Alagar Kovil * Madurai

One of Lord Vishnu's 108- Divya desams
Alagar Koil is a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is situated at a distance of 21 km from Madurai, on foot of Alagar hills, amongst the natural beauty of the woods. The Vaishnavite temple is famous for its beautiful sculptures and exquisite 'mandapams'. It is believed that pilgrims visited Azhgar Kovil even in the early days of the Sangam age. According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Vishnu came to this place from his heavenly abode to give away Goddess Meenakshi in marriage to Lord Sundareswarer.

The splendid main tower at the entrance is believed to have been built by the Pandyan Kings. According to the historical background of the place, Malayadhwaja Pandyan, son of Kulasekhara Pandyan, was the earliest known monarch to patronize the temple. Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan beautified the 'vimana' of the shrine with gold plates. After the Pandya rule, the Nayakas patronized the deity.

The main deity of this temple is called Paramaswamy and the processional idol is called Alagar or Sundararajan. The stunning idol is made of pure gold and is an exquisite example of craftsmanship. There is shrine of Kalyana Sundaravalli, the divine consort of Alagar, in the southern enclosure. There is another shrine in the north dedicated to Andal. Other important shrines are of Sudarshanar and Yoga Narasimha.

There is another shrine nearby, dedicated to Karuppannaswamy, the God of Kallars. There are finely carved eighteen steps, which are an object of both worship and amazement by the devotees. It is claimed that nobody dares to tell a lie at this spot. The place is also known for its holy springs called Silamboru and Noopura Gangai. According to local tradition, these springs originated from the anklets of Maha Vishnu during His incarnation as Trivikrama.
The legend
The legend has it that sage Suthapas (Munivar) was bathing in Nupura Gangai at Alagar Hill and did not pay heed to Durvasar Maharishi, who was passing by. The enraged Durvasar cursed Suthapas that he would turn into a frog until he is redeemed of his curse by Lord Sundararajar, who is also known as Kallazhagar.

The Suthapas Maharishi, who is named as 'Mandooga' munivar because of his frog status, performed 'thapas' (prayer) on the banks of river Vaigai, which is otherwise known as Vegavathi, at Thenur. The Lord Kallazhagar comes from his abode in Alagar Hill to redeem Mandooga Maharishi of his curse, when he is praying.

Since days unknown, it is believed that the lord Kallazhagar comes to Thenur via Malaipatti, Alanganallur and Vayalur. In Thenur Mandap, the lord redeems the sage of his curse and leaves for his abode.

During Thirumalai Nayak regime (1623 to 1659 AD), in 1653 the Mandooga Maharishi relieving ritual was shifted to Vandiyur village where the event is performed at Thennur Mandapam, built by Thirumalai Nayak himself.

Koodal Azhagar Temple in Madurai, a city in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to the Hindu godVishnu. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries AD. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Koodal Azhagar and his consort Lakshmi as Mathuravalli.
A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all its shrines. The temple has a five-tiered rajagopuram, the gatweay tower. The temple is originally believed to be built by the Pandyas, with later additions by the Vijayanagar and Madurai Nayak kings who commissioned pillared halls and major shrines of the temple during the 16th century.
Koodal Azhagar is believed to have appeared to slay the demon Somuka who abducted the four Vedas. The temple follows Thenkalai tradition of worship. Four daily rituals and three yearly festivals are held at the temple, of which the fourteen-day annual Brahmotsavam during the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May - June) being the most prominent. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu
As per Hindu legend, a ruler named Vallabhadeva went incognito everyday to know about the lives of people under him. During one of his visits, a scholar told him that the ultimate goal in life is to collect provisions in summer and save for winter, which also meant that one should work during his younger days and save for his old age. Vallabadeva was not convinced and he set this as a competition among scholars to make him realize the true value of life. Vishnucitta, who would later go on to become Periazhwar, one of the twelve most revered saints of Vaishnava sect, came to Madurai from Srivilliputhur. He was believed to have been directed by the heavenly words of Vishnu and he expouned the sacred verses. He explained the concepts of Hitham and Purushartham from Vedas and proclaimed that attained the feet of Narayana could lead to salvation. Vallabhadeva was pleased with the explanation and he awarded a bag of gold to Visnucitta. It is believed that the current gopuram of Srivilliputhur Temple, was built by Periazhwar with the gold won.

