Akita fish sauce in The Japan News
Learn how hatahata sandfish are turned into tasty sauce in Akita Prefecture, Japan. (Full transcript below.)

TRANSCRIPT:
Welcome to the Japan News.
What would happen if you took a ton of hatahata sandfish and buried them in salt?
In Akita Prefecture in northern Japan, the fish are salted on the day they are caught. Then, they are allowed to ferment for a year or two.
The result is a pungent fish sauce called shottsuru, which adds flavor to dishes such as nabe stews.
As for that ton of fish, it would give you just 500 liters of the sauce.
Learn more about shottsuru sauce, and the hatahata fishery, in the Japan News on Feb. 7.

Driving in Japan's countryside
Hey guys!
It's been almost a year now since I came to Japan and driving daily has been great for me, not only because of the convenience it gives but also because of the scenic routes and beautiful landscapes, I enjoy especially in the countryside. Japan has an excellent public transport network so taking buses and trains is usually more economical in terms of time and cost, but there's something special about traveling by car, which I'll show you in this video. I hope you like it! Please like and subscribe to my channel.

RED KING CRAB vs. HANASAKI CRAB!! Big Japanese Food in Hokkaido, Japan!

T-shirts and caps:
SAPPORO, JAPAN - One of the things I was most looking forward to doing when I was in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, was going to the Sapporo Crab Market. The crab market is located outside the main seafood wholesale market, filled with seafood restaurants serving all things seafood, but especially plenty of Hokkaido crab.
Ume e dou Restaurant - After walking around for a while, we chose to eat at Ume e dou Restaurant, a small and friendly seafood restaurant on the main road, with a number of tanks full of a variety of different Japanese crabs. I really wanted to try both the red king crab and a Japanese hanasaki crab, so we tried them both.
Both the crabs were first boiled, then for the red king crab (also known as an Alaskan king crab from the Bering Sea), they cut half of it and put it on the grill.
The crab was absolutely sensational, a crab meal dream come true for any crab lover. The hanasaki crab was more about the roe, and the meat was sweet, but with a bitter complexion. The red king crab was the sweet, stringy flesh you dream about. Both crabs were incredibly tasty and fresh, and it was fun to compare them side to side.
Total price - 34,000 JPY ($304.86) for everything (5 adults ate this)
Melon - 300 JPY ($2.69) - Sapporo seafood market is also known for fruits and vegetables, and a cold piece of melon was delicious after the crab.
Kaisen-Ichiba Kitano Gourmet - Finally, one of the most famous seafood restaurants in Sapporo is Kaisen-Ichiba Kitano Gourmet, really a seafood palace consisting of a fresh seafood market and restaurant. We headed to their restaurant and I had a mixed seafood donburi rice bowl. The seafood was fresh and vibrant, and quite good.
Price - 3,210 JPY ($28.78) for my bowl
If you love seafood and especially crab, Hokkaido is a great island to visit in Japan. Right in Sapporo, don’t miss the seafood market for incredibly fresh crabs!

NHK Core Kyoto - Tsubo-niwa: Life Enhanced by Quintessential Spaces
Traditional Kyoto machiya townhouses have narrow entrances, and are long and deep. At the back lie small tsubo-niwa gardens, enclosed on all sides. Originally serving to light and ventilate the house, they enabled residents to comfortably endure the intense, summer heat. Over time, people applied their simple, austere aesthetic sensibilities to create beauty in these confined spaces. Discover the wisdom behind these gardens through the local lifestyle and the expertise of the landscape artists.

