The beauty of staying in Oia is that you can have the town almost entirely to yourself if you're willing to wake up early before the tourist buses start to arrive, which is what we did! After taking in the stunning morning views, having a simple breakfast at our Air BnB and changing our clothes (in preparation for the warmer afternoon temperature), we took the bus from Oia to Fira.
In Fira we decided to rent a car for 24 hours for just 32 Euro with full insurance (this price does not include gas). Renting a car allowed us to see much more in one day than would have been possible using the bus system.
We started our island tour by driving south to the village/town of Pirgos, which offered the most gorgeous views of the lower lying towns and sea! We were amazed by how few tourists there were in Pirgos given its rustic charm and breathtaking views. We highly recommend visiting Pirgos! While you're there, you might want to stop in at the Kastelli 1663 Art Gallery & Cafe where you can get a scrumptious snack, like affogato (espresso poured over a scoop of ice cream...drool!!) for just 3 Euro.
Next we drove to Perissa, one of Santorini's famous black sand beaches. Perissa and Kamari (another town home to black sand beaches) are separated by the mountain atop which is Ancient Thira. Tim was especially excited to go for a swim in the cool Aegean Sea! The beach is lined with restaurants that provide comfortable beach chairs and umbrellas free of charge as long as you order food and/or drink, which is reasonably priced. Beware that the beach is topless!
After lunch and a swim, we headed to the Akrotiri archaeological site, where you can see the remnants of homes, roads and pottery dating from the 17th Century BC!! Our final stop of the day was the lighthouse. It was uncrowded, the view was fantastic, and the breeze was refreshing!
Today we learned that you have to leave the tourist centers of Oia and Fira in order to truly experience all that the amazing island of Santorini has to offer to visitors!

Today we drive to Akrotiri lighthouse, visit the archaeological site- Akrotiri excavations ancient Thira, visit Red Beach and wonder around an amazing traditional village called Emporio. We finish the day with a visit to Kamari open air cinema.
These daily vlogs were filmed (with a very shaky hand...oops) by me, a scatty Welsh 'lady' called Claire. My husband and I traveled to Santorini May/June 2016 for a week. We couldn't decide where to stay on the island so we decided to stay in three different towns : 2 nts in Oia - Kastro Oia Houses, 2 nts in Perissa - Meltemi Village and then 3 nts in Fira - Scirocco apartments. We also hired a car for the whole week. I hope you enjoy our adventures in Santorini .

Akrotiri is located at the axis of the sea route of Piraeus -- Alexandria and bears a lighthouse which is one of the best of Greek network. Located 18 kilometers from Fira at an altitude of 58 meters, the lighthouse was built in 1892 during the Ottoman reign by the French company La Société Collas et Michel. It initially operated with oil and its beam reach was 23 nautical miles. It was renovated in 1925. Its operation was suspended during World War II and began again in 1945. During this time it emitted a flash every 30 seconds. In 1983 it was adapted to operate electrically and in 1988 it became fully automated and has since continued to exude the maximum luminescence. Today its beam reach is 24 nautical miles.

Die Venezianer ließen im 14. Jahrhundert auf dem Hügel in der Ortsmitte das 1 Kastell La Ponta errichten, dessen Überreste noch vorhanden sind. In seiner Mitte stand ein Turm, genannt Goulas, dieser fiel jedoch dem Erdbeben von 1956 zum Opfer.
Leuchtturm
Im Jahr 1892 wurde am Kap Akrotiri, dem äußerst westlich gelegenen Punkt der Insel, ein 2 Leuchtturm errichtet. Dieser wird von der griechischen Marine betrieben und ist nicht zugänglich, man kann jedoch auf einer guten Straße bis zum Kap Akrotiri fahren und hat von dort eine gute Sicht zu den benachbarten Inseln. Direkt am Leuchtturm gibt es nur wenig Parkmöglichkeiten.

Akrotiri Lighthouse, Santorini, Greece: aerial views from a drone
Built in 1892, Akrotiri lighthouse is one of the country's oldest and a popular place to watch the sunset on Santorini island. Located on the extreme southwest part of the island, it is considered one of the best and most beautiful lighthouses in the Cyclades (the name of a group of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea). It was manufactured by a French company as one of the first lighthouses in Greece.
