Rockburn Presents - Martha Henry
She is often described as Canada's First Lady of the Stage. Martha Henry was in fact born in the United States, but came to Canada in her 20's. Born Martha Buhs in Detroit, Michigan, Henry studied acting at Carnegie Tech, in Pittsburgh, and at the National Theatre School, in Montreal. Henry moved to Stratford in 1962 and made her stage debut as Miranda in The Tempest. Under director John Hirsch, she starred in A Midsummer Night's Dream and, with director Robin Phillips, she gave a highly praised performance of Isabella in Measure for Measure. In 1980, she won her first Genie for her role as Antonia opposite Bruno Gerussi in the CBC series The Newcomers. She was also awarded several Gemini Awards for her roles in the TV series Mount Royal, Glory Enough For All and Emily of New Moon. As a director at Stratford, she gave her guidance to several plays including Timothy Findley's Elizabeth Rex, Of Mice and Men starring Graham Greene and The Three Sisters. In 1996, she was awarded the Governor General's Award for Performing Arts. Martha Henry is now director of the Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre, in Stratford, Ontario.
Ken Rockburn spoke to Martha Henry in downtown Stratford.

The accolades for Margaret have long since passed. Jimmy's unrequited love of her has driven him to the bottle. Transcript:
I had a dream yesterday afternoon.
In the dream I was drunk, I could feel a turtle head poking out.
It felt good, it felt like I was having sex with myself.
Then I murdered god and ate breakfast.
I had a pet pig named bacon
I fed him hot dogs, nothing is sacred anymore.
Everything left thats beautiful drinks soda now
i'm never going to brush my teeth again
not because i'm lazy, but because none of the toothpaste brands have had any good advertising campaigns lately so I can't remember which one more dentists recommend.
They feed cattle antibiotics to make them fat, they feed me antibiotics to keep me fat, then they tell me to eat pro biotics to stay healthy. There is a conspiracy there. The doctors are funding a war on both sides at the microscopic level, and the worst part about it is they'll probly get away with it.
Hold on i'm thinking. I gotta move 6 boxes for my grandma later
Curt Carlyle, professional juggler in Portland, Oregon
Curt Carlyle, a 32-year-old Portlander, taught himself to juggle 11 years ago on a whim. Now he makes a living at it, performing at carnivals, libraries and vaudeville shows. It's an unconventional lifestyle in a city filled with people doing what they love, not necessarily what will make them a fortune.
Carlyle demonstrated some of his routine at the Aladdin Theater recently.