Sendai, Japan - Sendai Station (2019)
Sendai Station (仙台駅 Sendai-eki) is a major railway station in Aoba-ku, Sendai, Miyagi, Japan. It is a stop for all Akita and Tohoku Shinkansen trains, the eastern terminus for the Senzan Line, and major stop on both the Tohoku Main Line and Senseki Line. It is located on the border between Miyagino and Aoba Wards in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture.
Sendai Station is served by services operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East), Sendai Airport Transit, and Sendai Subway. The station is served by the following lines.
JR East
Tohoku Shinkansen
Akita Shinkansen
Tohoku Main Line
Senzan Line
Senseki Line
Joban Line
Sendai Airport Transit
Sendai Airport Line
Sendai Subway
Sendai Subway Namboku Line
Sendai Subway Tozai Line
Although the main JR train station and the subway station are physically separate, there are underground passageways connecting the two. The main Sendai Station is above-ground, and is a hub for JR East containing both the Tohoku and Akita Shinkansen lines and several other local lines. The above-ground portion of Sendai Station lies in Aoba-ku, and is situated so that tracks run roughly north-south. In the station's easternmost section, underground and across the ward border in Miyagino-ku, is the platform for the east-west Senseki Line. Originally, this platform was also above ground; but in 2000, the line was extended to Aoba-dōri to the west, and the line was re-routed underground beneath the rest of the station.
The Sendai Subway lies to the west, and can be accessed from the main station via underground passageways at both ends of the station. The platform for the subway at Sendai Station is actually closer to Aoba-dōri Station than the other JR lines in Sendai Station. In fact, there is a transfer-only gate between the subway and Senseki Line platform at Aoba-dōri Station.
The Namboku Line platforms are located on the third basement (B3F) level, and the Tozai Line platforms are located on the fourth basement (B4F) level.
Sendai (仙台市 Sendai-shi, Japanese: [seꜜndai]) is the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, the largest city in the Tōhoku region, and the second largest city north of Tokyo. As of 1 August 2017, the city had a population of 1,086,012, and is one of Japan's 20 designated cities. The total area of the city is 786.30 square kilometres (303.59 sq mi).
The city was founded in 1600 by the daimyō Date Masamune, and is nicknamed the City of Trees (杜の都 Mori no Miyako); there are about 60 zelkova trees on Jōzenji Street (定禅寺通 Jōzenji dōri) and Aoba Street (青葉通 Aoba dōri).
In the summer, the Sendai Tanabata Festival, the largest Tanabata festival in Japan, is held. In winter, the trees are decorated with thousands of lights for the Pageant of Starlight (光のページェント Hikari no pējento), lasting through most of December.
On March 11, 2011, coastal areas of the city suffered catastrophic damage from a magnitude 9.0 offshore earthquake, which triggered a destructive tsunami.
Planning a Family Trip to Japan
We’re off to Japan!
Next week the Todoing Family will be hitting up Japan and we are super excited. We’ll be flying into Narita International Airport, just outside of Tokyo, and then utilising public transport to work our way around the country for 12 days of awesome. We’ve finalised our itinerary so watch out for some of our highlights over the coming two weeks.
More info on our blog:
We’re going to start our trip exploring Tokyo, learning all about the city, it’s history and the technology of today. We will tour around city hot spots, including a visit to the Imperial Palace, Senso-ji Temple and the Tsukiji Fish Market. We’re also going to spend time at the *NEW* Digital Art Museum and the Miraikan Science Museum. We’re even going to fit in a Taiko drumming class and a trip to the Japanese toy store.
After a few days in Tokyo we will be moving down the country along the ‘Golden Route’ which follows the old Tōkaidō road. We’ll get our first taste of the famed Shinkansen Bullet Trains on our way down to the Hakone Region. Here we will explore the 5 Lakes region surrounding Mount Fuji. We’ll be travelling by cable car, trains, buses and even a pirate ship thanks to the Hakone Free Pass. We’ll even get a chance to try out a traditional family Onsen which should be great for relaxation after a busy first few days.
We’ll then continue our Journey to Kyoto, where we will visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine and the famed Bamboo Forest. In the evening we hope to explore Kyoto’s old streets and buildings, trying to spot the odd Geisha on her way to appointments.
After Kyoto we will visit the Byodin Temple and then Nara Park where we are sure that Harry will spend most of the day chasing and patting the Deer. He has asked lots of questions already on this topic, keen to get as close as possible as often as possible in between viewing the temples and shrines.
From there we will head to Osaka for a few days, exploring the Dontonbori area and Osaka itself. We’ll be taking a Mario Kart ride (we have been advised we cannot bring our own bananas and turtle shells) and trying out as much street food as possible. Jed and Harry have set their goals of nothing but eating sushi this trip but I am sure some Takoyaki (amoung other things!) will tempt them.
We’ll visit Nagoya Castle and then the Nagoya Dome, where we will watch the local Chunichi Dragons (who have a Koala as one of their mascots) play baseball. We’re also going to attend the Grand Sumo Tournament locally, and if Alex and Harry wrestling in their undies last week attests to anything, the whole family is excited to see the Sumo’s go at it!
To round off our Japan experience, we will be visiting Disneyland and Disneysea. Those will be great and almost get lost in all of the cultural, sporting, history and food activities we have planned above.
We’re super excited for this trip and can’t wait to share it all with you. We’re trying to share as much as we can with our boys on this unique family holiday overseas. We’re going to be tired, but it will be an experience we will definitely remember. We’ve brushed up on some basic Japanese too, so fingers crossed with a bit of planning, Google Translate and the basics of Japanese, it should all go smoothly!
Japan Post to raise $11.5bn in stock market listing
pan Post is seeking to raise as much as 1.39tn yen ($11.5bn, £7.4bn) in a stock market listing that would be one of the world's biggest this year.
The plan for the state-owned giant would be one of Japan's largest public share sales in more than 30 years.
The share sale is aimed at boosting Japan's economy and stock markets.
The country's economy shrank in the second quarter of the year - a setback for the government's reform policy.
We are hopeful it will lead to a virtuous economic cycle, a senior government official said.
Chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga said the share offering would encourage a shift of savings out of bank deposits and into the stock market.
Earlier this month, Japan said its economy contracted by 0.3% in the three months to June, compared with original calculations of a 0.4% contraction.
The revision beat market expectations, which were for a contraction of 0.5%, but analysts said it had not eased concerns about the state of the economy.
Lagging exports and sluggish consumer spending were the biggest contributors to the drop in growth. Consumer spending makes up some 60% of Japan's economy.
About 80% of the shares in Japan Post Holdings would go to domestic investors, reports said.
Shiogama Fish Market - Miyagi - 塩釜水産物仲卸市場 - 4K Ultra HD
Shiogama, located in Miyagi prefecture in Tohoku, is one of Japan's most important fishing ports and one of the busiest fish processing centers in the country. Shiogama Fish Market with its 140 stalls, is a very popular fish market and offers the best seafood all year long to both businesses and to the public.
Like in many other fish markets in Tohoku, it’s possible to pick-up whatever fish you want to create your own and extremely fresh Kaisendon (seafood/fish rice bowl) for about ¥400.
Finally, the city of Shiogama is also famous all across Japan for having the most sushi restaurants per capita in the country!!!!

