The Gol Stave Church in Minot, North Dakota, USA is a replica of the Gol Stave Church originally from Gol, Hallingdal, Norway. The original 1200AD church is now located in the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History at Bygdøy in Oslo, Norway. A USA full size replica of the church is located in the North Dakota at the Scandinavian Heritage Park is a park located in Minot, North Dakota
Scandinavian Heritage Park features remembrances and replicas from each of the Scandinavian countries: Norway, Sweden and Denmark, as well as Finland and Iceland. The park was established during 1988 to celebrate and preserve Scandinavian heritage. The first building was dedicated October 9, 1990. The park is supported by the Scandinavian Heritage Association and Norsk Høstfest both of which have offices at the park.
The Gol Stave Church Museum in the Scandinavian Heritage Park in Minot was constructed by Straight River Log Homes of Park Rapids, Minnesota under the careful and dedicated supervision of Myron D. Peterson, M.D., a past president of the Scandinavian Heritage Association and chairman of the Gol Stave Church committee. Additionally, it was because of the exemplary monetary support of D. Peterson and his wife, Gail, that others were inspired to help fund this magnificent structure which will display Scandanivan heritage for decades.

The Gol stave church is dendrochronologically dated to 1212. When the city built a new church around 1880, it was decided to demolish the old stave church. It was saved from destruction by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments, which bought the materials in order to re-erect the church elsewhere. It was acquired by King Oscar II, who financed its relocation and restoration as the central building of his private open-air museum near Oslo. The restoration, overseen by architect Waldemar Hansteen, was completed in 1885. In 1907 this early open-air museum, the world's first, was merged with the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, which now manages the stave church. The church, however, is still nominally the property of the reigning monarch.
In 1994, a modern replica has been erected in Gol as a tourist attraction in a theme park in downtown Gol. This replica is located some distance from the original site of the Mediaeval church. There is also a replica in the Scandinavian Heritage Park in Minot, North Dakota, USA.

In the Middle Ages, there were probably more than 1,000 stave churches in Norway. Today, only 28 remain, including Urnes stave church, which is included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.A stave church is made of wood, and the construction is made out of poles (staver in Norwegian), hence the name. Most of the remaining stave churches in Norway were built between 1150 and 1350. In the middle ages there were similar types of churches all over North-Western Europe. In Norway there was a tradition for using wood in artwork as well as in constructions, and this lead to the development of a unique technique that the stave churches are a perfect example of. The decoration is a fascinating mix of both Christian and viking symbolism.Due to the Black Death and the reformation, many stave churches disappeared. In 1650 there were around 270 stave churches left, and during the next 100 years 136 of them disappeared as well. Today only 28 of them remain - many in Fjord Norway.Norway's oldest stave church is Urnes stave church in Luster in the Sognefjord area. The church from around 1130 is on the UNESCO World Heritage list and belonged to a rich family. It is richly decorated.Borgund stave church in Lærdal (around 1180), also in the Sognefjord area, is the most visited and most photographed church. It is also the stave church that has been the best preserved, and several runic inscriptions have been found on the walls of the church.

The museum has more than 60 vintage buildings which show the building traditions in Trøndelag, from town and country, from mountain to coast and from Sami huts to city mansions. The stave church from Haltdalen dates from 1170, but the majority of the houses are from the 18th and 19th centuries.

O nome Flåm está documentado já em 1340 como Flaam. É derivado do plural do significado da palavra Old Norse flá lisa, plana pedaço de terra, e refere-se à planície de inundação do rio Flåm.
A aldeia de Flåm é um popular destino turístico e tem sido assim desde o final do século 19. Actualmente, recebe cerca de 450.000 visitantes por ano. Flåm is a Norwegian village with some 500 inhabitants, at the inner end of the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord. The town is located in the municipality of Aurland, in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway
The name Flåm is documented as early as 1340 as Flaam. It is derived from the plural dative form of the Old Norse word flá meaning plain, flat piece of land, and it refers to the flood plains of the Flåm River.
The village of Flåm is a popular tourist destination and has been so since the late 19th century. It currently receives almost 450,000 visitors a year. Most come to enjoy the spectacular 20-kilometer Flåmsbana railway between Flåm and Myrdal, one of the steepest railway tracks at 1 in 18 (not counting rack railways) in the world. There are also a few spirals. A former rail station building in Flåm now houses a museum dedicated to the Flåmsbana railway.
The harbour of Flåm receives some 131 cruise ships per year.

Norway in the Land of Fjords

It feels like a temple in the open air. You almost expect that, at any moment, an angry Nordic god will appear from behind a rock and carve another fjord from the very stones.
We stood on a flat rock, the wind blew gently and we cautiously peered over the edge - a sheer drop of 600 meters to the water below.
Now you know what ants see when they look down stairs! This place is called Preikestolen, meaning Pulpit, and everybody who travels through the fjords in Norway comes here to experience the sense of vertigo this massive cliff produces.
The view from this rocky platform is beautiful; the tops of the hills have been ground down by glaciers, reminiscent of The Badlands in the United States, and they are covered by a sprinkling of low trees that seem like lichen from this distance. The air is crisp and crystal clear. The sun is surprisingly warm and the azure skies, vaulting and open above us, seem infinite.
There are other beautiful nice fjords; take Sognefjord, for instance - it is also called King's Fjord as the Norwegian successor to the throne comes here to fish. Another reason for the name is that it is the largest in Norway. Hideous depths lurk in these dark waters with the sea bed lying some 1200 meters below the surface.
The fjord cuts almost 200 kilometers inland and when the ship steered into some of the side fjords, which are in fact quite independent, you get the impression of being tested for claustrophobia. The cliffs are so impossibly high and so close that there is a tangible sense of enclosure, of being locked within the landscape itself.
The landscape is beautiful and deserted. You look around in wonder, knowing that Valhalla is near at hand, the hall where heroes and gods feast before the final battle and the end of the world.
You fear that at any moment a Viking drakkar may glide out from the mists, full of merciless conquerors. Instead, you might come across a thousand-year-old wooden church, six storeys high, resembling in shape a Viking helmet. Or, more frequently, you'll find a herd of goats with bells round their necks.
The secrets of the hundreds of fjords, cutting into the Norwegian shores like wrinkles in her skin, are made more tantalising yet by the colorful houses of the locals. Many people come here to breathe deeply and experience one of the most beautiful countries in Europe, a landscape so sparsely populated that it just swallows up crowds without trace.
Norwegian fjords are a fisherman's paradise teeming with cod, mackerel, sea trout, wolf-fish, sea-devils and of course the king of the fish, the wild salmon. You'd have to search high and low for a better place to fish: a snack perched on a steep slope, its pillars washed by the sea. The views open out across the fjord to ragged rocks dusted with snow and the midnight sun gleaning on the dark waters. And the catch? None, except perhaps a meter long cod or delicious Salmon! It may look like a normal lake but it's actually northern wilderness. Norway is a country with most unreliable weather forecasts - they are of no use anyway, since you turn a corner and everything is different. We have two seasons, Norwegian say, a white winter and green winter. There's no such thing as bad weather. You can only be poorly dressed.