Alagar Kovil ~ A Review - 3 Tier Pilgrim Centre *

Alagar Kovil - This is one of the 108 Divya Desams of lord Vishnu, situated within the reach of 24 K.m from Madurai.It has got three tier structure of pilgrim centres within it, namely Sundaraja Perumal Temple at the base of the hill, Pazhamuthirsolai, the 6th abode of lord muruga at it's top (middle) and the temple of Goddess Sri Raakachi Amman at it's peak. So, if one who visit this place, he would be really fortunate to see all these three pilgrim centres at a time.

When we enter the Perumal temple at the base of the hill, first we worship the god 'Pathinettampadi Karuppu', who has been the guardian deity of Alagar Kovil.

Who is Pathinettampadi Karuppu?

Pathinettampadi Karuppu has been the guardian deity of Alagar Kovil.There has been two legends, regarding Pathinettampadi Karuppu. One among them has been, he was one of lord Rama's children, 'Lav & Kussh', when His consort, Sita had been left in the forest, for what She had been suspected by a dobi of Ayothi,
when he had a conversation with his wife. It had been occasionally, heard by lord Rama, when He was on the move of 'Night city walk'. On that condition, mother Sita had given birth one male child and the other one had been created by the Rishi valmigi (guardian of Sita in forest), When he misunderstood that Lav had
been lost, when Sita asked him to look after her child, when Sita went for a work in forest.

When having tested His real son, lord Rama asked both of His children to cross over the fire. Amidst the fire, one child's body turned as black and another one crossed that fire, without any harm.But lord Rama had accepted that black child also as His son, since He knew all, what had happened in the forest. That child,
would have been later named as Karuppu and took in charge of guardian of Alagar Kovil. The another legend told that Pathinettampadi Karuppu was none other than a divine magician,who accompanied with 18 thiefs,who were engaged for the attempt to steel the processional deity, Alagar to 'Malabar' (Kerala) by the king.In that attempt,all of them had been killed and the magician's final wish had been as guardian of Alagar Kovil.

At it's peak, Goddess Sri Raakachi Amman temple is there, where the holy
stream (rivulet) called as 'Silambaru' or otherwise called as 'Nubura Gangai' has been originating under Her flower feet.This water has been used as abishega water for the deities of Alagar Kovil.This Silambaru also has it's legend that
when lord Vishnu took the incarnation of 'Vamana' or also called as 'Thrivikrama', His upper leg had entered the 'Sathyaloga' (Brahmah's world).So Brahmah poured the water from His Kamandalam onto the foot of Lord Vishnu.

When Brahmah poured the water on the upper foot of lord Vishnu, the water which washed the anklet of lord Vishnu had dropped as the holy water called as Silambaru' or 'Nubura Gangai', on the earth.In Tamil, Silambu means 'Anklet'. So only, it's been called as Silambaru.

Madhanagopala Swamy Temple * Madurai ~

This temple has been well situated in the heart of the town where south masi street and West masi street meets together. It's a lovely lord Vishnu temple facing towards the east in direction. Around this temple, you could able to find the Madurai's busy market of various trades.

Madurai has a unique feature of having a pile of same traders at a particular place. For instance, North veli street is known for automobile market. On both sides of this street, you could find a lot of shops handling wholesale, retail and both.

Like this, South Avani moola street is known for bullion market where as East avani moola street deals with stationery and paper items. All chithirai veethis (street) has been the main markets for textiles.

North masi street is famous for it's hardware shops while town hall has been occupied with hotels and lodges. Why i have been telling all these things to you is, like this, Madurai, the whole city has been the blessed with a lot of historical temples like Meenakshi Amman temple, Koodal Alagar temple, Immaiyil nanmai tharuvar temple, Madhanagopala swamy temple, North and south Krishnan temples, Thiruparamkundram temple, Alagarkovil, Palamuthirsolai and Vandiyur Mariamman Theppakulam so on. Apart from these temples there are a lot of well known churches and Dhargahs (Mosques) in the city.

