From Alagadi Turtle Beach to Kyrenia in 4mins ~ Alagadi'den Girne'ye 4dk North Cyprus
Northern Cyprus hosts some of the most important turtle nesting beaches in the Mediterranean. Loggerhead and green turtles, both of which are endangered species, nest on the sandy beaches of Alagadi and the Karpaz peninsular in Northern Cyprus.
Marine turtles begin their lives on land, where they emerge from eggs, after 45-60 days incubation in the sand. On reaching the sea, they swim frantically out to offshore waters where they remain for the rest of their lives, the only exception being when adult females come ashore to lay their eggs. It is estimated that only one hatchling in two thousand will survive to maturity. When they are 25-30 years old, and 1-2 meters in length, adult males and females migrate to waters off nesting beaches to feed and mate.
These species are both endangered, especially the green turtle, with Cyprus and Turkey being the only known nesting sites. In 1991, with increasing awareness of the plight of marine turtles in the Mediterranean, the Society for the Protection of Turtles in North Cyprus contacted Glasgow University for assistance. This resulted in the Glasgow University Turtle Conservation Project initiated in 1992. Student volunteers work alongside volunteers from these non-governmental organizations and the local Department of Environmental Protection. Throughout the coastline of Northern Cyprus some eighty beaches are monitored from May until October.
On Alagadi beach there are nightly Turtle Project patrols to record detailed information about nesting sites and habits of the visitors. The nesting season runs from May until early August whilst the hatching season is from late July until late September. It is possible to join these nightly patrols by prior arrangement and you may be lucky enough to see a female turtle laying her eggs or hatchlings scurrying into the sea.
Since 1992 over 200 students and staff from British universities have taken part in the annual monitoring and conservation of marine turtles in Northern Cyprus. Work is carried out at the request and in conjunction with members of the local Society for the Protection of Turtles and the local Department of Environmental Protection.
In the Mediterranean, only the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) are known to nest. It is estimated that as few as 300-400 green and 2000 loggerhead females nest annually, both being considered as regionally endangered. Both species nest in Northern Cyprus.
Loggerhead release - Alagadi Turtle Beach - North Cyprus
Releasing of an injured loggerhead as a result of fishery by-catch on the north coast of Cyprus.
Project leader marine biologist Robin Snape and his team were able to resect a fishing hook and care for the loggerhead and successfully release back into the ocean at Alagadi Turtle Beach in Kyrenia, North Cyprus on 20th February 2017 after logging details and tagging its flippers.

Alagadi is a lovely, sandy beach surrounded by safe, shallow water. There is a small island a short distance from the beach, but the area surrounding it is slightly rocky, so take care if you decide to explore it! The facilities at Alagadi are limited, but during the summer months, Green Turtles Beach Bar serves snacks and refreshments, and there are toilets nearby. A fantastic feature of this beach is the green and loggerhead turtles which come to lay their beach on it in the summer. During the egg-laying season, the beach area for sitting on is marked out. It's important not to drop rubbish on this beach as it could harm the turtles.

We were lucky enough to be in Northern Cyprus in late July and to see a turtle nest being uncovered and then were able to release to baby turtles into the sea that evening.
Below is a bit more information on the Turtles in Northern Cyprus ...
Can you imagine a sight more heart warming than watching baby turtles, newly hatched from their little eggs, running towards the sea as they face their new life?
This is a common occurrence that you can take part in to watch in certain beaches in North Cyprus.
The mother turtle will typically come to shore in the middle of the night to lay her eggs North Cyprus shores during the spring month of May to furiously dig down a 40cm deep hole in the sand, where she hide her eggs and keep them protected with a covering of the cool sand until July.
The mother turtle’s job is now complete until the baby turtles hatch in July, where they have been developing amidst the cool sands where air is trapped.
In June, two months later, the baby turtles escape from their little holes in the coolest times of the day, in a hectic rush to reach to the sea and begin their life.
The first thing a newly hatched baby turtle does is head towards the nearest light it can see, which means we usually see them scuttling off towards the sea as they see the moons reflection in the sea.
However, sadly, this can not always be the case, as most beaches now have buildings and other developments taking place on the coastline, which confuses the newly hatched turtles, causing them to take the wrong direction and most likely not survive.
North Cyprus takes great pride in protecting these turtles and has created a safe haven for over 300 green turtles and countless loggerhead turtles by providing special beaches for them to lay their eggs.
The green and loggerhead turtles are listed under the endangered species list, and North Cyprus is working very hard to help protect these gentle creatures.
