The greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is the most widespread species of the flamingo family. It is found in parts of Africa, southern Asia (Bangladesh and coastal regions of Pakistan and India), and Israel, southern Europe (including Spain, Albania, Turkey,Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Italy and the Camargue region of France). Some populations are short distance migrants, and sightings north of the breeding range are relatively frequent; however, given the species' popularity in captivity, whether or not these are truly wild individuals is a matter of some debate. A single bird was seen on North Keeling Island (Cocos (Keeling) Islands) in 1988.
This is the largest species of flamingo, averaging 110–150 cm (43–60 in) tall and weighing 2–4 kg (4.4–8.8 lbs). The largest male flamingos have been recorded at up to 187 cm (74 in) tall and 4.5 kg (10 lbs). It is closely related to the American flamingo and Chilean flamingo, with which it has sometimes been considered conspecific, but that treatment is now widely seen (e.g., by the American and British Ornithologists' Union) as incorrect and based on insufficient evidence.
Like all flamingos, this species lays a single chalky-white egg on a mud mound. Most of theplumage is pinkish-white, but the wing coverts are red and the primary and secondary flightfeathers are black. The bill is pink with a restricted black tip, and the legs are entirely pink. The call is a goose-like honking. Sub-adult flamingos are whitish-grey and only attain the pink coloration several years into their adult life. The coloration comes from the carotenoid pigments in the organisms that live in their feeding grounds.
The bird resides in mudflats and shallow coastal lagoons with salt water. Using its feet, the bird stirs up the mud, then sucks water through its bill and filters out small shrimp, seeds, blue-green algae, microscopic organisms and mollusks. The greater flamingo feeds with its head down and its upper jaw is movable and not rigidly fixed to its skull.

Out of the ordinary events for the day:
Had to rescue a Barn Swallow that got trapped in a reed, had cut into its leg and pulled its leg half out trying to get free. Involved a wooden pallet, a long hook rod borrowed from a nearby farm and Wellies!! Still got covered in bog water as the point was in a very deep channel (worse than quicksand!! so had to be quick!) Assessed damages, had to amputate the leg as it was completely disconnected and would get tangled up in her wing again, clotted the blood, gave her shade and water and then released. The other barn swallows in the area fed her in flight.
Stopped someone from running over a chameleon and helped it across the road and into a tree.
Almost got totalled by a tourist driver who didn't look before turning into a road whilst I was doing about 80-90km and had to swerve to dodge him, then dodge parked cars and then dodge an oncoming van ... driving in cyprus!!! grrr.
Flamingos actually started to walk towards me!!!!
Lost my tobacco :(
Missed a star bird (Rosey Starling) seen at Phassouri, despite me visiting the area twice!
Saw a GREEN TURTLE and Baraccuda whilst hanging off a Cliff!!
Didn't see any Alpine Swift or Griffon Vulture at Kensington Cliffs!
Didn't see any Eagles or Buzzards!!!

After landing in Larnaca I'm heading to Limassol where I had a host, stayed there for 3 days, did day trip to British Oversea Territory Akrotiri & Dhekelia. Then moving to Nicosia, where staying for another 3 days on the Greek side. Making everyday trips to Northern Cyprus, visiting Girne, Famagusta and Turkish part of Nicosia. On last day visiting very touristic Aiya Napa and Larnaca.Then taking plane to Beirut.
