Japan's Abe oversees puppy handover to Russian Olympic champion
On a three-day visit to Russia, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe took part in the handing over of an Akita puppy to Russian Olympic champion figure skater Alina Zagitova. The three-month old female puppy was offered to the teenage PyeongChang Winter Olympic gold medalist on Saturday by a group dedicated to preserving the Japanese breed. Abe arrived in Russia on Thursday for an economic forum. Zagitova fell in love with the breed while training in Japan and asked her parents to let her have an Akita puppy if she won at the Games. The puppy is called Masaru in Japanese, which means win or “victory.

Akita Prefecture Indoor Skate Rink.mp4
First, let me state that this video is only likely to be of interest to English-speaking crazy skaters like myself who like to skate at different rinks around the country and the world. So I am expecting that's only about 15 people on the whole planet.
In March of 2010, I skated at 7 different rinks in 6 Japanese cities from Northern Honshu to Western Kyushu. These trips were enabled by my Japan Rail Pass and allowed me to combine my interests of trains and skating. This video reports on my visit to Akita Prefecture Indoor Ice Rink - the second stop in my series. (Note this rink IS NOT the Akita Ice Arena).
This turned out to be my most enjoyable visit of the 7. This was a 1-day trip out of Tokyo, traveling 400mi North to Akita, skating almost two hours, and returning to Tokyo that evening. The ice was huge: an Olympic-size rink encircled by a 330mX13m speed skating oval (not restricted to just speed skates); the people were friendly (thanks to Shoko-san for providing background on the rink and finding how I could return to the Akita Shinkansen station by bus), and there were very few skaters. This rink is open from the end of October through March. Apparently, it turns into a swimming venue during the warmer months. You can see that the inner skating rink is sunken to allow this. Shoko-san said the structure, built without any internal support columns is about 40 years old and was one of the premier arenas in the Far East at the time. It was once much more popular with skaters, but interest has waned in recent years (why? Japan is now a singles figure skating powerhouse). Unfortunately, the rink has no professional instructors.
Judging from the March, 2010 schedule, weekday hours are noon until 8pm. Weekend hours are 9:30am to 7:00pm. Note that the rinks have full and partial closures at various times of day, changing on a daily basis (check web site or call for latest info). The adult entrance fee is ¥580 for the whole day, and skate rental is ¥420. The address is 2-2, Araya-machi Sanuki, Akita, Akita. (018)863-1241. About 25 minutes from Akita Station by bus: バス/秋田駅前発県立プール線(2番線)、所要時間25分.

Japan’s Most Faithful Dogs The Akita Inu
A breed native to Japan, the Akita Inu is a dog categorized as a large-size with a round face, triangular ears and a curly tail. Although these are big, tough animals, they have a gentle, affectionate nature and are known for their devoted loyalty. Treasured in the past as hunting dogs, they fell out of popularity in recent years, so in response, the birthplace of the Akita Inu, Odate City in Akita, began a program to breed and promote them, conducting a range of PR activities that include a petting space in the tourist office where visitors interact with the dogs. Recently, thanks to publicity from celebrity owners like figure skating champion Alina Zagitova, the Akita Inu has surged in popularity overseas too..

Traditional dogs as your new best friend
Japan’s Akita Inu had their day when a puppy was offered to the Russian Olympic champion figure skater Alina Zagitova.
But Akita is not the only native Japanese dog breed.
And such breeds are now in danger.
A zoo in Wakayama Prefecture, western Japan, is trying to find a breakthrough.
Kishu dogs will be showcased starting this autumn.
This, is real puppy love…
The litters were two months old when this video was taken.
Now the sisters are in month four.
The zookeeper says the canines were once hunting dogs
They have been recognized as national treasures for decades.
But why did this zoo decide to exhibit the hunters?
Asuka Kimura, Wakayama Park Zoo / The number of Kishu Dogs is declining compared to Western dog breeds. We thought it would be better if many people get to see and learn about them at the zoo.
Wakayama Park Zoo hopes to start a trend amid the shrinking Kishu population.
The head of the preservation society explains why the situation is more serious than it sounds.
Takeshi Hayashi, Kishu Dog Preservation Society / Kishu owners are aging. In addition, more and more people are living in apartments where they cannot have big pets. So there are less people who can own Kishu dogs. I’m concerned that they could be endangered.
Smaller Western dogs are becoming increasingly popular as people face changing living environments.
This man has been a Kishu-lover for more than 50 years.
He currently owns four of these medium-sized dogs.
We joined him in taking the five-year-old Koro for a walk.
Reporter / Don’t you walk them all together?
Man / No. They’re quite powerful. I don’t want them to get into accidents.
Just walking them could take up to 2 hours a day.
Man / It’s tough when I am tired.
But the faithful pooches continue enthralling him.
Man / They’re cute, and they’re so loyal to their owners.
The Association for the Preservation of the Japanese Dog says it issued pedigree certificates for 372 Kishu Dogs last year –
That’s nearly a quarter of the 1450 certificates they issued 20 years ago.
Local ownership of Akita dogs and Hokkaido dogs are also decreasing from its peak.
Spreading the fluffy friends' charm could be the key to keeping them alive.
