Alaska Highway (1944) - Classic Documentary
The Alaska Highway (also known as the Alaskan Highway, Alaska-Canadian Highway, or ALCAN Highway) was constructed during World War II for the purpose of connecting the contiguous United States to Alaska across Canada. It begins at the junction with several Canadian highways in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and runs to Delta Junction, Alaska, via Whitehorse, Yukon.
Completed in 1942 at a length of approximately 1,700 miles (2,700 km), as of 2012 it is 1,387 mi (2,232 km) long. The difference in distance is due to constant reconstruction of the highway, which has rerouted and straightened out numerous sections. The highway was opened to the public in 1948. Legendary over many decades for being a rough, challenging drive, the highway is now paved over its entire length. Its component highways are British Columbia Highway 97, Yukon Highway 1 and Alaska Route 2.

Recorded July 17, 2000. The video begins as I leave the city of Fairbanks traveling east on the Richardson Highway. My first stop is Rika's Roadhouse at Big Delta State Historical Park, a gathering place for Alaskan travelers since 1904. My next stop was in Delta Junction where I ate lunch at the Buffalo Diner and visited the signpost marking the true end to the ALCAN Highway. I headed south out of Delta Junction stopping at some scenic views along the way and viewing the Alaska Pipeline. The video ends as I stop for the night at the Caribou Hotel in Glennallen.

The highway was opened to the public in 1948.[1] Legendary over many decades for being a rough, challenging drive, the highway is now paved over its entire length.[2] Its component highways are British Columbia Highway 97, Yukon Highway 1 and Alaska Route 2.
An informal system of historic mileposts developed over the years to denote major stopping points; Delta Junction, at the end of the highway, makes reference to its location at Historic Milepost 1422.[2] It is at this point that the Alaska Highway meets the Richardson Highway, which continues 96 mi (155 km) to the city of Fairbanks. This is often regarded, though unofficially, as the northern portion of the Alaska Highway, with Fairbanks at Historic Milepost 1520.[2] Mileposts on this stretch of highway are measured from Valdez, rather than the Alaska Highway. The Alaska Highway is popularly (but unofficially) considered part of the Pan-American Highway, which extends south (despite its discontinuity in Panama) to Argentina.[3]

Alaska Adventure | Day 49 | Valdez to Delta Junction
The city of Valdez was an amazing place to experience - fishing, wildlife, scenery, and the shops. We visited and experiences everything on our list and were ready to head North.
Heading North on the Richardson Hwy (AK-4) started smooth but quickly became a challenge of the frost heaves. Bottoming out both the trailer hitch and the back of the trailer makes you think of some of the better roller coasters I have ridden.
From huge valleys, the towering rainbow mountains, rapidly flowing stream, to massively wide rivers that barely have a drop of water - the drive is an interesting one.
Our lunch break was excellent - fired up the generator and fryer, Paula was slicing up a potato ever so thinly and I was heating the oil.
After the potato chips, fresh halibut, that we caught in Ninilchik, was sliced up, breaded, ready for a quick swim in the hot oil.
Rainbow mountains came as an awesome surprise resulting in numerous stops to get the best picture.
Camping at Delta Junction State Recreation was oh so peaceful - until the idiot next to us fired up his noisy generator at 10:30 pm (at least he finally shut it down at 11:15).

Gerstle River Alaska
About mid day on day six, of my month long Alaska adventure in September of 2012, I had reached the Gerstle River at milepost 1392 on the Alaska Highway east of Delta Junction. This steel trestle bridge was constructed in 1944 and is dedicated as the Black Veterans Memorial Bridge. There is a very nice little rest area and coffee disposal unit at the SW corner of the bridge. A monstrous wind storm came through this portion of Alaska a few days after I passed through and when I came back this way on September 18, many of the trees at this facility and for hundreds of miles along the Alaska Highway were laid down like toothpicks!

Day 7 since we started traveling on the Alaska Highway (or Alcan Highway).
After crossing the border between Canada and Alaska. We made a few quick stops:
The first one at the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center.
The second one ate the Tok Mainstreet Alaska Visitors Center or Civic Center. The beautiful log building houses also the Tok Chamber of Commerce and the Tok Library.
The third on at Delta Junction Visitor Center and at the End of the Alaska Highway monument.
Delta Junction is the official end of the Alaska Highway. When the pioneer road was built in 1942, it extended approximately 1,480 miles from the railhead at Dawson Creek, in British Columbia, to a junction with the Richardson Highway, 100 miles southeast of Fairbanks. The Richardson Highway --Alaska's first road-- was built by the Alaska Road Commission in 1910; it connected Valdez to Fairbanks. The Richardson Highway between Delta Junction and Fairbanks became an extension of the Alaska Highway in 1942, as construction crews worked south to Tok and the Alaska border, using Fairbanks as the railhead to supply men and equipment.
The fourth one at Santa Claus House, home of the Original Letter from Santa. Authentic North Pole postmark.
And the last stop, at 10:30 pm, at Fairbanks, and there is still light coming from me sky!

Leave everything and wander” is the result of Sara Bertagnolli’s and Luca Sguazzini’s desire to join their own skills and realize a dream: that of traveling, leaving the certainties and securities of everyday life behind.
After university Sara achieved high-level professional goals in the field of management and became the personal assistant to the fashion designer Philipp Plein.
Luca has been traveling a lot since he was a child and the last year he gained notoriety for his participation in the Italian version of “Dancing with the stars”; he has more than 138k followers on Instagram and 50k on Facebook.
They have decided to join forces and to tell a life out of the ordinary on social networks. The plan is to travel through Canada, Alaska and, in a second moment, United States, Messico and South America and to share the trip’s photos and videos on Youtube, Facebook and Instagram, giving to everyone the possibility to experience the “wander-spirit”.
Traveling without temporal or spatial limits will give Sara and Luca the possibility to entangle their story with that of people they will meet on the road and to discover new cultures, visiting also the places which are not famous, the ones which often have the biggest surprises in store.
The start-up budget will be limited in order to demonstrate that – also without great economical resources – everything is possible if you put the work in and involve as many people as possible.

Gracias David.
