Mariehamn, Åland Islands, Finland
The Åland Islands or Åland (Swedish: Åland, Swedish pronunciation: [ˈoːland]; Finnish: Ahvenanmaa) is an autonomous, demilitarised, monolingually Swedish-speaking region of Finland that consists of an archipelago lying at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. Collectively, the islands in the archipelago form the smallest region of Finland, constituting 0.49% of its land area and 0.50% of its population.
Åland comprises Fasta Åland (Main Island, on which 90% of the population resides)[5] and a further 6,500 skerries and islands to its east. Fasta Åland is separated from the coast of Sweden by 38 kilometres (24 mi) of open water to the west. In the east, the Åland archipelago is contiguous with the Finnish Archipelago Sea. Åland's only land border is located on the uninhabited skerry of Märket,[6] which it shares with Sweden.
Åland's autonomous status means that those provincial powers normally exercised by representatives of the central Finnish government are largely exercised by its own government.
Mariehamn (Finnish: Maarianhamina) is the capital of Åland, an autonomous territory under Finnish sovereignty. Mariehamn is the seat of the Government and Parliament of Åland, and 40% of the population of Åland live in the city. Like all of Åland, Mariehamn is unilingually Swedish-speaking and around 88% of the inhabitants speak it as their native language.[3]
The town was named after Maria Alexandrovna, the Empress consort of Alexander II of Russia. Mariehamn was founded in 1861, around the village of Övernäs, in what was at the time part of the municipality of Jomala. The city has since expanded and incorporated more of Jomala territory. The city is located on a peninsula, and has two important harbours, one located on the western shore and one on the eastern shore. The Western Harbour is an important international harbour with daily traffic to Sweden and mainland Finland. A powerful incentive for Baltic ferries to stop at Mariehamn is that, with respect to indirect taxation, Åland is not part of the EU customs zone and so duty-free goods can be sold aboard. Mariehamn Airport is located in the neighbouring municipality of Jomala, some 3 kilometres (2 mi) north-west of Mariehamn city centre.
Åland and Mariehamn have a reputable heritage in shipping. The Flying P-Liner Pommern museum ship is anchored in the Western Harbour. The Eastern Harbour features one of the largest marinas in Scandinavia. The famous Dutch steamer Jan Nieveen (now called F.P. von Knorring, after Åland teacher and vicar Frans Peter von Knorring) can also be found here.
The city is an important centre for Åland media; both of the local newspapers (Ålandstidningen and Nya Åland), several radio stations and the local TV channels (TV Åland and Åland24) operate out of the city.
Mariehamn features several buildings drawn by Finnish architect Lars Sonck, who moved to Åland as a child. Buildings drawn by him include the church of Mariehamn (1927), the main building of the Åland Maritime College (1927) and the town hall (1939). Hilda Hongell has also designed several buildings, although only a few are still standing.
Aland Maritime Museum & Pommern
The Åland Maritime Museum (Swedish: Ålands sjöfartsmuseum) is a museum in Mariehamn in the Åland Islands, Finland. It is located in the western part of the town on the sea on Hamangtan, about 1 km at the other end of Storangatan. Along with Ålands Museum it is the most important museum in the islands and a monument to the past glory of Alanland's claim as the holder the world's largest fleet of wooden sailing ships in the past (Text source Wikipedia).

Boatbuilding and crafts are on show in Sjökvarteret, the maritime quarter along Mariehamns eastern harbor. Kastelholm Castle, northeast of Mariehamn, dates back to the 14th century. Farther east are the ruins of Bomarsund, a Russian fortress destroyed in the Crimean War. Ferries from Grisslehamn, Sweden, land at Berghamn port on Eckerö Island, west of Fasta Åland. To the southeast, remote Kökar Island has the remains of a medieval Franciscan monastery. [wikipedia // Google]

Exploring Mariehamn in the Åland Islands on Sailing Vessel Arcturus
| Season 3 | Episode 42
Welcome to Season 3 of my channel!
On this episode I explore the City of Mariehamn.
I got a close as I could to the windjammer POMMERN and tried to imagine around rounding Cape Horn over and over in her years of service as a merchant vessel taking part in the great grain races.
Later I found my way to the Åland Maritime Museum and was amazed at how extensive and beautiful this museum is. You can walk through the original Captains saloon taken from the doomed ship Herzogin Cecilie as she was slowly sinking off the coast of devon. I was also mesmerized by their authentic pirate flag dating to the 18th century, one of only two original skull & crossbones pirate flags still in existence in the world.
Making my back to Arcturus I find Neil has been on Anchor Watch all morning as the winds picked up and threatened to break our mooring line, eventually we made a plan and moved the boat down to a safer slip.
This season will follow my time on board SV Arcturus as we explore the Åland Islands and beyond. We sail into cities, tie up on small islands, anchor bows to and ride out a blow before heading back to Sweden. I hope you will follow along with us on the trip.

Kastelholm in white
This is the outdoor museum area of Kastelholm in the municipality of Sund in the Island group of the Åland islands.
Kastelholm Castle (Swedish: Kastelholms slott) is a Swedish-built medieval castle located off Road 2 in Sund, Åland, Finland, approximately 25 kilometres (16 mi) northeast of Mariehamn, overlooking a fjord to the south of the village of Kastelholm.Along with Hämeenlinna, Olavinlinna in Savonlinna, Raasepori, and Turku, Kastelholm is one of only five surviving Finnish medieval fortresses that are also considered to be architecturally substantial. Built in the 14th century, and held in fief during the Middle Ages by various nobles, feudal chiefs, and kings, it had significant period in the 15th and 16th centuries.
It's a very calm area in connection with a couple restaurants and right next to the golf club Ålands Golfklub (ÅGK) which is one of the finest golf courses in scandinavia.
The video was captured with a Yuneec Typhoon H Professional and edited in Premiere pro. The music is from the youtube open library.

Under åländsk flagg [redigera]

Eckerö Kirkko|church - Ilhas Aland (Suomi)-Finland
Evankelis-luterilainen kirkko
Like the other Åland churches, Eckerö church is built of Åland red rapakivi granite. It lacks a visible outer socle. The nave is comparatively low and small, with an outsized west tower, built as a direct continuation of the north and south walls of the nave. The main entry to the west is in the middle axis of the tower. A high pyramidal hood crowns the relatively low tower. Both the hood and the upper part of the tower are covered by tarred shingles. The eastern façade of the nave shows archaic features, like high and pointed granite slabs put up along ground level, and the form of the walled-in remnants of the outermost roof truss in the eastern gable. The chancel window facing east is nowadays a walled-up blind window. The other exteriors have big window openings facing north and south. Vertical joints of the wall show that the tower was built later, and that it is resting on the west gable of the nave. Also the porch towards the south, with a shallow niche in the eastern wall, is later than the nave.