Again a good news for the pilgrims is that the Koodal Alagar temple and the Immaiyil nanmai tharuvaar temple have been situating very close to this temple. So it's very easy to worship the three famous temples altogether in a single visit to Madurai.

The Presiding deities - Lord Madhanagopalan * and Goddess Sri Mathuravalli thaayaar *
They are two main shrines, one for lord Madhanagopalan and the other for Goddess Sri Madhana Mathuravalli thaayar. Here the presiding deity Venugopalan is in standing posture having conch,chakra in His two hands appears as lord Vishnu and flute in other two hands with the blissful appearance as lord Krishna. Near by him, goddesses Rukmani and Sathyabama are there in the main shrine.

This temple had been built on before the seventh century. There are a lot of scenes of Ramayana portraits painted on the walls of this temple.

An unique ritual of applying the paste of 'Maruthani leaves' (henna leaves) on the feet of Mathuravalli thayaar has been here in custom in order to get fulfilled our desire on every Thursday in a week. The devotees could do this ritual of applying 'Henna paste' on Her holy feet for a particular number of weeks (say 9 weeks), so that She could fulfill our desires.

Madurai's central bus stand (Periyaar bus stand) is very near, just we can have gentle walk to this temple. You should reach before 11 A.M., since the temple would have been closed at 12 P.M. and then it would be again opened at 4 P.M.

Again the Tamil month of 'Marghazhi' (Dec-Jan) has been the spiritual month of all the temples in Tami Nadu, particularly the temples of lord Vishnu.

Azhagar Kovil - MADURAI

Alagar koyil is a village in Madurai district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. About 21 Kms North East of Madurai, stands a celebrated Vishnu Temple dedicated to Lord Alagar. The temple is situated on a hill amidst panoramic surroundings. The shrine is know as Alagarkoil and the hill , Solaimalai. The temple also contain some beautiful carvings and makes the visit rewarding. Palamudirsolai, one of the six abodes of Lord Subramaniya is located atop the Hill. The history and living of the village is centered around Kallazhagar Temple. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries AD. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Kallazhagar and his consort Lakshmi as Thirumamagal. Chithirai festival of this temple celebrated for ten days is one of the declared festivals of Tamilnadu Government. This festival day is declared as Local Holiday. In chithirai, Lord Kallalagar starts from Alagar kovil in the form of Kallar and reaches Madurai on Pournami (Full Moon day). Here he steps into river Vaigai in his Horse Vaganam. Lakhs of devotees flock to river Vaigai to see this event. Ethir Sevai festival is celebrated on the day before Alagar steps into river Vaigai. It is a tradition for the people of Madurai to welcome Alagar.

Immaiyil Nanmai Tharuvaar Temple * Madurai ~

This temple belongs to the Samasthanam(Princely state) of Sivaganga district of Tamilnadu,India.It's well located in West masi street of Madurai,and also near the juncture of west masi and south masi street.The other near by temples are Madhana Gopala swamy temple and Koodal Alagar Perumal temple. It's within the reach of Madurai central bus stand (Periyaar bus stand),not more than1 k.m.

A lot of hotels of economic class and premium class,have been there in Maduraii,mostly resided at West Perumal Maistry street.People who stay in these hotels can easily walk and reach the temple within 15 minutes.
Isthala Puraanam-means -The legend
In ancient times,the supreme God in Hinduism,Lord Shiva had a plan to make birth of His wife sri parvathi Amman in the earth,that is in Madurai,as the daughter of the kingMalaiyatvaja Pandyan, from the holy fire by which the offerings are to be transformed to the gods of heaven.

From the holy fire,a female child appeared with the signs of having three breast,and grew in the name of Thadathagai. As she grew,her skills also grown with.Later,She was known as Sri Meenakshi Amman of Madurai. The king Malaiyatvaja Pandyan had been told that,when Sri Meenakshi found her life-partner,the third breast would have been disappeared.

