Let’s Go! Adventuring in Akiu
Akiu is a famous hot spring town in Miyagi prefecture located South-West of Sendai. It is accessible from Sendai Station through public transportation by taking the JR Senzan Line to Ayashi Station, then transferring to a bus for 25 minutes South to Akiu.
Living so close to Akiu, I have been fortunate to visit many times. Every time that I have visited there is something new to discover. Not shown in the video but other recommended highlights from past trips here are the Kaleidoscope Museum, Akiu Craft Park, Akiu Winery and Akiu Great Falls. Akiu is beautiful in every season and with its many different hot spring hotels, it is definitely worth it to visit more than once.
Locations visited: Akiu Sato Center, Saichi Shufu No Mise, Sakan Onsen, Rai Rai Gorge, Yumoto Park
The Let's Go Series was produced to inspire my ES children to get outside and explore. Only basic English is used in the videos so that children learning English as a second language can follow along.

Through this channel, we have visited Akiu once before
, but I hope that this video inspires you to revisit because there is always more to see and do.

We had the opportunity to receive an all expenses paid tour of Akiu during a Friday, and thus as a business trip, organized by the principal of Akiu Junior High School and the previous ALT at the school. The tour includes stops that were recommended by the students of the Junior High School in which we explored in the morning and received presentation in the afternoon. It was such a unique opportunity as it combined learning Japanese culture and traditions while taking on the role as foreigners to allow students to practice their English and help guide sightseeing tourists around their community in the future. Thanks to Roley, and all the ALTs who participated in this international day and I hope to see you guys on the next adventure. Also thank you to the many venues throughout Akiu that hosted us and made us feel welcome in their community.

The Craft is made from a Carbonized Material, Which has been Buried for about 5 Million Years.
This Craft is made from a carbonized Material in the Stage of Fossilization, Which has been Buried for about 5 Million Years | The Last Bogwood Craftsman.
Enjoy a look at a craftsman who strictly keeps the traditional techniques alive and the numerous works that they create with utmost care.
Akiu Kogei no Sato (Akiu Traditional Crafts Village): There are 9 artisans and are dedicated to preserve traditional skills. It is worth seeing their master pieces and their apprentices working hard to inherit traditional techniques so they can pass it onto future generations.
At Mr. Takashi Kotake’s bogwood craft workshop and home in the Akiu Traditional Crafts Village near Akiu Hot Springs, He continues to make bogwood crafts.
He entered the road from the age of fifteen and had career of 57 years.
Bogwood craft once flourished as one of the representative crafts of Sendai, but with the halt of lignite mining in the 1950’s, it has been more than eight years since Mr. Kotake became “the last bogwood craftsman” in Sendai.
In order to prevent the craft from being lost, in 2012, Mr. Kotake decided to take on an apprentice with financial support from Sendai City.
He chose Ms. Ayano Suzuki, who had just graduated from a local women’s university.

S2 E1 - Akiu in Autumn Part1
•
It’s been a while since I posted a vlog! Lots of things have happened and have kept me busy! This season of my vlogs will focus and highlight some of the different adventures I’ve been going on, some of the tips and suggestions I have learned since being in Japan for a year, and some of the stories and moments captured with my fiends and family that have visited! One of my goals is for these vlogs to be useful as resource and to act as my “family videos” with everyone I’ve met while here in Japan!

Now, presenting 4 spots to visit in Akiu!
Things mentioned in the video:
1) Rai Rai Gorge: a beautiful gorge that you can visit at all seasons. Especially amazing during fall and during “light up” during mid October to mid November. It’s an easy walk that anyone can do. Take a stroll by the gorge then, when you are done, walk down the street towards the Sato Centre to get back quickly!
Rai Rai Gorge:
2) Akiu Sato Centre: Go here for information galore! Learn about Akiu as a town, get information about all 15 Onsens including prices, facilities each one has, maps, storage for your bags and even bikes you can rent! Events happen monthly so definitely stop by! The bus is located here too and the staff is awesome!
Akiu Sato Center:
3) Kiyo Mizu: one of the Onsens that offers a late day Onsen option! It’s located near a beautiful park!
Kiyo Mizu:
4) Ki no ie: a park with natural beauty, often where people camp and have “imoni kai” or “potatoes soup parties”. This place has a really good coffee house and is near an amazing nature park with a months long light up!! Look for future videos with scenes during it’s “night museum!” Shout out to @tevynpayne for coming on this journey!
Ki No Ie;
Let’s goooo!!
Seize the day!

TANABATA-SAMA is played and arrenged by Tomomi Haga using MalletKAT and Computer Music
In Japan, a very nice event called Tanabata will be held on July 7th.Tanabata is also known as the Star Festival in English. Tanabata is an event that originated from the legend of two stars called Ori-hime and Hiko-boshi.It is said that Tanabata is a special day for lovers because it is the day where lovers reunite. It is believed that your wish will come true if you write it on the Tanzaku and hang it on the bamboo sticks.
The Tanabata Festival is held every year at the Information Center (SATO-Center) at the Akiu hot spring resort near Sendai City.
TANABATA-SAMA of Japanese children's song is played and arrenged by Tomomi Haga using MalletKAT and Computer Music at Tanabata Music Live.
TANABATA-SAMA was composed in 1954 by Kanichi Simofusa. It was amazing that he could write and compose songs with such a dream in the midst of the Pacific War in 1954 and it seems to be a masterpiece that deeply influenced the hearts of children who were exhausted by war. Originally it is sung as a child's song for children.
