Top 6 Best Things to Do in Juneau, Alaska by Danny Hauger Travel Podcasts
Our 6 favorite things to do on your vacation to Juneau, Alaska! Recording in July of 2017 by Danny Hauger Travel Podcasts. Watch our extensive discussion, photos, and video on our favorite places in Juneau:
-Whale watching & Mendenhall Glacier
-Mt. Roberts Tramway and Hiking
-Tracy Arm
-Gold Creek Salmon Bake
-Alaska Zipline Adventures
-Alaska State Museum
For more than a year, I have had visions of pristine glaciers, whale flukes breaking through the surface of water, and forested areas that refresh the spirit and the body. Finally in the summer of 2017, I was able to plan my travel to Juneau Alaska. Join me on my visit to the last great frontier in Alaska’s capital city.
We found Alaska to be full of friendly faces beginning on the flight from Seattle. Sitting beside us on the plane was a fellow traveler from Michigan who was visiting his daughter. We talked through the flight about travel, life in Alaska, and families. Nearing the end of the flight, he offered us a ride to check into our hotel, The Westmark Barinoff.
Staying at an historic hotel in a prime location has its perks. A beautiful lobby and friendly staff checked us into a spacious room with a full kitchen and walk-in closet. Minutes of walking to many restaurants, and all of the top hubs for travel within Juneau. We highly recommend the Westmark Barinoff for your next stay. Save money from cab rides and stay downtown in the heart of lively Juneau. You’ll feel welcome from the time you are greeted by the concierge and check-in staff.
When It comes to day one, a city tour is always something that I recommend. We jumped on board a bus tour with some local experts at Juneau tours and Whale Watch. We met up at the Mt. Roberts tram way with our fun loving guides and prepared to depart for the day. Sandy and Brandon were excellent, fun, and informative tour guides for whale watching. They got us out to open water quickly so we could spend the most time possible enjoying the sights and sounds of whale watching.
Within a few minutes, we were stunned by the flukes of a large female humpback whale, Flame. We were fortunate enough to track the 15 minute breaths for an hour or so, and see 2-3 more whales. Every 5-10 minutes, someone on board would excitedly see a spout, shout it out, or see a blow, let us know. It felt like each member of the tour was an active part of the experience making the sightseeing more rewarding for everyone involved.
We had a serene and peaceful experience whale watching today and taking a tour of the Mendenhall glacier. We learned that the ice appearing blue is newly surfaced, tightly packed, reflecting blue light and absorbing all other wavelengths. The rush of a nearby waterfall is a great ambiance to pondering the past, present, and future of the glacier itself. There was a lot to do and see. Very convenient pick-up points, and lots of informative stories about the history of Juneau.

After the museum and Tracy’s, we enjoyed a special Salmon Bake with Gold Creek. They delivered us to an oasis of salmon jumping upstream to a beautiful waterfall, scalloped potatoes, rice pilaf, and all-you-can-eat salmon on the grill! What more can you ask for?

Alaska 2019 Highlights - Disney Cruise Line
Greetings from the Disney Wonder in Alaska!
We've just recently disembarked from a 7-night Alaskan cruise (embarked on June 10th) with the Disney Wonder and it was probably one our best cruises yet! The breathtaking views, the world class entertainment, the exquisite foods, and all of the magic that comes with a Disney Cruise is nothing short of spectacular. Disney far exceeds expectations when it comes to cruises and whether it is your first time or many, there is always something amazing to experience here. A huge thank you to Jolene and Kristy for inviting my family to sail with them!
What you just saw was pretty much roughly eight days worth of content compressed into a few minutes! We were actually pretty nervous because the weather reports were 90% chance of rain, but in the end it wasn’t too bad and got plenty of sunlight! Please check out my IG at if you haven't yet for more photos/videos!
Please like, comment and share! ????
Cruise Itinerary:
Day 1 - Vancouver
Day 2 - At Sea
Day 3 - Dawes Glacier
Day 4 - Skagway
Day 5 - Juneau
Day 6 - Ketchikan
Day 7 - At Sea
Day 8 - Vancouver
Cruise Tips
- If unsure about getting nauseous at sea, pack non-drowsy Dramamine. Usually won't feel any swaying unless the ship is cruising faster than 12+ knots. DCL ships have state of the art stabilizers to minimize it's roll axis when its at sea.
- Highly recommend packing windbreakers, thermals, and/or raincoats. Pretty much having a weatherproof jacket suffices.
- Pack a travel bottle (aka Yeti/Hydroflask) or similar to fill up with beverages from the quick service on Deck 9 (remember to use a clean cup to fill the bottles for Public Health compliance).
- Don't over-pack clothing: There are 24-hour self- service laundry machines (washer and dryer) available. Pack for four days = more room for goodies!
- Get to know your dinner team and stateroom host! They will be assigned to your for the duration of your cruise.
- Bring cash with you for tipping tour guides in Alaska.
Dawes Glacier Tips
- Deck 4 Starboard (or Deck 10 Forward) for the best view for approach to the glacier then the ship will rotate so that everyone on Port side can also see.
- Have binoculars ready to search for whales diving or seals hanging out on icebergs.
Skagway Tips
- If there's an option, bus ride up to Canada border and take the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad down back to town (and sit on the right side of the train for best view).
- You might spot bigfoot along the way.
- We booked through Chilkoot Charters & Tours for this excursion.
Juneau Tips
- Though amazing to see in action, the tramway being $35 was not worth the price.
- When at the Mendenhall Glacier, take the Nugget Falls hike to get a closer look. It was about 15 minutes of a walk each way with slight elevations.
- We booked our excursions with Juneau Whale Watch! Shoutout to Captain Kevin and Guide Marina for the once in a lifetime experience and knowledge of the sea creatures. Not only were we able to see a baby whale breach, the glass-like waters in the middle of the channel was an amazing sight.
Ketchikan Tips
- The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. YO-HO! Arrive 15-30 minutes before doors open (15 minutes to showtime). The performances run rain or shine throughout the day.
- Visit the Creek Street down the street from the docks! Cute little stores and coffee shops that ends at a Salmon ladder.
Shoutout to the castmembers making dreams come true on the Disney Wonder:
Captain Daniele Ashero
Cruise Director Natalie Bailey
Cruise Staff: Caitlyn, Natasha, Karis, Darrel, Ronnie, Bailey, Alex the DJ (and many more, ya'll are AMAZING!)
Entertainment Hosts: Sean, Nate (and the broadway cast + Shawn Farquhar)
Dining Team: Ramon and Henry (Table 11)
Stateroom Hostess: Charmaine

