Japan Trip: AKIYOSHIDO Cave Largest limestone caverns in Orient Mine city Yamaguchi025
Under the Akiyoshidai Plateau, there are countless caves known as limestone caverns which were formed by erosion of the limestone. The largest of them is Akiyoshidai Cave
Akiyoshido Cave, the Orient's best large limestone cavern, opens on the south foot of Akiyoshidai Plateau. The cave entrance reaches a height of 24 meters and width of 8 meters. Inside, the cave reaches 100 meters in width at its broadest point and 80 meters in height at its highest ceiling point.
Its total length is said to be about ten kilometers. The ordinary sightseeing route, however, is about one kilometer long and includes 26 well-known sights, such as Koganebashira (Golden Pillar) and Hyakumaizara (Hundred Saucers).
The temperature inside the cave is a constant 17°C in all seasons. And since the tour route is equipped with accommodations such as walking trails and elevators, the cave can be explored enjoyably and comfortably.
As one would expect from a cave said to be the Orient's best in both size and scenic beauty, it is a mystical world in which large naturally sculpted works of beauty appear one after the other.
It was named Akiyoshido Cave by Emperor Hirohito, who explored its beauty during a visit in 1926.

Akiyoshido Cave, Yamaguchi ☆ 秋芳洞 ☆ Japan As It Truly Is
The Akiyoshido Cave will blow your mind. It is stunning and like walking through the movie Alien. It is in fact 300 million years old.
And Akiyoshido is still under construction - it feels like an underground Grand Canyon with a raging river going by you. Akiyoshido (秋芳洞) is part of the Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park near Mine City in Yamaguchi, and is the largest limestone cave in Japan. In fact, it's one of the biggest in East Asia that is open to the public. It stretches over 9km long (only 1km is open to explore, however). It's almost impossible to wrap your head around how acidic water created the caverns over your head through eons, at the rate of about an inch per hundred years. The stalactites from the ceiling grow about 3cm (1.2) every 200 years from limestone water seeping in from the ceiling, and the stalagmites from the floor grow about the same every 4 centuries.
Above the caves you can also walk over Akiyoshidai, which is a mammoth karst plateau - basically the remains of a huge coral reef hundreds of millions of years ago. Around half a million years ago the area used to be heavily forested, and the cave was first discovered about 650 years ago.
This is one place that should be near the top of the list of any visit to Japan. But sadly, this place too is ignored or mostly unknown to the experts writing books on what to see.
It is one of the Top 3 caves to visit in Japan. If you love this place, you'll also love the Ryugado Cave in Kochi, Shikoku (also one of the Top 3) - see it at:

I love it there, and the kids had mixed reactions :)

Fantastic Places in Cool Japan :
A limestone cave, Akiyoshi Cave, located in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is one of the largest tourist caves in the Orient. Akiyoshidai is a land of limestone formed over 300 million years. Akiyoshido Cave, which is considered to have the largest space in Japan, is spreading in the underground space of Akiyoshidai. The official name is “Akiyoshido Cave”, but the local people are sometimes called “Shuhodo Cave”. Akihoshido Cave is a huge cave whose size is still unknown. Recently there was news that a new cave was found.

Yamaguchi, Akiyoshidai Plateau & Hagi Town
Yamaguchi prefecture is located on the southwest side of Japan’s main Honshu Island. In this video, I'd like to introduce Akiyoshidai Plateau and underground cave, and the former castle town of Hagi.
The good combination of nature, culture and history is here in Yamaguchi.
My channel, Japan Silhouette, features beautiful scenery, traditional culture, Origami arrangement, and the warm heart of the Japanese people.
I also visit other countries and record my impression about them, perhaps from a Japanese perspective.
