Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre is located in Akrotiri community and has been operating since 2004 within the context of a collaboration among the Sovereign Base Areas, the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus and the local community. In 2007 it joined the Network of Environment Education Centres of the Ministry of Education and Culture. The Centre’s mission is to promote the environmental and cultural value, as well as the uniqueness of Akrotiri peninsula through its programmes and exhibits. The Centre offers educational programmes to organised school groups, whilst welcoming individuals, families and other groups who seek to learn about the environment. The venue includes exhibition spaces, a laboratory, a conference and video room, a library, a wildlife observation area, a botanic garden and a playground.
Educational Visit to Akrotiri Environmental Education and Information Centre - Basketry
During the months of January and February 2013 the students of our school participated in an educational program at Akrotiri Environmental Education and Information Centre. The theme of the program was about the traditional art of basketry. Our pupils learned about the materials and method of basket construction and tried to make their own as well. The training program was part of the implementation of the Comenius objectives regarding our local tradition and culture.
Cyprus lake blanketed by pink flamingos VIDEO SHOWS: VARIOUS OF LARGE NUMBERS OF PINK FLAMINGOS IN
More than 12,000 flamingos have arrived on the lakes of Cyprus, one of the most important destinations for the greater flamingo species due to its rich wetlands.
Each year thousands of flamingos fly to the Larnaca and Akrotiri salt lakes, following a migration route from Turkey to Africa.
The lakes are rich in food sources for the flamingos such as shrimps, which have a pigment that gives the flamingos their pink colour.
It is a very important habitat for the flamingos because here (Cyprus) first of all they can find food, then they can rest, said Michael Varnavas of the Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre.
In previous years climate change has affected the migratory birds, said Varnavas. Drought caused by climate change has decreased water levels of lakes such as Akrotiri, influencing the migration habits of the birds.
The last few years it (climate change) was a problem, because most of the flamingos they didn't visit the salt lake because it was very dry before 2016, and the flamingos did not stop here in our salt lake, said Varnavas.
Cyprus is often plagued by droughts and has suffered water shortages in the past. Scientists have predicted the island will be further impacted by decreased rainfall and drought due to climate change in the future.
Akrotiri and Larnaca salt lakes are of the most important habitats in the region for waterfowl.

Aphanius fish, Akrotiri peninsula of Cyprus
An abundant population of native Mediterranean killifish (Aphanius fasciatus) still thrives in the brackish waters of St George’s Lake on the Akrotiri peninsula of Cyprus, although in less saline waters in the area it is scarce and threatened by introduced populations of the highly invasive mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki). This video was recorded in Cyprus on the afternoon of 28 February 2018 by Dr Ian Winfield. The work is part of the CEH-led project “RIS-Ky”, which is researching the impacts of invasive and other non-native species in the UK’s Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus. See for more information.

Reverse Desertification - Cyprus [v.1]
The island of Cyprus is suffering with desertification. During the summer times the temperatures reach 45 degrees and during the the whole span of a year the rainwater accumulation is far from sufficient for the hierarchical distribution. It can be resolved if new theories are proposed, visualised and applied. It is the accumulation of rain and it's distribution that can define and revitalise the island. At this stage of the project we are focusing on the agriculture need for water.
This ongoing project is currently at the stage of visualisation of GIS-data into an informative and communicative way to bring awareness to non-experts on desertification effective layers. The aim is to later introduce guidance and proposals on the matter of rainwater collection, saving and distribution.
The geoportal website of the Cypriot Government provides a great amount of GIS data and all are open-source. It is from there that we take initiative and on the way to developing a software that brings awareness on environmental issue concerning Cyprus.
I would like to thank Heumann A. for the great interface of HumanUI for Grasshopper 3D.

SUMMARY
=======
The Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia (abbr. SBA; Greek: Περιοχές Κυρίαρχων Βάσεων Ακρωτηρίου και Δεκέλιας, Periochés Kyríarchon Váseon Akrotiríou kai Dekélias; Turkish: Egemen Üs Bölgeleri Ağrotur ve Dikelya), is a British Overseas Territory on the island of Cyprus. The areas, which include British military bases and installations, as well as other land, were retained by the British under the 1960 treaty of independence, signed by the United Kingdom, Greece, Turkey and representatives from the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities, which granted independence to the Crown colony of Cyprus. The territory serves an important role as a station for signals intelligence and provides a vital strategic part of the United Kingdom communications gathering and monitoring network in the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
The territory is composed of two Base Areas. One is Akrotiri (Greek: Ακρωτήρι pronounced [akroˈtiri]; Turkish: Ağrotur Turkish pronunciation: [ˈɑɰɾotuɾ]), or the Western Sovereign Base Area (WSBA), which includes two main bases at RAF Akrotiri and Episkopi, plus all of Akrotiri Village's district (including Limassol Salt Lake) and parts of eleven other village districts. The other area is Dhekelia Cantonment (Δεκέλεια Greek pronunciation: [ðeˈceʎa]; Dikelya), or the Eastern Sovereign Base Area (ESBA), which includes a base at Ayios Nikolaos plus parts of twelve village districts.

RAF Akrotiri leaving speech, craven
This is my last speech / Ring that I wrote in the Air Force. Unusually it wasn't about a person, but about the base it's self. It kind of centres on how small the Airforce now is, and how the Army seem to be taking over. But the Airforce is still an awesome career, as is the Army, and I have huge respect and admiration for all servicemen and women serving our country today. I will simply say thank you to you all, and I hope you like this video. . . Be safe, and may the force be with you.
Costandis wreck limassol
Strong winds meant the North coast (and many of our local dive sites) was blown out this past week, so to prevent staying dry, we headed off to Limassol to dive the Costandis and Lady Thetis Wrecks. Big thanks to Aloha for providing the taxi
