47 Ronin Festival - Ako Gishi-sai Yamashina Kyoto 山科義士まつり
47 Ronin Festival in Yamashina, Kyoto. The 47 Ronin story is one of the most famous stories in Japan inspiring kabuki plays, movies, novels, TV dramas, and documentaries. On December 14, 1702 47 masterless samurai killed their late master's enemy. Though lauded for adhering to the code of bushido they were required to die but were granted the honor of seppuku (ritual suicide).
The ronin had been watched by spies especially their leader Oishi Kuranosuke. To throw them off, Oishi moved to Yamashina near Kyoto and lived a carefree life of women, wine, and song. When the spies' guard dropped Oishi stole away to Edo (Tokyo) and enacted his revenge.
This connection with the 47 Ronin is the origin of the Ako Gishi-sai Festival in Yamashina which takes place on December 14 starting from Bishamondo Temple and ending at Oishi Shrine. At a nearby theater they re-enact scenes from the story

In the late 16th and early 17th century of feudal Japan, the great warrior samurai class was struggling to maintain its once proud identity. Japan was at peace for roughly 100 years and was experiencing political stability throughout the land. Lord Asano Naganori was chosen by the shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi to be one of many daimyo invited to Edo to entertain the Imperial family’s envoys. Assigned to assist Lord Asano was the Shogun’s highest-ranking master of protocol, Kira Yoshinaka. He was instructed to educate the Lord on matters of proper etiquette. The two had many disagreements and disliked each other immensely. Kira expected a monetary show of appreciation for his troubles, while Asano believed this was his duty and was what was expected from his title. Kira didn’t take kindly to such disrespect towards a superior and continued to embarrass Asano at every possible moment.
The two’s dislike all came to a head when just before the ceremony was about to begin Kira called Lord Asano a country boor with no manners. Unable to withstand the insults any longer, Lord Asano lunged at Kira with his sword striking him in his face. Drawing a sword in the Shogun’s palace was a serious offense and attacking another man, specifically a superior, would earn you a one-way ticket to paradise. When questioned about his crimes, Lord Asano showed no remorse saying he only regrets he did not kill Kira. The Shogun handed down Lord Asano the honorable death sentence of hara-kiri, but also seized his 50,000-koku fief at Ako in Harima. When news got back to Asano’s castle, his ex-retainers, now ronin, exchanged heated debate, but ultimately settled on Oishi Yoshio’s suggestion to surrender the castle peacefully and focus on a plan for revenge.
Understanding the code of loyalty between a lord and his vassals, Kira became extremely paranoid. He increased his personal guards and lived a life of self-imposed house arrest. Oishi and his men took menial jobs and adopted factitious characters of drunken ronin wasting their time in brothels. With all eyes on Oishi, he divorced his wife, frequented red-light districts, and was often found in drunken brawls with the lowest of men. Their goal was to wait for Kira and his men to let their guard down and strike when Kira accepted their saddened lives as reality. This was ultimately the outcome and after two years had passed on December 14, 1702 (Genroku 15), a cold snowy night in Edo, Oishi and his men decided tonight’s the night like Betty Wright.
Oishi and his men attacked Kira’s mansion taking everyone off guard. After a long fought battle Kira was found cowering in an outhouse. Oishi gave him the opportunity to commit seppuku, but apparently his reply didn’t come fast enough and Oishi gracefully decapitated Kira with the same sword that Lord Asano scarred him with just two years prior. The men took Kira’s bloody head, wrapped it in a loincloth, placed it a bucket, and marched to Sengakuji where their Lord Asano’s shrine had been erected. They first washed the bloody head of Kira at the temple’s well and then presented the head to their lord’s shrine. After their ceremony was completed the 46 remaining ronin (one died in battle at Kira’s mansion) turned themselves in and were prepared to commit hara-kiri for their crime. On March 20, 1703, the 46 ronin followed through with their final duty and opened their bellies. The youngest being Oishi Chikara who was only 16 years old. Their bodies were later cremated and buried at Sengakuji alongside their Lord.

