Alabama Hills-Lone Pine, California
We spent a couple of afternoons exploring the Alabama Hills, just outside of Lone Pine, California, driving and hiking through the rock formations, searching for Arch and Past locations where movies were filmed. Dozens, if not hundreds, of Western movies have been filmed in this area in the past.
Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy and Randolph Scott all made movies here. Some other actors filming movies here were John Wayne, Gary Coope, Kirk Douglas and Spencer Tracy.
This is a great place to visit.

Exploring the Alabama Hills in California
Vlog #2
We're in the Alabama Hills in the Eastern Sierras. We've been trying to climb and explore as much as we can before we head to Bishop, CA for more boondocking and exploring in California.
Katelyn and I(Jordan) are a couple that travel full time in our cargo trailer that we converted into a living space. Most of our time is spent outdoors exploring the landscapes we travel through by foot, water, climbing, and much more. We are professional photographers and work seasonal jobs as outdoor guides/photographers.

We visited in early April and the weather was fantastic, Lone Pine is a nice little town, looking for water fill, they have a free water fill spigot at the visitor center south of town and lots of info on the area and where you can camp.

Alabama Hills Recreation Area - Lone Pine, California
The Alabama Hills are an interesting geological feature located just west of Lone Pine, California. Although this area was raised up as part of the uplift that created the Sierra Nevada, chemical weathering before the uplift produced much of the erosion that created this very different landscape.
The Alabama Hills are strewn with granite boulders that have taken on a variety of shapes - including some natural arches, one of the area's attractions.
Given its rugged appearance and proximity to Los Angeles, the Alabama Hills have been used for on location filming for well over 100 movies and TV series, including The Lone Ranger, Bonanza, Gunga Din, Gladiator, Tremors, Iron Man and others.
The Alabama Hills were named for the CSS Alabama by Confederate sympathizers during the Civil War.

Lone Pine, CA (Alabama Hills)
This area (Alabama Hills) was used in over 200 movies starting in the 1920's. My Brother Gary showed this area to me in June of 2008. I love the area and the chance to walk with my Brother in areas where there is so much history. I hope to go back soon. Thanks, Gary.

Photographing ALABAMA HILLS, CALIFORNIA- Behind The Lens EP. 012
This episode features Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, California- in this episode we made it to Lone Pine just a few short hours before sunrise. We only had 1 night here so we wanted to make the most of it- we met up with our buddies Carson and David and shot sunset, sunrise, and astro work of the stars. It was a jam packed night of shooting, aerial photography, and adventuring. We had very limited sleep in the car and it was brutal, but I got some of the best astrophotography shots of the milky way I've ever gotten.
The Alabama Hills are a range of hills and rock formations near the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada in the Owens Valley, west of Lone Pine in Inyo County, California, United States.
Behind The Lens in a mini- series that dives into the daily life of a landscape photographers life and what must be done 'for the shot.' It goes into what is being the pretty Instagram picture: the equipment, camera settings, struggles, hardships, and daily challenges in a vlog- style format.

Exploring the Alabama Hills - Movie Road Tour
I decided to do the movie road tour of the Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, CA. My friends were coming down from Mt Whitney, so I had some time to kill. It was cool to see all the locations where many movies in the past had been filmed and be on the same sets as some of the actors.
Gorgeous Views, Arches and Waterfalls near Lone Pine CA
On this Airstream Life vLog, we enjoy a spectacular sunrise at the Tuttle Creek Campground. Watching the Sierra Nevadas light up was magical! Then Steve tilts our solar panels for the first time to improve output and it works! Next, we go on an adventure first to the Mobius Arch in the Alabama Hills and then to the waterfall at the Mt Whitney trailhead. Amazing! We had never seen a waterfall with ice and snow before.

Lone Pine - Where the Real West Becomes the Reel West
About three hours north of Hollywood and a million miles from urban life, nestled in the foothills of the Eastern Sierra Nevada, the little town of Lone Pine, California and the nearby Alabama Hills has been the location for hundreds of films, commercials and television shows. Since the early years of filmmaking, directors and actors, producers and their production units large and small have packed up and left Hollywood for the great outdoors.
The Lone Pine Film History Museum celebrates, interprets and preserves the film history of Lone Pine, Death Valley and the Eastern Sierra. The Museum has ten thousand square feet devoted to exhibits, interpretive projects and displays that explain the 100 year film history of Inyo County, the other side of California. It also has an 85 seat theater that regularly shows locally-made films on Thursday and Friday nights at 7 pm and Saturdays at 4 pm. The gift shop carries a wide range of movie and western related gifts. The Museum is the site for on-going events, the biggest of which is the Lone Pine Film Festival every Columbus Day weekend. Guided tours out to the set locations focus on several different subjects including westerns, science fiction and modern day film projects.
Exhibits at the museum reflect the museum's extensive collections and include: early silent films, post war films, eastern, science fiction such as Tremors and Iron Man and the many cowboy heroes who worked locally including John Wayne, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers.
All of this was made possible by a generous gift from Beverly and Jim Rogers of Intermountain West Communications Company. Many items from Mr. Rogers's personal collection are on display in the museum including the cars from Trail to San Antone and High Sierra. Other film treasures on exhibit include hats and guns of many western stars, costumes from The Shootist, and Errol Flynn's coat from Kim. Also on exhibit are several silver saddles from Mr. Rogers, including Bolin and Jeff Flowers.
Seasons Open: Open year round, seven days a week, except for Christmas and New Years Day.
Hours Open: 10 am to 6 pm (Mon, Tues, Wed,); 10 am to 7 pm (Thurs, Fri, Sat); 10 am to 4pm (Sun)
Fees: Adults $5, children free, Members of the Museum free.
Alabama Hills - Part 1
Alabama Hills! This place is absolutely beautiful! Located in Lone Pine, California, at the base of Mount Whitney in the Eastern Sierra's. Alabama Hills is located on BLM land, so it's free to camp on any of the dirt pull off roads. We were lucky to find a perfect location up on a hill away from the main road, so Junior was able to run around in the dirt.
The beautiful rock formations of the hills bordered by a vast open plain rising majestically to the snow capped mountains beyond has been a prime filming location since the early 1900s. Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States, towers above Alabama Hills and is a short drive up the road where you'll find gorgeous pine tree's with the roaring river.
In the part 1 video, we explore some local trails to a few different arches: Mobius Arch and Eye of Alabama Arch. We also took Whitney Portal Road up into the mountains to cool off and check out the beautiful scenery with trees and the river.
We had so much fun and explored so much, there will be 2-3 videos on this trip, we hope you enjoy this Part 1 of our adventure up the 395!
