Alakai Swamp Trail, Kauai Hawaii
You reach the Alakai Swamp Trail intersection 2 miles from the Pu'u o Kila Lookout. Follow the sign to the left. The Alalai Swamp Trail will continue another 2 miles along the boardwalk. There is a section in the center that contains no boardwalk and you have to cross a stream which you can bolder hop.
The bogs along the flat top sections are very deep. The pools look like they are only inches deep but are several feet deep. I poked my hiking stick in and it continued down in the loose mud until I had to pull it back out. I never found the bottom so I wouldn't recommend getting off the boardwalk. The ferns, moss, and shrubbery are worth the trip.
Hopefully when you arrive at the end of the trail there will be a break in the clouds at the Kilohana Overlook. The Wainiha River and Valley is so lush with numerous waterfalls. On a clear day you get a great ocean view of Hanalei Bay. Plan on sitting on the bench for a good 30 minutes to allow for the fog to roll in and out to get several views of the valley in front of you.
Retrace your steps to the intersection. You can turn left and follow the Pihea trail another several miles down to the Kawaikoi Stream Trail, Sugi Grove Camp, and Kawaikoi Camp. You can then follow the road up to the Alakai Swamp Trail and follow it back up north to the intersection you just left 3 ½ miles ago. For my time and views, there are several much more scenic trails available than this side trip.
From the Pu'u o Kila Lookout to the Kilohana Lookout off the Alakai Swamp Trail is 8 miles round trip and will take you just under 4 hours.
Interesting fact. Around the 4:30 mark you start seeing what appears to be red flowers. They are actually blooms on the Ohia trees. The trees at the start of the trail are 40-60 feet tall. In the swamp they are full grown at 2 feet because of the wet soil!

Alakai Swamp trail
We just came back from Kauai. It was incredibly lush and beautiful. One of our favorite hikes was the Alakai Swamp trail. It rained hard in mid April, so the hike was extra wet and muddy which made it challenging. We spent 6 hours from 10am-4pm to hike 5 miles, taking plenty of breaks to take photos. Thanks for watching!

Kauai Adventures: Hiking The Alaka'i Swamp Trail
The Alaka’i swamp is the largest high elevation swamp in the world. The boardwalks that have been installed through the bog make it possible to traverse what once would have been near impassable terrain. A visit to the swamp is one of the most unique experiences in Kauai and if you’re lucky and the weather cooperates the view from the final lookout point is amazing!

Alakai Swamp Trail, Kauai
The Alakai Swamp Trail takes you into the interior of Kauai, through a tropical rainforest filled with ferns and other greenery. Once you get to the trail from the Pihea Trail, it's an easy hike as most of the trail is on boardwalk. After about a mile you will encounter a four way intersection. Take a left to continue down to a stream and beyond to the Kilohana Lookout where you will find views of Hanalei Bay.

Alakai Swamp Trail in Kauai, Hawaii
A fairly easy but LONG hike in Kokee State Park up Waimea Canyon. A total of 7 miles. For the most part, you are walking on a boardwalk. There's one small stream to pass. Trail might get slippery when raining but it was dry the day we went. Pretty orange flowers along the way with lots of lush greeneries. The lookout at the end gives you a beautiful view of the North Shore. Be sure to wear proper shoes, bring lots of water and snacks. Allow 4-6 hrs for the hike. Enjoy!

ピヘア トレイル ~ アラカイ スワンプ トレイル ( 天空の大湿原を歩く! ):Pihea to Alakai Swanp, Koke'e State Park - Kauai.

Maddie and I hiking the Pihea Trail to the Alaka'i Swamp Trail (and yes, it's a swamp on top of a mountain!) while we see Kalalau Valley on the way to the unbelievable Kilohana Lookout, where you can see the northside of the island (and Hanalei Bay) from the southside of the island!

Pihea Trail Kauai Hawaii
Pihea Trail
Pihea Trail is located at the end of the road at the top of Waimea Canyon past Kokee State Park and by the Pu'u O Kila Lookout. There is a trail sign along with a well faded sign saying - Mt. Waialeale Wettest spot on earth
The Pihea Trail is among the premier hiking paths in the Kokee/Waimea Canyon area. The trail traverses the narrow ridge in the Na Pali Kona Forest Reserve between the Kalalau Valley and the Alakai Swamp. The views extend 4,000 feet down the mossy, fluted cliffs of the Kalalau
Valley, which drops sharply into the ocean. The views inland extend over layers of folded forested canyons and ridges to Mount Waialeale, the wettest spot on earth with an average of 450 inches of annual rainfall.
Alakai Swamp is an incredible, atmospheric area like nowhere else. Swamp weather can cause no views at all and is typical weather.
The trail begins as an old road (An attempt to build a road to Haena).
The trail is quite rutted and it's easy to see why the attempt failed. There are numorous lookout areas to the Kalalau Valley. Along with the elevation changes up and down through a fern lined path, there are many wet muddy areas. Some spots have a wooden walkway in areas that are wet all the time.

Alakai Swamp Hike
An often unseen side of Kauai, this is a solid 6 hour hike beginning at Pihea Trail head at Pu'u O Kila Lookout (the place where you go to see the Kalalau Valley at the top of Waimea Canyon) to the Alakai Swamp Trail (one of the highest swamps in the world), ending in the Kilohana Lookout. Approximately 5 miles, one way. Moderate hike, worst part are the 100 or so sometimes-rotten wooden stairs on the way back. I did not encounter a single human from the intersection of Pihea trail and Alakai Swamp until my walk back. I had the lookout to myself for a full half hour.
The boardwalks at the end are narrow and if there's any traffic you have to do some footwork to allow each other to pass.

Hiking Kauai | Kalepa Ridge Trail
Wild and Growing is on Kauai for the winter and we are doing some rad hikes! In this video, we traversed the Kalepa Ridge Trail in Koke'e State Park. It features some stunning views of the Na Pali coast and of the Kalalau Valley. The hike is challenging but short and best done when there has been little rain.
Hikers featured are Hannah Plourde of Wild and Growing and Cinzia Bruno.