Ako 47 Gishis (The Loyal 47 Ronins / The Ako lordless 47 samurais) is known with slaying to the Kira Kozukenosuke Yoshinaka's house in movie and TV drama Chushingura.
Lordless samurai (the Forty-Seven Loyal Retainers) of the Asano, Ako house old vassal including Oishi Kuranosuke Yoshitaka, lord, Asano Takuminokami Naganori long quadrature, Akuri of the wife went and worshiped at the Asanos family temple that slept.
Ako Memorial Service for the Forty-Seven Loyal Retainers is held to hold a service for the Forty-Seven Loyal Retainers on December 14 when killed Kozukenosuke Kira who was the harm of the lord.
The Loyal 47 Ronin Story (The Ako Insident)
Perhaps the most famous story of avenge in Japanese history is the Ako Incident which took place between 1701-1703.
Asano Takuminokami, Feudal Lord of Ako, was appointed by the shogunate to entertain the imperial envoys visiting Edo from Kyoto. He was to seek directions from his official advisor, Kira Kozukenosuke. But Kira disliked Asano and treated him with malice and disgraced his honor as a samurai.
Unable to tolerate Kira's insult anymore, Asano drew his sword on him in the Edo Castle at what is known as The Pine Gallery (Corridor) Incident. Asano managed to cut Kira on his forehead and shoulder but failed to kill him.
It was strictly forbidden to draw one's sword within the Edo castle at that time and Asano was immediately arrested. There was also a law termed equal punishment for quarrels which punished both samurais involved in a fight so both Asano and Kira were expected to be punished. However, while Kira received no punishment, Asano was sentenced to death by seppuku (hara-kiri) in a garden of another lord's residence on the very same day without proper investigation. Seppuku outside in a garden was for a felon and inappropriate for someone of Asano's standing. Further, the Asano estate was confiscated and his family line was dethroned from the lordship.
The loyal retainers of Lord of Ako, better known as Ako Gishi, were indignant of this judgment and pleaded for an amendment of the order and the reinstatement of the Asano house. But their requests were dismissed.
Almost two years after the fateful incident, 47 samurais of Ako assembled under the former chief retainer, Oishi Kuranosuke, to avenge their lord's death and the injustice imposed by the shogunate. On December 14th, 1702, they attacked and killed Kira at his residence. They then marched to Sengakuji to present Kira's head to Asano's grave and reported their accomplishment to their late lord.
The Gishi turned themselves in to the shogunate right away and were sentenced to seppuku the following year on February 4th.

Kyoto Festival: 47 Ronin Reenactment at Bishamon-dō (Gishi Matsuri)
Who here has seen the '47 Ronin' movie with Keanu Reeves? What did you think? The movie is based on a famous Samurai story that dates back to the year 1703. It's one of Japan's most loved tales about how 47 Samurai sacrificed their lives to avenged their lord.
Last month in Yamashina Kyoto, there was a festival called 'Gishi matsuri' which celebrates this heroic story. It was based in Yamashina as this it was the place where Kuranosuke Oishi (a famous samurai) lived until him and the other samurais successfully took revenge. The main event of the day is a procession, but the day was also filled with exhilarating performances such as taiko drums, a bon dance and a dramatic reenactment of the Ronin story.

The young Lord Asano from Akoh attempted to kill another Lord Kira who was in charge of teaching the manner of the entertainment to Asano, but humiliated Asano again and again during the preparation for the ceremony..
Kira could escap from the attack without fatal injury, but the Load Asano was ordered to commit hara-kiri( suicide by killing oneself in the abdomen ) instantly and his land was confiscated by the Shogun. That was the beginning of the drama about 47 samurai's(retainer) revenge which took 1 year and 9 months to accomplish.
Akoh (the land of the lord Asano ) has been producing good quality salt while Kiras land has been also producing solt. Kira was thought to be envious of Asano because of his wealth brought from quality salt. This is one explanation about why Kira humiliated young Lord Asano in the Edo castle.
Oishi (the NO2 of Akoh castle) was the leader of 47 samurais. The plan and preparation of the revenge must be done in secret.
Most 47 samurais were in Edo disguised them as various citizens like noodle shop owner or carpenter. Many dramas were made among them before the revenge was accomplished.

The strolling garden of Gansui-no-niwa in Raigo-in Temple!
One of the sub-temples of Sennyu-ji temple, Raigo-in temple, was reportedly founded by Fujiwara Nobufusa when the court noble became a devout believer in Rev. Gatsuo, the 4th generation abbot of the Sennyu-ji temple, and donated a sub-temple to the high priest.
The wooden sitting image of Kojin (lit. Fierce God) and his five guards in the Kojin-do hall are all masterpieces of the Kamakura period (1192-1333) and are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. ALso called Ena (placenta)-Kojin, this statue, with its full-color glass eyes and old Chinese-style aristocratic garments, is said to be the only wooden work of its kind in Japan.
Not far from the Kojin-do hall is the noted fountain Tokko-sui, which is believed to have been carved by Kukai, (a.k.a Kobo Daishi), the great priest of the early 9th century, with his Tokko a dagger-shaped ritual implement his image always holds in his right hand.
Oishi Yoshio (a.k.a. Kuranosuke), leader of the Chushingura, in his reclusion in preparation for the famous vendetta in 1702, began living in Yamashina in eastern Kyoto for some time. This temple was sympathetic enough to issue and official domiciliary register certificate for him. This is how and why a number of mementos of the 47 Ako loyalists are stored in this temple including the tea room Gansui-ken, and the small Shogun (lit. Winning Troops)-Jizo image, which their leader Oishi reportedly deeply cherished.
The strolling garden named Gansui-no-niwa is especially beautiful in the autumn when the leaves of the trees around the lake change their colour.