Rainforest Sanctuary & Lumberjack Show
Start Start your adventure with a stop at the Great Alaska Lumberjack Show. Here, hardy lumberjacks bring to life Alaska's colorful forest history with an action packed competition in the partially covered and heated outdoor arena. Cheer on your team of World Champion lumberjacks in events such as chopping, sawing, tree climbing and much more. Next, board your coach and enjoy a narrated scenic drive to rustic Herring Cove. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by a naturalist who will guide you along improved trails into the dense forest, for a chance to see wildlife in their natural habitat. The sanctuary borders the Tongass National Forest. Stroll through tall stands of hemlock, spruce and Alaska cedar, stopping at viewing areas to photograph this natural wonderland. See old-growth trees and a multitude of plants in this lush rainforest. The forest trail leads to an elevated boardwalk overlooking Eagle Creek where, during spawning season, salmon runs attract eagles, bears, seals and shorebirds. Bears and seals feed on the salmon while eagles and other birds wait for the scraps. Mink, marten and wolves also frequent the area. Seasonal changes in the ecosystem result in varying levels of animal sightings. Watch and listen to nature's symphony in this spectacular setting. Next, meet and feed Alaska reindeer and take pictures with these gentle creatures. Watch a master Native carver at work on totem poles, walk through the historic Herring Bay Lumber Company sawmill, and photograph bald eagles up close at the Alaska Wildlife Foundation exhibit. Browse through the General Store and enjoy a snack at the end of the hike before returning to your cruise ship pier. Note: Wheelchair access may be limited for details, please consult your Shore Excursion staff before booking. Wear comfortable walking shoes and warm clothing. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed and are more frequent in midsummer. Please note that there may be a short wait prior to the Lumberjack Show. Time can be spent on your own or in the rustic company store located at the Lumberjack Show. Tour may operate in reverse.

Ketchikan - Halibut Fishing
LEARN MORE:
SUBSCRIBE:
This is the experience many anglers dream of when planning an Alaskan vacation, fishing for the largest flatfish in the world, the Pacific Halibut. Imagine catching your first wild halibut with your friends or family and the bragging rights that will come with sharing this delectable fish back home. Unlike many other Alaska destinations, Ketchikan fishing is in protected waters, a short ride from the marina. No matter your skill level, you'll fish like a local, with a Penn rod and Penn 114 reel in your own two hands, working the sandy flats, drifting with the current, jigging in waters as deep as 300 feet. Spend the day with an experienced Alaskan guide, in pursuit of the elusive halibut, learning the secrets of fishing circle hooks, working the tides and battling your leviathan. You can choose to custom process your halibut, as well as purchase a selection of local Alaskan seafood to include with the shipment of your bounty home. Note: Participants must be at least 5 years of age, weigh a minimum of 30 lbs and a maximum of 300 lbs. Deck or rubber soled shoes must be worn on board. We recommend that you wear warm, layered clothing. Rain gear, rubber boots, comfortable float jackets, wool socks, hat and gloves. Halibut fishing equipment and tackle are provided. Actual fishing duration is 4 1/2 hours. Alaska State Law requires a fishing license that can be purchased in cash at the outfitting room for $20. You'll need a credit card in order to have your catch processed and sent home (U.S. only). Fish cannot be stored on board the ship.
