As of the 2000 census, the population of the city was 862. However, the population doubles in the summer tourist season in order to deal with more than 900,000 visitors. This video begins in downtown Skagway along Broadway Avenue. Here I take a look at the Golden North Hotel and other historic buildings in town. Also in the video is a glimpse of the White Pass & Yukon Railway. A journey I took back in 1994 on my first trip to Alaska, but not today. The video concludes on the Sapphire Princess as we sail away down the Lynn Canal.

Skagway Alaska Train Excursions Are Great When Skagway Weather Isn't Great On Your Alaskan Vacation
Skagway Alaska is an authentic Gold Rush boomtown frozen in time. Today Skagway Is perhaps best known for the Skagway Train or White Pass & Yukon Route. During the height of the gold rush more than 1,000 people per week poured into Skagway, most of which had no idea the difficulty of getting to the gold fields. When the Skagway train route through the mountains was finished it was considered one of the manmade wonders of the world and made a trip through the mountain pass a breeze.
Skagway was a lawless and wild west town far worse than in any Hollywood movie. Gunfights, robberies, and brawls were commonplace. Brothels sprang up everywhere and while technically prostitution wasn't legal the houses operated pretty much openly. You could recognize an establishment by the red lanterns or flowers in the window and the women who worked there would take a little dog with them on walks to drum up business and to tip off would be clients that they were available.
When planning an Alaskan Cruise you may want to choose one that visits Skagway. Of all the ports in southeast Alaska, Skagway is a true favorite and really should be on your must-see list. The Skagway Train or White Pass And Yukon train is a bit pricy but it is worth the ride.
Skagway weather is very unusual because it is int he rain shadow of the coastal mountains which means Skagway weather is much dryer than Juneau, receiving about half as much rain.

The Red Onion Saloon, in Skagway, Alaska
The Red Onion Saloon originally opened for business in 1898 at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush, and was considered Skagway’s most exclusive bordello at the time. It was built by planks cut by Captain William Moore, the founder of Skagway, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks.
A Seattle saloon man, Peter Lawson, built the Red Onion during the fall of 1898 and opened it as Skagway's largest dance hall and saloon. Upstairs was a brothel, a higher class parlor than the adjacent cribs on Yokohama Row and Paradise Alley.
The Red Onion was moved in 1914
with one horse from Sixth and State Street to
its current Broadway location. Interestingly, the
Onion was dragged around the corner backwards and the front and back of the building had to be removed in order to switch them.