Sri Meenakshi was very brave enough to fight against all the three world (heaven,earth,hell) and raised her flag of victory all over.When she entered the place of Kailash (which is said to be the place of Lord Shiva),and made victory over the Nandhi (Lord shiva's Vaaganam) and other monster - warriors, Lord Shiva appeared before Her. On seeing Him, She shied and found her third breast disappeared. She prayed lord Shiva to accept as His Life-partner,and welcomed Him to come to Madurai ,and their marriage would have been taken place at Madurai.The Lord also accepted her 'wish of wedding Him',and came to Madurai as Somasundara Pandyan and wedded her.

After the marriage,He himself transformed His Soul as the Athma Lingam (here Athma means soul) and He prayed Himself at Madurai,which had been called once as Naduvoor.The Goddess Sri Meenaksi has been called as Naduvoor Nayagi,since she wedded and prayed the Lord Shiva,here.

The Temple that the Lord Shiva worshiped himself in the form of Athmalingam(the transformation of His Soul into Lingam) is the same,what we seen today in Madurai,as called as Inmayil Nanmai Tharuvaar Temple.So you please calculate the time of origin of the temple,which had been renovated and reconstructed by various kings at various yugas(means time slabs).



The main entrance is like a narrow way since some encroachment has been taken by the shops at west masi street,the government should take necessary steps to make the temple ,clearly seen by the people,taken into account,considering it's time- beyond pride.
At the Left hand side - we can see the Lord Ganesha (also Lord Vinayaka)sitting Majestically
At first we worship Lord Ganesha as He is the Aathi moola Porul,that is it's accustomed in India,to pray Lord Ganesa,when starting a new work.Here the Lord Ganesha is seen as fully white,since He is bathed with the Thiru neer (a holy white powder given in all Indian temples as the prashadam - means gifted by the God.

Lord Kaala Bairavar Shrine
Lord Kaala Bairavar is an another transformation of Lord Shiva,especially taking this Avataar to destroy the evil and wicked demons. You see in the above picture,people standing in the long queue,for what,to pierce the lemon fruit on the Trisoolam of the Lord Kaala Bairavar.
Entering into the Main shrine of Immaiyil Nanmai Tharuvaar
After praying the gods residing at the near by shrines, we entered into the main shrine,there i was sustained to take photographs,since it is the main shrine.The main shrine is called also in tamil Karuvarai,The main shrine's walls are constructed with the curving stones of sculpture on it,having the statues of Lord Brahmma ( He who takes the in charge of creating lives of all creatures),Lord Thatchina moorthy (God of wisdom),at the back,found Lord Lingothpavar.and goddess Sri Durga are seen sculptured on the outer wall. The main Deity Lord Immaiyil Nanmai Tharuvaar is seen in the sitting posture with Goddess Umaiammai,facing towards west direction. Here Isthala Viruksham is Thasthala Vilva tree.

View of the Kallazhakar Kovil Azhakar Malai, Madurai Dec.2012. With songs by TM Soundarajan Pullankuzhal Kodutha. This temple one of the 108th Thivya Thesam. கள்ளழகர் திருக்கோவில். Azhakar Kovil (Thirumaliruncholai or Azhakar temple), is a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu situated 21 km from the city of Madurai, which lies in the Tamil Nadu state of India.
The Main tower entrance (Mukya Gopuram) always remains closed, with the shrine of Karupana Swami. The very closed door itself is worshipped as PatinettAm padi Karuppan(meaning, the black Lord who (sits) at the Eighteen steps ). Only Once in a year, the door is opened and Sudarshana Chakra or Chakrathazhvar as the temple, the famous Vishnu's wheel, passes over through the open door. Not even the Lord's Utsava Murti(deity for processions and festivals) goes through this passage. This is a centuries old practice.

The style of the buildings denote, 3rd or early 4th Century construction.

