeri Gorge) run by performing arts group 'Warabiza'. Here you can enjoy an original stage musical before popping next door to Tazawako Beer brewery for a cold craft-beer (or three) and stumbling 30 metres home to your onsen hotel. There are heaps of entertainment facilities to keep you busy - ideal for a weekend away!

In May 2019 I visited Tohoku, Japan with my boyfriend. We only had 4 days so we went to Aomori and Akita prefectures. It was a great time to visit since it wasn't too cold. Before this trip, we visited Hokkaido (check out my Hokkaido video link below)

Edo Tegaki Chochin
Chochin (lantern) can create warmness in the space, thanks to the candle light coming through paper. Its history goes back to the 16th century. Thereafter, it is said that a proto- type of the current shape was created as an expanding and contracting type, made of thin-bamboo round frame past- ed with paper. It became popular among ordinary people as indispensable lighting equipment from the 17th to 19th century. Edo TegakiChochin (hand-painted paper lanterns) inherits the traditional methods to draw characters and family crests of that time. Family crest is a pattern to show owner’s genealogy and birth, displayed on the ornaments and arms, which is similar to heraldic emblems used by European nobles and knights. For each family, the detailed orders and rules of drawing are prescribed, but a craftsman can draw any complicated family crest by free hand, and keeps the “Edo patterns” with appropriate balance of characters and crests. That high-level technique is applied to new attempts. Recently craftsmen may draw animation characters, logos, or foreigner’s name in phonetic equiv- alent using Kanji characters. Lanterns are portable when contracted, but have a strong impression when extended. They are good for souvenirs to decorate the room casually when used as an interior accessory or a lampshade.
Forgotten by time - Kakunodate (Rural Akita)
It was just too cold to go out and shoot for a minute of footage today so I raided my stash of un-cut footage again. Kakunodate is a tiny town with a Shinkansen stop in Akita Prefecture. It has a good deal of History, a Samurai House and the last shop making Cherry Bark containers (they've been doing it for hundreds of years, too.) I went there for work back in 2013 and snapped some 60p footage around the town.
It's definitely a town worth visiting, especially if you have a rail pass, just because so few people actually do.

Japanese traditional festival - Koga chochin fighting festival (2/4)
Fighting to extinguish the competitor's chochin (Japanese lanterns) fires on the top of a long bamboo pole.
This festival is an annual event held on the first Saturday night in December in front of Koga train station in Ibaraki prefecture. In 2011, this festival was held on December 3rd.
To get there: take Shonan-Shinjuku railway bound for Utsunomiya, approximately 50 minutes to one hour from Shinjuku.

Master KabaZaiku Craftsman: 書店富岡さん- Mr. Shoten Tomioka
They are made by applying one of the following three techniques: katamono, kijimono, and tatamimono. Katamono is typically used for tea caddies; a paper-thin wood sheet and bark are wound around a turned-wooden block and glued together by pressing with a heated iron. Kijimono is used for box-shaped items such as letter boxes or trays; bark is glued onto a wood base. In tatamimono, a more recent innovation, layers of polished bark are glued to create thickness and then carved.

Iwate bölgesinden ayrılıp Akita bölgesine geçtik. Tazawa gölünün kenarında kamp yaptık. Kamp yerindeki çekimler kötü olduğu için paylaşamadım ama çok güzel bir yer. Kamp yapma niyetinde olanlar, Tazawako camping ground diye bir göz atın derim. Gölün etrafında alışveriş yapılacak yer yok. Tavsiyem istasyonun etrafından alışveriş yapıp geçin. Çadırınız yoksa bungalowlarda da kalabilirsiniz.
Kakunodate’de Samuray Caddesi’ni ve Aoyagi Samuray Evi’ni gezdik. Detaylar videoda ☺

We came Akita Prefecture from Iwate. There is a beautiful camping ground near Tazawa Lake. Recordings of the camping ground were not that good, so I preferred not to put it on the video. I strongly recommend this camping ground to those who want to do camping around the lake. You can check out the place on internet. Name is Tazawako Camping ground. There is no shopping center around the lake. You can buy whatever you want near the Tazawako station. If you don’t have a tent, you can choose to stay in a bungalow.
We had a trip to Samurai Street and Aoyagi Samurai House in Kakunodate. Details of the trip are on the video ☺
