The settlement was destroyed in the Theran eruption around 1627 BC and buried in volcanic ash, like the Roman ruins of Pompeii, remarkably well-preserved frescoes, pottery, furniture, advanced drainage systems and three-story buildings have been discovered at the site. The settlement has been suggested as a possible inspiration for Plato's story of Atlantis. The site has been excavated since 1967. The name of the site in antiquity is unknown.

Prehistoric Town of Akrotiri , Greece
Version en français plus bas.
Unlike Pompei, no human remains have been found at Akrotiri, and only one gold object was found on the site, suggesting that the Minoans performed an orderly evacuation before the eruption, and they had time to take their valuables before they fled.
The Minoan civilization existed on Crete and its surrounding Greek islands, and flourished from approximately 3600 BC to 1400 BC. The eruption of Thera has been credited with its demise; geologists have called it the most destructive natural event in recorded history. The town of Akrotiri was an outpost of Crete which dates back to the third millennium BC and gradually developed into one of the main ports and urban centers of the Aegean.

History:
Akrotiri is a Minoan Bronze Age settlement on the volcanic Greek island of Santorini (Thera). The settlement was destroyed in the Theran eruption about 1627 BC and buried in volcanic ash, which preserved the remains of fine frescoes and many objects and artworks. The settlement has been suggested as a possible inspiration for Plato's story of Atlantis. The site has been excavated since 1967.

Akrotiri Dig - Santorini, Greece
I have been long festinated by the Akrotiri dig. It is one of the clues that make the island of Santorini, Greece the likely source of the Atlantis myth. This was my second visit to the dig. It was featured in the Daryl Hanna's first movie, Summer Lovers.
This active excavation is on the sound end of Santorini and well worth the visit.
Akrotiri ancient city in Santorini - Greece

In homes and in public places were found multitude of objects, as their owners left them.
Baskets, copper utensils, pots, tools and weapons, artifacts which attest metalworking.
The jewelry found in Akrotiri are scarce, probably because the people before leaving the city took along the valuables.

Island of SANTORINI: EXPLORING ancient town BURIED IN VOLCANIC ASH (1700BC, GREECE) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let me take you for a walking tour of this very historic site at the Greek island of Santorini. This is Akrotiri, buried since 1700BC when the magnificent volcano of Santorini exploded buried and destroying civilizations all around the mediterranean. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Santorini (Greek: Σαντορίνη) or Thera (English pronunciation and officially Thira (Greek: Θήρα), is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast of Greece's mainland.
Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. It was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, forever shaping its rugged landscape. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.
