SUMMARY
=======
The Alabama State Capitol, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the First Confederate Capitol, is the state capitol building for Alabama. It is located on Capitol Hill, originally Goat Hill, in Montgomery. It was declared a National Historic Landmark on December 19, 1960.Alabama has had five political capitals during its history. The first was the territorial capital in St. Stephens in 1817, followed by the state convention in Huntsville in 1819, then the first permanent capital in Cahaba in 1820. It was then moved to Tuscaloosa in 1826, until coming to rest in Montgomery in 1846. The current structure is the state's fourth purpose-built capitol building, with the first at Cahaba, the second at Tuscaloosa, and the last two in Montgomery. The first capitol building in Montgomery, located where the current building stands, burned after only two years. The current building was completed in 1851, although additional wings were added over the course of the following 140 years.The current capitol building temporarily served as the Confederate Capitol while Montgomery served as the first political capital of the Confederate States of America in 1861, before being moved to Richmond, Virginia. Meeting in the Senate Chamber, the Provisional Constitution of the Confederate States was drawn up by the Montgomery Convention on February 4, 1861. The convention also adopted the Permanent Constitution here on March 11, 1861. Over one hundred years later the third Selma to Montgomery march ended at the front marble staircase of the Capitol, with the marches and events surrounding them directly leading to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.Architecturally, the building is Greek Revival in style with some Beaux-Arts influences. The central core of the building, as well as the east wing to the rear of the structure, is three-stories over a below-grade basement. The north and south wings are two-stories over a raised basement. The front facade that is seen today is approximately 350 feet (110 m) wide and 119 feet (36 m) tall from ground level to the top of the lantern on the dome.

The History Of Lynchings In America. STUDY Released
On Tuesday, the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Ala., released a report on the history of lynchings in the United States, the result of five years of research and 160 visits to sites around the South. The authors of the report compiled an inventory of 3,959 victims of “racial terror lynchings” in 12 Southern states from 1877 to 1950.
Next comes the process of selecting lynching sites where the organization plans to erect markers and memorials, which will involve significant fund-raising, negotiations with distrustful landowners and, almost undoubtedly, intense controversy.
The process is intended, Mr. Stevenson said, to force people to reckon with the narrative through-line of the country’s vicious racial history, rather than thinking of that history in a short-range, piecemeal way.
“Lynching and the terror era shaped the geography, politics, economics and social characteristics of being black in America during the 20th century,” Mr. Stevenson said, arguing that many participants in the great migration from the South should be thought of as refugees fleeing terrorism rather than people simply seeking work.

Alabama State Flag
Hi Folks, Patrick Page here, I’m here to talk about the Alabama state flag, just like the one behind me here. It's a beautiful flag, its the St. Andrews Cross on a white field, crimson red cross. Alabama entered the union in 1819, and it wasn’t until it seceded in 1891 that it adopted a flag of its own. Imagine all that time not having a flag. Wow! The first flag was designed by some Montgomery women. Hopefully we have a picture behind me so you can see that. Because they had left the union the flag was referred to as The Republic of Alabama Flag, well that particular flag did not fly long. On February 10, 1861 one month after it was adopted the flag was damaged in a severe storm and was moved to the governor's office never to fly over Alabama again. So what did they do? They just seceded from the states, they decided to fly the confederate flags. So that's what they did from 1861 to 1865. After the war they raised the United States flag over Alabama and that flew until 1891 when Alabama decided to design a unique state flag as in again the one behind me. So there you have it folks, if you have any interest in the Alabama state flag we have it. Were at flag-works.com Hope to see you here again thanks bye. Visit or website flag-works.com
