How do we afford to travel so often? We're lucky enough to stay for almost free in every city, using
Albaicín - the old Moorish quarter of Granada. Full of winding alleys, cobbled paths and views from the various Miradors (or viewpoints) across the whole of Granada.
Starting with a climb up to the Mirador de San Cristóbal, we make our way to the vibrant Plaza Larga, full of cafes and restaurants.
We exit the Plaza through the majestic arch known as Arco de las Pesas and head downhill on Placeta de las Minas.

Exploring the Albayzin, Granada, Spain
The Albayzin is a network of tiny streets overlooking the Alhambra. It's the historic Muslim quarter and maintains much of the atmosphere. Many of the hostels are here including Makuto and Oasis. Amazing food and easy access to all of the Granada attractions.

Albaicín is one of the most picturesque areas in Granada and is famous for both its history as well as its numerous beautifully decorated buildings. In the 7th century B.C., first the Iberians and then the Romans and Visigoths settled here in the spacious hill area above the River Darro. However, it was only under the rule of the Moors, when Granada became an independent Islamic kingdom, that the region began to flourish.Even today the splendour of the former Islamic monarchy is highlighted by the world famous and legendary Alhambra Palace. Due to a peace treaty with the Christians’military leaders, Mohammed The First had the impressive castle built. Over the years the Alhambra was extended and its architecture was embellished by its royal inhabitants until the town finally fell to the Catholic Kings. In Albaicín the glorious atmosphere of old Granada can still be felt amid its buildings, its lanes and even in the air. For the architectural legacy of the Moors continues to enchant all those who experience it, right up to the present day.

Albaicin tour | Neighbourhoods of Granada
The Albaicín is a colourful and charming traditional neighbourhood set in the very heart of Granada. Made up of a network of winding streets and small squares rising up on a hill facing the Alhambra, the area is bordered by the Darro River and by the commercial centre of the city.
Once the site of the Moorish citadel, the Alcazaba, the area still retains a sense of its past in its architecture - many of the churches were built on the foundations of mosques. Today, parts of the Albaicín have taken on a distinctly North African feel with many tearooms and small shops selling Morroccan goods.

Granada, Spain - The Albayzín, historic Moorish neighborhood
We rented an Airbnb home, which had views of The Alhambra from the living room and kitchen. We were right in the heart of the wonderful old Moorish neighborhood called The Albaycin (Albaicin). Spent 3 glorious days there, starting off our 3 week vacation in Andalusia Spain. The views in the upper area of the Albaycin, especially in San Nicolas Plaza, are breathtaking.