(4K) The Best Sushi Restaurant 2019 at Nagoya Station | Japanese food travel 名古屋駅観光スポットグルメツアー寿司 極
How about eating sushi for a sightseeing gourmet at Nagoya Station in 2019? This time, I went to a tasteful miscellaneous building, Nagoya Ekimae Yokocho (Side street in front of a station). There are twelve small taverns across the open-air area.
This is a charming Indoor Japanese bars where you can drink and drink sake in the stylish retro atmosphere. You can enjoy a variety of Izakaya, from casually drunk standing bars to restaurants where you can satisfy your stomach.
You can drink it alone or with your friends. Unexpectedly, there are female customers.
Make a blossom for your trip, make friends for a night, this place of relaxation that connects people who you would not normally know. That is Nagoya Ekimae Yokocho
* 8 minute walk from the station.
In the meantime, the sushi pole is standing at the back of Yokocho.
An exquisite handful of skilled craftsmen who showed their skills at a famous Edo-mae sushi restaurant
It is a standing sushi restaurant that can be enjoyed casually.
Making full use of seasonal seafood carefully selected by the general,
Numerous sushi dishes with great care are the best.
It is also attractive that you can enjoy it at reasonable prices starting from 100 yen per line.
It is a superb gem for the general.
We are particular about suppliers and production areas for each ingredient,
In addition to local ones, seasonally selected materials are available from all over the country.
In particular, there are three types of shopkeepers who are proud of their purchases (three in summer and two in winter).
It is a gem that can hardly be purchased at a sushi restaurant in Nagoya.
Please enjoy the gem of the general.
In addition, we use red vinegar shari that has been evolved to suit all ingredients.
With a mellow taste with no corners,
The flavor of seafood is even more compelling.
With a standing-up style that you can enjoy casually,
It is a counter seat with a sense of liveliness where you can see the skills of skilled craftsmen.
Please feel free to enjoy the excellent owner's handful in a stand-up style.

What Japanese Prison Food is Like ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Japan has some amazing prison food, which should be no surprise. Inmates are served healthy, nutritious meals of grilled fish, salads, rice and soup - which are actually healthier than most school lunches around the world! Would you like to try what prisoners eat? There's a prison in Hokkaido that serves authentic meals to the public and that is where I went -- Abashiri.
Abashiri is in the very north of Hokkaido and is famous for its prison. Their Bangaichi Shokudo Diner is the only restaurant that serves authentic prison food in Japan, the ingredients the same as the penitentiary nearby. The meals will probably surprise you!
Prison Food Menu:
SET A: Pacific Saury, 2 salads, barley rice, miso soup (780 yen / $7.00)
SET B: Atka Mackerel, 2 salads, barley rice, miso soup (820 yen / $7.50)
It's called the secret meal because Japanese Prisons are very restrictive with access to the outside world. However, Abashiri is dfferent and they've opened up prison life to the public and it's worth a visit.
We also get a tour of today's prison cells in Japan. They have tatami mats, futons, TV, toilet and window. There are private cells and cells for 6 or more inmates. Japanese inmates typically eat their meals in their cells.
The Japanese prison life is regimented, the schedule the same everyday. Wake up at 6:40am and lights out at 9:00pm.
Meal time is three times a day for 20 minutes.
Where is Abashiri, Japan?
It's in Hokkaido's north, a 90 plane ride from Tokyo's Haneda Airport.
