AL BALEED Archaeological Site | SWANS, Resort & Ruins | SALALAH, Oman | Khareef Season 2017 | TOUR
Tour of Al Balid Archeological Park in Salalah, Sultanate of Oman. Al Balid was called Zafar a few years ago. It was registered in the list of UNESCO outstanding universal value monument. It is a famous historic site which has swans, monuments, beach and ruins of houses, palaces, mosques & cemetery.
Al Baleed’s history goes back to pre-Islamic times when there was a large Iron Age settlement in the same location. The city of Baleed itself was founded in the 11th century AD and rapidly became a centre of commerce for the frankincense trade. Today, visitors can explore the remains of a grand mosque, citadel and the old city wall and gates. As the historic remains are set in a picturesque nature reserve, it’s an ideal place to relax, enjoy bird watching or take a boat trip.

Ancient Cemetery in Salalah
Between the Al Baleed archaeological site and a small neighborhood was this old cemetery full of interesting headstones; many engraved with wonderful Arabic script still visible. Some of the tombs were elevated above ground. As well within the Al Baleed site there was another medieval cemetery adjacent to the ruins of an old mosque.

Salalah City of Oman
Salalah is the capital city of southern Oman's Dhofar province. It's known for its banana plantations, Arabian Sea beaches and waters teeming with sea life. The Khareef, an annual monsoon, transforms the desert terrain into a lush, green landscape and creates seasonal waterfalls. The Frankincense Land Museum, part of the Al Balid Archaeological Site, recounts the city’s maritime history and role in the spice trade.