FESTIVAL OF ARULMIGU KALLALAGAR TEMPLE, ALAGARKOIL

Chithirai festival of this temple celebrated for ten days is one of the declared festivals of Tamilnadu Government. This festival day is declared as Local Holiday. In chithirai, Lord Kallalagar starts from Alagar kovil in the form of Kallar and reaches Madurai on Pournami (Full Moon day). Here he steps into river Vaigai in his Horse Vaganam. Lakhs of devotees flock to river Vaigai to see this event. Ethir Sevai festival is celebrated on the day before Alagar steps into river Vaigai. It is a tradition for the people of Madurai to welcome Alagar.

As Alagar returns from Vandiyur Dhasavatharam festival is celebrated throughout the night at Ramarayar Mandapam in the Northern part of river Vaigai. After this event Alagar is taken to Mysore Veera Mandapam on decorated Anantharayar Palanquin. The next morning Alagar in the form of Kallar returns to Alagar kovil in 'Poo Pallakku'(Palanquin decorated with flowers)

In the month of April and may, each year the great Chitra festival is celebrated on Pournami (full moon day). The Festival dramatically re enacts the visitation of Lord Kallalagar to Madurai from Alagarkoil . Lakhs of devotees flock to river Vaigai to personally witness the event of lord Alagar stepping down into the river and to get his blessings.

During the months of July and August the festival of Aadi Brahmmorchavam is being celebrated for 10 days. This festival occurs within the precincts of the shrine. Devotees from different parts of Tamilnadu throng to participate in this festival. The temple car 'Amaiththa Narayanan’ is taken in procession during Pournami (Full-Moon day) of Aadi (Brahmotchavam).

WHY THIS FESTIVAL IS CELEBRATED

Amongst the many festivals that are conducted here, the Chitra festival is the most important one. During this festival, the processional idol of Alagar is taken to Madurai, halting at various places on the way. This festival attracts thousands of pilgrims and visitors from South India as well as from other parts of the country.A legend is popular how Alagar, the brother of Meenakshi was unable to attend her marriage in time and how he turned back from the banks of the Vaigai river. It is surprising what a strong visible influence this picturesque belief has been left in the environs of Madurai.
அழகர் திருவிழா மொத்தம் ஒன்பது நாட்கள் நடக்கும் அழகர் மதுரைக்குப் புறப்படும் முன்பே திருமலையில் அவருக்குத் திருவிழாக்கள் தொடங்கி விடும் அந்தத் திருவிழாவின் 4 - ஆம் நாள் மதுரைக்குப் புறப்படும் ஒன்பதாம் நாள் மீண்டும் தம் மலைக்குத் திரும்பி விடுவார். அழகர் வைகையாற்றில் தங்கியிருக்கும் படியான மூன்று நாட்களில் இரவும் பகலும் அங்கு சேரும் ஜனக் கூட்டம் கணக்கிட முடியாதது . அங்கே அழகர் அருளுகின்ற பலவிதமான சேவைகளைக் கண்டு களிக்கவே மக்கள் கூட்டம் திரண்டிருக்கும். அப்போது இரவில் வாண வேடிக்கைகளும் , விளையாட்டுக்களும் , ஆரவாரங்களும் அளவற்று நடக்கும். இவற்றியெல்லாம் காண , பல மைல் தூரத்திலுள்ள கிராமங்களிலிருந்து மக்கள் மாட்டு வண்டிகளில் வந்து மூன்று , நான்கு நாட்கள் குடும்பத்துடன் தங்கியிருந்து போவார்கள்.

