RVing to Alaska | Fummins family farmers | Visiting family up in Alaska
Feed the llamas, collect eggs, water the chickens, and clean the rabbit cages….these were things I'd tell the kids on a daily basis before traveling. Fortunately for the younger four kids they didn't have to listen to me nag them every day about doing farm chores. But unfortunately for them, they didn't have much of a chance to live on a farm. We didn't have a large farm, just a small hobby farm. Llamas, chickens, turkeys, peacocks, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas, fish, turtles, frogs, doves and a dozen more animals have lived with us throughout the years, but most of that was before they younger kids were around. These kids are definitely experiencing a different life than their older siblings. So while I do miss gardening and farm life, traveling has been a great experience too.
While traveling through Alaska we stopped to visit an aunt that I hadn't seen since I was the same age as the kids are now. But it's good to know that they will always have happy childhood memories of her just as I did.
We helped her clean out the dog kennels, feed, water and brush the dogs, put together a kennel, put up an electric fence for the horses and clean logs and branches out of the horse pasture. And of course, we got to enjoy our day having some fun with the animals. We got to run around with a baby horse, feed a bearded dragon, and play with the dogs. At the end of the day the kids all got to go for a ride on the four wheeler. Not much could make a boy happier.
It was an enjoyable day and it reminded me how much I enjoy spending time with animals, but also how much work they are. So for now, we'll enjoy our time traveling without any animals, but when we get the chance to work for a day on someone else's farm, we won't turn it down.
