Alamut (Persian: الموت, meaning eagle's nest) was a mountain fortress located in Alamut region in the South Caspian province of Daylam near the Rudbar region in Persia (Iran), approximately 100 km (60 mi) from present-day Tehran.

Day 16 - Alamut valley & Qazvin
16 July - After arriving in Qazvin late at night the day before, we went on a day trip with Daryll and Lynn, an Australian couple that we kept seeing everywhere we went in Iran :) In the Alamut Valley, we visited the canyon and made our way up to the legendary Castle of the Assassins. After a long day, we had dinner in Qazvin's beautifully renovated bazaar, camel statue included.

Alamut is the name of a valley in north of Iran on Alborz Mountain Ranges mostly known as the Valley of the Assassins.
Hasan-i-Sabah succeeded to establish the most dreadful movement by an Islamic Shiite sect named Ismailis.
Starting at 11th century, the Assassins which were under the effect of hashish and were assassinating only the key roles and important authorities of the local government and of the Mongolians could last for about 185 years and finally were finished by the grandson of Gengiz Khan named Holakoo Khan on 13th century.
Alamut Valley has an amazing and unique nature in it as well. The rock material and strange formation of the mountains and the canyons will remain in the mind of the tourists!
Rural life and the Agriculture of northern Iran will also be seen during the visit to the valley.

테헤란에서 북서쪽으로 100km 남 카스피안 주의 산속, 절벽으로 싸인 산정상에 있는 이 요새는 독수리 둥지라는 뜻으로 1090년부터 1256년 몽골 족에 의해 파괴 될 때까지 Hassan Sabbah가 이끄는 중세 Nizari Ismaili(시아 무슬림) 거주지 이며 수니 무슬림 Saljuq 정부의 반항의 거점이었다.
1256년 몽골 족에 점령된 후 이곳에 있던 도서관이 파괴되면서 많은 장서가 유실 되어 그 시대의 역사와 Ismaili의 사상의 기록이 사라졌다. 그 후 폐허로 남아 있다가 이곳의 역사적 중요성이 인정되어 이란정부에 의해 개발, 보존되고 있다.
원래 알라무트는 Justanid 시대의 영주 Vahsudan이 이 근처에서 사냥을 하다 절벽 꼭대기에 독수리 둥지가 있는 것을 보고 이곳의 전략적 중요성을 인식하고 요새를 짓게 되었다.
그 후 이란 북부와 동부에 퍼져 살던 이집트에서 추방되어 온 Ismailis (시아 무슬림)이 Saljuq(수니 무슬림) 왕조의 정책과 혹독한 과세에 반감을 갖고 이곳 숨어 저항운동을 한 Hassan Sabbah가 이지역을 개발하여 농사를 짓고 이를 숨기기 위한 창고를 Alamut에 짓고 또한, Ismaili의 사상을 저술하는 도서관을 지어 학술활동을 하였다.
전설에 의하면 Assassination의 어원이 아랍어의 Hashishini (대마초)인데 이것은 십자군이 유럽에 전한 것으로 Alamut에서 반대파의 정치적 인사를 제거하기 위해 암살자를 훈련 중에Hashishi를 주었다고 전하여진 것 이라고 한다.
Alamut Castle Part 1(Persian: الموت), Hasan-e Sabbāh (Persian: حسن صباح)
This is a brief report of ongoing excavation, and systematic recovery of the remnants of Alamut Castle filmed in summer 2011. At time of visit we were almost the only visitors (along with 1 or 2 families), and were lucky enough to have one of the curators (Mr. Kazemi) lecturing us about the history, and the findings of working archaeology crew in the castle.
