Rare Black Flamingo in Akrotiri Limassol Cy

Rare Black Flamingo

An extremely rare black flamingo, thought to be only one in the world, has been filmed on the island of Cyprus.

The footage was captured on Wednesday and shows the black flamingo surrounded by more conventionally coloured birds feeding on the banks of Aktoriri salt lake on the island that lies in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
The bird is almost entirely black except for a tuft of white feathers on its rear and was spotted by environmentalists during an annual count of the island's flamingos.

The bird’s distinctive colour is thought to be the result of a genetic condition that causes it to generate more pigment melanin than usual, turning it dark rather than its usual pink colour.
Only one other black flamingo has ever been spotted in the wild before and that was in Israel in 2014.
Experts now say that this flamingo could be that bird, leading them to believe that this is the only black flamingo in the world.
Pantelis Charilaou, head of the environmental department of the British Sovereign Bases, said: “A melanistic individual is a very, very rare sighting ... basically its the opposite of an albino when the individual produces more melanin than normal.”
“From what have seen on the Internet, there was only one other sighting in Israel, so maybe this is the second one.”

Out of the ordinary events for the day:

Had to rescue a Barn Swallow that got trapped in a reed, had cut into its leg and pulled its leg half out trying to get free. Involved a wooden pallet, a long hook rod borrowed from a nearby farm and Wellies!! Still got covered in bog water as the point was in a very deep channel (worse than quicksand!! so had to be quick!) Assessed damages, had to amputate the leg as it was completely disconnected and would get tangled up in her wing again, clotted the blood, gave her shade and water and then released. The other barn swallows in the area fed her in flight.

Stopped someone from running over a chameleon and helped it across the road and into a tree.

Almost got totalled by a tourist driver who didn't look before turning into a road whilst I was doing about 80-90km and had to swerve to dodge him, then dodge parked cars and then dodge an oncoming van ... driving in cyprus!!! grrr.

Flamingos actually started to walk towards me!!!!

Lost my tobacco :(

Missed a star bird (Rosey Starling) seen at Phassouri, despite me visiting the area twice!

Saw a GREEN TURTLE and Baraccuda whilst hanging off a Cliff!!

Didn't see any Alpine Swift or Griffon Vulture at Kensington Cliffs!

Didn't see any Eagles or Buzzards!!!

Mystery Wreck discovered Jan 2016

Drone discovers ‘unknown wreck’ off the coast of Cyprus
AN unknown shipwreck has been discovered by accident on the west coast of Cyprus by a man flying a remote-controlled drone with an onboard video-camera.
The wreck is laying off the coast of Limassol.
The wreck is apparently not charted – but photos posted online show the vessel is clearly visible and sitting upright.
The discovery has caused a buzz in the local diving community.

Neglected donkeys on Akrotiri marsh day 3

Tied to a fence with no shade or water, not sure if the ones loose on the marsh have access to water either as they all seem pretty desperate to try and get some. Most of them have sores and cuts on them, the grey one that tried to get water had a cut with fresh blood on its neck. The loose ones also have rope around their necks, instead of head collars I presume, maybe it was digging in and causing the blood? It wouldn't let e try and move the rope. What's the point of keeping animals if you don't want to look after them properly? Breaks my heart ???? this was the 3rd day we had taken them water down, now I'm back in the UK and can't stop thinking about the poor things. Reported to the donkey sanctuary Cyprus and they said they have been there several times to give aid and advice but they are not allowed on the area anymore ????
