Fairbanks, Alaska’s Northern Lights
Northern Lights photographer Frank Stelges shares his passion for capturing the aurora in Fairbanks, Alaska by teaching visitors about the beauty of the phenomenon. It's something that hits us on a deeper level; it opens people up — they become emotional, and they talk about their lives. It's a great thing when people start feeling like they can share these things. Frank describes the beauty of the nights sky in Alaska and the connect he makes with visitors to his part of the country.

Alaska: Chena Hot Springs
Chena Hot Springs is a hot spring, resort, and unincorporated community in the Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska, 56.5 miles northeast of Fairbanks near the Chena River State Recreation Area. The resort makes use of the first low-temperature binary geothermal power plant built in Alaska, and is working on several alternative energy projects, including production and use of hydrogen and vegetable oil for fuel. The resort is conducting collaborative experiments in greenhouse production of vegetables with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station.
Chena Hot Springs was founded over 100 years ago by two gold mining brothers, Robert and Thomas Swan. In 1905, Robert Swan was suffering from rheumatism and needed a place to calm his pain and be comfortable. The two brothers set out to find the hot springs. It took them a little over a month to reach the hot springs after searching for it in Interior Alaska’s harsh landscape. In 1911, twelve small cabins were built to accommodate visitors. The twelve cabins developed, and they became one of the most famous resorts in the interior of Alaska. Chena Hot Springs became so famous that the United States Department of Agriculture sent chemists to analyze the water. The characteristics of the water are very different from other American hot springs.
The coordinates for Chena Hot Springs Alaska are 65'03 N and 146'03 W (65.05, -146.05). The average yearly temperature for the area is −4.9 °C (23.2 °F), with the highest temperature being in July at 20.4 °C (68.7 °F) and the lowest temperature being in January at −31.2 °C (−24.2 °F). Annually the average amount of precipitation is 357 millimetres (14.1 in). The average snowfall amount in Chena Hot Springs is 161.8 centimetres (63.7 in) annually.
Chena Hot Springs has visibility of the Aurora borealis, especially around the March equinox.
Chena Hot Springs Resort uses two 200kW Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) geothermal energy power plants to generate energy, the first in Alaska. The resort moved the diesel generators used in the past to a backup role since July 2006, and it is successful in reducing the cost from 30 cents/kWh to 5 cents/kWh. The resort owners have future plans in increasing the work output of the powerplant from 200 kW to 1MW. An increase to 730 kilowatts was accomplished.

Fairbanks, Alaska in the winter is freaking amazing and should be on every travelers bucket list.
We spent a week up there in March: enjoying the snow, chasing the northern lights, dog sledding, going to sled dog races, sipping cocktails with glasses made of ice in the ice museum, visiting the sculpture festival, and SO MUCH MORE.
Check out Fairbanks, Alaska... In the winter! It's one of the most incredible places I've ever been.

Fairbanks | Alaska | A Winter Adventure
8 days with a rental car exploring the Fairbanks area. Our trip was March 23rd-30th 2019. Some places visited: Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, dog sledding with Black Spruce Dog Sledding, Running Reindeer Ranch, Aurora Ice Museum, Museum of the North, Pioneer Park, Tanana Valley Railroad Museum, Pioneer Air Museum, Denali National Park (we could only go the first 3 miles into the park, as the road is closed in the winter season, we did not see Mt Denali), Silver Gulch Brewery- the Northern most brewery in North America, Creamer's Field, Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitor's Center, we rented snowshoes from Alaska Element, Santa Claus House in North Pole, the world's largest Santa statue, Fairbanks Community Museum, Chena Hot Springs (we opted to not get in as it was very crowded), Ice Alaska - world's ice carving championships at Tanana Valley State Fairgrounds- we arrived on the last day it was open so the ice statues were pretty melted, Alaska Pipeline Viewing Point, snowmobiling with Rod's Alaskan Guide Service. Only one night of our trip had a high rating for Aurora activity but it was very cloudy, so we could not see the Northern Lights :( :( It's ok, we got to see them in Iceland!

Alaska Railroad. Alaska Vacation included Fairbanks, North Pole, Denali, Anchorage, Seward
We've always heard how beautiful the train ride was from Fairbanks down is. After a little research, there's 2 levels of travel on Alaska Railroad. Goldstar Service was the best with Glass Dome Cars, Open Air Viewing Platform, Food & Drink included and large comfortable reclining seats. The open air viewing platform are worth the money alone. We saw 4 Moose, a Bear, Nesting Osprey, & a Bald Eagle. The cheap seats are roughly 60-65 percent cheaper, but not nearly as enjoyable. It cost $500 a person from Fairbanks down to Anchorage. We stopped in Denali for a couple days & hoped back on to Anchorage. Spent a couple days in Anchorage and drove down to Seward which is roughly 3 hours depending on how many photo stops. We also took one of the tours on Resurrection Bay. It was a bit chilly, but each stop was beautiful. Highlights included, a Humpback Whale, Puffins, Stellar Sea Lions and Bald Eagles. The scenery isn't bad either. Unfortunately no Orca's or groups of Humpbacks. If you can, take Alaska Railroads Goldstar Service from Denali to Talkeetna. In our humble opinion, that's the prettiest route.

OUR STORY SO FAR:
We are Cory & Kristen Williams and in August 2014 we made the long drive from Southern California to Alaska to move into our new home in Eagle River. Here we’ve had the chance to explore Alaska, experience lots of wild events, meet lots of great people and endure the extreme temperatures that the north is known for. On December 20th, 2014 we got engaged after our Polar Plunge under the Northern Lights then later married by our favorite lake on May 23rd, 2015. Then on June 23rd, 2016 we had our first child. A baby girl named Chell.

WHAT DOES DudeLikeHELLA MEAN?:
Dude is me, Cory. I am the dude. Like is a joining word which is used to express similarities and HELLA is slang for a lot or in my case, the greatest amount. So together, DudeLikeHELLA means The best me I can be.

1000 Treks/Adventure-us Alaska Northern Lights Trip. March 2015.
Our amazing trip with our amazing group. We got to see the Aurora seven out of seven nights, and caught one of the biggest Aurora spectacles in sixty years.
As if that wasn't enough, we had the most amazing time dog sledding, riding snow mobiles, snow shoeing, ice fishing and crossing the artic circle. And oh yes, our snowball fights were legendary! :-)
