Álafoss is a waterfall on the river Varmá in Mosfellsbær, Iceland. A wool factory of the same name has adjoined the waterfall since 1896, when a local farmer imported machinery to process wool using the energy from the waterfall. During World War II, barracks were constructed there for British soldiers. Álafoss played a major role in the founding and growth of the town of Mosfellsbær. The band Sigur Rós has a studio named Sundlaugin at Álafoss, and the otherwise untitled fifth track on the band's album is nicknamed after the area.

A short interview with the owner of The Alafoss Wool Shop in the little picturesque village Mosfellsbaer, Iceland. Alafoss was once a bustling Wool Factory but the old factory building and it's surroundings have been renovated and turned into art studios and shops.

Local shop owner Gudmundur Arnar introduces us to the old wool factory area Alafoss which is now home to many artists and local crafts. A natural wonder in Mosfellsbaer, Iceland. Álafoss

Álafoss since 1896

One of the major attractions in Mosfellsbær, in 20 minutes driving distance from Reykjavík, is the Álafoss factory outlet where Icelands woollens industry was launched. The store is housed in the old factory premises which for decades were the leading manufacturer and exporter of Icelandic woollens. The name, Álafoss, is derived from the warm waterfall, behind the factory, that drove its mills. In homage to this heritage, the store exhibits a selection of old knitting machinery and photographs from the early days, which forms the basis for a museum. There you can find a huge selection of woollen sweaters ranging from traditional styles to high fashion, along with woollen accessories, arts, crafts and souvenirs in reasonable prices.
How to get there

The easiest way to get to Álafoss, from Reykjavik, is to take road 1 to Mosfellsbær,. Then you pass through three traffic circles and make a right turn at the fourth one. Drive ca. 800 meters (2 minute) until you reach the Álafoss shop, on your left.

Das ist der Golden Circle: Þingvellir, Großer Geysir und Gullfoss | Backpacking Island | VLOG #68

Das ist der Golden Circle, mit seinen Sehenswürdigkeiten Þingvellir, dem großen Geysir und Islands mächtigstem Wasserfall Gullfoss. In diesem Backpacking Vlog aus Island könnt ihr mit uns die schönen Seiten des Goldenen Kreises erleben. Diese Fahrt ist wirklich ein Traum und landschaftlich ein absolutes Highlight. Unsere erste Station war das Woll-Outlet Alafoss in Mosfellsbær. Im Nationalpark Þingvellir haben wir einige Stunden verbracht und sind in Islands Geschichte eingetaucht. Außerdem haben wir dort den tollen Wasserfall Öxarárfoss bewundert. Danach hat unser Weg uns zum großen Geysir geführt. Hier haben wir auch den Ausbruch sehen können. Unseren Tag haben wir mit einem Besuch bei dem atemberaubenden Gullfoss beendet.
