An Unexpected Day in Seward, Alaska
How about a little US history? Seward is named after William H. Seward, President Lincoln's Secretary of State; responsible for negotiating the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. It is often known as Seward's Folly. Right! Bows of gratitude to Seward for his perseverance.
Seward is gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. A big cruise ship port. And has a gazillion activities for adventurers and fabulous wildlife viewing!

WHALE WATCHING IN SEWARD ALASKA
Charles suprised us with an overnight stay in Seward, Alaska, to go on a whale watching trip and to visit the Alaska Sea Life Center. Even if we didn't get to do all of those cool things, the drive alone would have made the trip spectacular. I can't believe we live here! Also, river otters make me cry.

200 Years Old Rockfish Caught In Alaska?
An insurance adjustor from Seattle caught a rockfish outside Juneau, Alaska, last week that weighed 39.08 pounds and believed to be around 200 years old, The Sitka Sentinel reported.
Henry Liebman, the adjustor, told the paper that he was fishing in 900 feet of water at the time and was about 10 miles off the coast of Sitka. Rockfish, the paper said. These fish have been known to live as far down as 4,000 feet.
I knew it was abnormally big (but I) didn't know it was a record until on the way back we looked in the Alaska guide book that was on the boat, Liebman told the paper.
The fish was certified and a sample was sent to a lab in Juneau where the fish's age will be officially determined. Liebman, for his part, plans having the fish mounted. If this fish was indeed born 200 year ago, it would have been born around the same time the U.S. entered the War of 1812, James Madison was president and the German composer Richard Wagner was born.
Troy Tidingco, the Sitka area manager from the state Department of Fish and Game, told the paper that the previous record fish was 205 years old and that fish was quite a bit smaller than the one Liebman caught, the paper reported.
Rockfish have a high release mortality because they are caught in such deep waters. They often suffer from an inflated swim bladder after reaching the boat.

Alaska Brown Bear Encounter, Snitka 2010
This video is of a Brown Bear encounter while guiding the Snitka Group freshwater fishing on Capo Creek in SW (some where) Alaska!
Captain Rob knows this bear from previous encounters over the years. It's a female at least 6 years old, and more than 700+ lbs. She's putting on more weight by the day for the winters hibernation and will likely bear cubs next spring. She's been an awesome mother bear raising several cubs in the past. This day, she happened to come out to the river seconds behind the group as they made one last stop to catch fish before returning to the big boat for dinner. Not all bear encounters are this manageable....in fact, every encounter is different as much as the individual bears personality and the way humans decide to interact or over react. I had pepper spray magnum and a 454 Casull pistol fully loaded and ready just in case. Not every one venturing into wilderness is that prepared....and they very well should be!!!