அழகருக்கு நடக்கும் மற்ற திருவிழாக்களில் முக்கியமானவை வைகாசி வசந்த உற்சவ திருநாள் ( இது வசந்த மண்டபத்தில் 10 நாள் நடக்கும் ) ஆடி பிரமோற்சவம் ( 10 நாள் ) ஐப்பசி தலையருவி உற்சவம் அல்லது தொட்டி உற்சவம் ( 3 நாள் )கார்த்திகை கைசிகம் மார்கழித் திருநாள் , திரு அத்தியயன உற்சவம் இது பகற் பத்து , இராப்பத்து என்று இரண்டு பிரிவுகளாக மொத்தம் 20 நாட்கள் நடைபெறுகிறது. இந்த நாட்களில் நாலாயிர திவ்விய பிரபந்தம் முழுவதும் அத்யா பகர்களால் சேவிக்கப் படுகிறது பகற்பத்தில் இங்கு பெரியாழ்வார் அழகரின் திருவடி சேர்வதாக விழா நடை பெறு வது தனி சிறப்பு வாய்ந்தது மற்ற திவ்விய தேசங்களில் திருமங்கையாழ்வார் திருவடிச் சேருவதாக விழா நடைபெறும். இங்கு பெரியாழ்வார் இறுதிக் காலத்தில் வாழ்ந்து அழகர் திருவடி சேர்ந்ததால் இவ்வாறு விழா அமைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது . மாசி தெப்பம் , பங்குனி திருக் கல்யாணம் முதலியன நடைபெறுகிறது. சித்திரை திருவிழாவிற்கு அடுத்தப்படி பெரிய திருவிழா ஆடிப் பிரமோற்சவமே. இந்த ஒன்பதாம் நாள் பௌர்ணமியன்று திருத் தேர் நடக்கும். இந்தப் பிரமோற்சவதிற்குக் கிருஷ்ண தேவராயர் இரண்டு கிராமங்களை மானியமாகக் கொடுத்தார்.ஸ்ரீ ஆண்டாள் இங்கு கள்ளழகரைக் கல்யாணம் செய்து கொண்டதாக ஐதீகம் உண்டு . ஆகையால் இந்த விழா இங்கு மிகச் சிறப்பாக நடைபெறும் . இத் திருக்கல்யாணம் பங்குனி உத்திரத்தில் நடைபெறும்.

Parimala Ranganathar Perumal Temples or Tiruindaloor is a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, located in Thiruvilandur of Mayiladuthurai, a town in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu revered in Nalayira Divya Prabandham by the 12 poet saints, or Alwars. This temple is along Kaveri and is one of the Pancharanga Kshetrams.
The temple is believed to be of significant antiquity with contributions at different times from Medieval Cholas, Vijayanagar Empire and Madurai Nayaks. The temple is enshrined within a granite wall and the complex contains all the shrines of the temple. The rajagopuram (the main gateway) has five tiers.

Pazhamudhircholai Murugan Temple-Madurai

Pazhamudhircholai Murugan Temple,also named as ‘Solaimalai Murugan Temple’ is located near the city Madurai of Tamilnadu, dedicated to Lord Murugan and also one of the ‘Arupadai Veedu Temples’. Pazhamudhircholai temple is situated atop a hill with dense forest about 19 kilometers from the Temple City Madurai. This hill is also known as Vrishabhadri or Idabagiri. Azhagar Kovil, one among the 108 Divya Desam temples is located very close to the Pazhamudhircholai Murugan Temple.

From the former times, the ‘Vel’ (Weapon of Lord Murugan) has been worshipped as the presiding deity in this temple. Lord Murugan,chief deity of this temple, who is popularly known as Kurinji Nilakkizhavan in this temple, stands majestically, has four hands with Goddess Valli and Goddess Deivayani on both sides. The idol of Lord Ganesh is also present here in a separate shrine. Pazhamudhircholai Murugan Temple is the sixth holy shrine of Lord Murugan among the six abodes dedicated to Lord Murugan, which are named as Arupadai Veedu Temples.


This is the only temple among the six abodes of Lord Murugan, where He blesses His devotees with His consorts Goddess Valli and Goddess Deivayani. There is an idol of Goddess Rakkayi Amman, who is considered as the Guardian deity. The Sthala Theertham (temple tank) of this temple is Noopura Ganga, where the devotees take bath and worship the Guardian deity Goddess Rakkayi Amman. A blackberry tree is considered as a Sthala Vriksha (temple tree) of this temple and the fruit become ripe during the Skanda Sashti festival (October to November).
