Alagalla Mountain, Sri Lanka | Travel Vlog 01
Alagalla (Sinhalese: අලගල්ල, literal translation: Tuber rock) Mountain Range is situated at the boundaries of the Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces in Sri Lanka. Along with the surrounding Bathalegala (බතලේගල) also known as Bible Rock, Uthuwankanda (උතුවන්කන්ද), Devanagala (දෙවනගල), Ambuluwawa (අම්බුළුවාව), Knuckles Mountain Range and Hanthana (හන්තාන) Mountain Range, Alagalla mountain has served as a natural defense location for nearly five centuries (1505–1948) against the Portuguese, Dutch and English invasions aimed at the Kandyan Kingdom.
Alagalla mountains can be reached by taking either the Colombo-Kandy line to Ihalakotte railway station, or by taking the Kandy-Poththapitiya bus from Pilimathalawa to Poththapitya junction.
If following the Ihalakotte route, trekking can be started at Ihalakotte railway station through the Ihalakotte village. The 6 m (20 ft) high Dekinda ella (දෙකිඳ ඇල්ල) waterfall, served by the Alagalla forest reserve,[11] can also be viewed slightly off-route. Alternatively, a slightly longer trekking path via Poththapitiya can be reached by taking the Kandy-Poththapitiya bus route to Poththapitiya junction from Pilimathalawa. In both routes, the support of a local guide is strongly encouraged.
The summit of the Alagalla mountain Range is a platform to witness the view of the other surrounding mountains, including Bathalegala (බතලේගල) also known as Bible Rock, Devanagala (දෙවනගල), Ambuluwawa (අම්බුළුවාව), Knuckles Mountain Range and Hanthana (හන්තාන) Mountain Range.

Alagalla Mountain Range in Sri Lanka ????????
The railway lines to upcountry were established by the English once the Kandyan Kingdom was absorbed into the British Empire in 1815. However, extending the already working Colombo-Ambepussa (අඹේපුස්ස) mainline[2][3] across the Alagalla mountain to Kandy proved to be extremely challenging as it had to be navigated around a waterfall, Meeyan Ella (මීයන් ඇල්ල) about 100 ft (30 m) high falling directly on the planned route and across a steeply inclined solid rock of more than 1,000 ft (300 m) thick.
Initially, the railway track was constructed by gouging artificial grooves on the rock at the top of the waterfall to split the waterfall into two and fall away from the rail route.[4] The tracks were then set up around the inclined rock[5] and this was called the Meangalla (මීන්ගල්ල) pass. However, this railway route was found to be dangerous, especially in the rainy season as heavy rains caused the swollen waterfall and slip rocks to damage the trains and the rail tracks.[6][7]
This resulted in a more robust and safe rerouting via drilling through the solid rock.[8] The Meeyangalla (මීයන්ගල්ල) tunnel, thus constructed and numbered as tunnel 5A, became the sixth tunnel in the Colombo-Kandy railway line and also the second-longest railway tunnel in Sri Lanka at 423 m (1,388 ft) long

Alagalla Mountain Range or “Potato Range” is situated at the boundaries of the Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces in Sri Lanka. It has protected Buddhism and (Sinhala:සිංහල ජාතිය Sinhala Jathiya) culture from the western powerful nations such as the Portuguese, Dutch and English for approximately five centuries as a natural barrier (1505–1948).
Most of the battles against invasions aimed at the Kandyan Kingdom by the western nations from time to time in their ruling period of Maritime Provinces happened at the Alagalla Mountains. Invading foreign armies were defeated by the battles at Balana (View Point) under the reign of Kandyan Kings. Balana fort was the main fortress established to protect the Sinhalese Kingdom from foreign powers, and is situated between Kadugannawa pass and Potato Range. When the English established themselves in Kandy, they started tea and coffee plantations in the area of the Colombo-Kandy railway line, which has cut through tunnels in the mountains.

Alagalla Mountain Range |Hike & Camp|, Poththapitiya (2016) – 18 of 23
Climbing the 1140m high Alagalla Mountain Range aka Potato Mountain Range and spending a night on the top.
There are two paths to the summit. One from Pilimathalawa-Poththapitiya side and the other from Gangoda about 2km before Ihala Kotte. We took the Poththapitiya path to the top and then got down to Gangoda.
The steepness and difficulty is greater from Gangoda and you’d have to time it properly avoiding the rainy season and mid-day.
Special Note for the Viewers:
I’ve done this video to make other human beings aware of the beauty of this place and please don’t misuse this information in order to ruin this place. I’ve spent so much of time/money bringing this to you so that you may enjoy it. However I’ve a very kind and humble request from you all.
Should you ever visit this place, you’re kindly requested to adhere to the following in order to save our Mother Nature (essentially Our Country) not only for the future generations but for the current one as well:
* Avoid careless/reckless/irresponsible/money-oriented/mega tour groups or organizers.
* Travel in smaller groups as Mother Nature can’t afford so many footprints at once.
* Minimize the use of polythene/plastic and do bring back if you have to take any with you.
* Don’t litter and even if it’ bio-degradable, please bring it back and dispose of the garbage properly and responsibly. Because no matter what it is, it will still be alien to that environment.
* Use reusable water bottles so that you don’t have to keep buying plastic ones. It’ll not only save you money but will help save nature massively.
* Remain quiet and vigilant. Don’t disturb the tranquility of the nature. Instead savor it.
* Try and bring if you spot any litter/garbage left behind by other careless travellers.
* Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. The increase usage of firewood leads to more deforestation even at a smaller scale.
* Don’t bring any plants back with you or break any plants/branches unnecessarily.
* Don’t walk off the designated footpath.
* Don’t use soap/detergent/shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they’d only lead to the contamination of those pure water sources and elimination of wildlife species.
* Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.

Hike To Alagalla Mountain Range
Alagalla trek (Potato Range) is one of the intermediate level hiking destinations in Sri Lanka. The mountain has two main entry points, one from Ihala Kotte railway station and other one is from Pilimathalawa via Poththapitiya. Either way is reachable within around 2 hours drive from Colombo.
The Ihala Kotte route might be bit difficult for a beginner since the trek itself is a steep climb from the beginning. But from this year onward (2016), you will get a better aid since the local people put concrete steps in steep areas and made a path since there is a Stupa (Pagoda) built and open for devotees on top of the west ridge of the peak. This is much more similar to the upper part of Adams peak, Haramitipana.
Hiking Hanthana Mountain Range
Hanthana mountain range in the central hills of Sri Lanka close to the hill capital Kandy is a beautiful panoramic mountain range. with the maximum height of 3800ft, Hanthana is a hiker's paradise. 360 degrees of panoramic view allows to see a very large area of the central hills.
However hiking across the entire mountain range is not easy. there are a few difficult parts to tackle. we had walked 10+ km during our hike across the range.
