STREET FOOD in ITALY | SICILIAN street food in PALERMO, SICILY
We're in Palermo, Sicily! In this 3 part series we're exploring Palermo to hunt down the best Sicilian food. Palermo has a thriving street food culture that's big on offal and punchy, bold flavours.
This is our first video from Palermo and it's all about Sicilian street food and traditional Sicilian food! We start the day at one of Palermo's most popular local markets- Ballaro Market. Ballaro Market is packed with fresh produce, meat and seafood and has an abundance of ready to eat street foods to sample. Some of Palermo's most beloved street foods are here so we start with frittula. Frittula is a snack you won't find elsewhere in Italy it's made up of leftover scraps from a calf carcass that are boiled and then fried in lard. Next up it's time for some seafood- pulpo or octopus simply boiled and served with a squeeze of lemon and sardine rolled and stuffed with breadcrumbs, pine nuts, parsley and raisins. Before leaving the market we eat some snails- babalucci which are cooked in garlic and parsley. They're mouthwatering! We head for more food at one of our favourite trattoria's which is close to the market for some seafood pastas- swordfish and eggplant spaghetti for Thomas and cuttlefish and cuttlefish ink spaghetti for Sheena. Finally, we head to a famous local bakery to sample some Sicilian sweets for which the island is well known. #streetfooditaly #sicilianfood #sicilyfood
We hope you enjoyed this Sicilian street food video, thanks for watching!

Places to see in ( Palermo - Italy ) Mercato Ballaro
Ballarò is a well-known historical market of Palermo , together with others called Vucciria , Il Capo , Lattarini and the Mercato delle Pulci . The permanent market stretches from Piazza Casa Professa to the ramparts of Corso Tukory towards Porta Sant'Agata. The market is famous for selling the first fruits that come from the countryside of Palermo . Ballarò is the oldest of the city's markets, frequented daily by hundreds of people, animated by the so-called abraded , that is by the noisy calls of the sellers who, with their characteristic and colorful local accent, try to attract the interest of passersby. It looks like a cluster of stalls stalls and with the street invaded by wooden boxes that contain the goods that is continuously screamed, banned , singed to advertise the good quality and good price of the products. Ballarò is a mainly food market, mainly used for the sale of fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, but there are also household items for cooking and cleaning the house, as in the Capo and Vucciria markets .
Inside the market greengrocers selling cooked food and street food , typical of the cuisine of Palermo , such as onions, boiled or baked, fritters ( pancakes of flour of chickpeas ), croquettes or cazzilli (croquette potatoes ), vegetables boiled, octopus , quarume ( veal entrails ), sandwich with meusa (spleen).
The heart of the Albergheria district , the Ballarò market is so called by Bahlara , a village near Monreale where the Arab merchants came from, or from Vallaraya , the name of an Indian king of the Deccan region . According to others the name Ballaro 'is of German origin, Ferdinand Ballaro' was the captain of King Ferdinand of Aragon in Palermo in 1400; it is also said that the market is called Ballaro 'because the Ballaro family collected on the account of the King of Spain a percentage of sales of food products sold at the Ballaro market. Or even that, in relation to the etymology of the name of this typically Arabic market, Ballarò would derive from Souk el Ballarak , market of mirrors in Arabic.
Snaking for several city blocks southeast of Palazzo dei Normanni is Palermo's busiest street market, which throbs with activity well into the early evening. It's a fascinating mix of noises, smells and street life, and the cheapest place for everything from Chinese padded bras to fresh produce, fish, meat, olives and cheese – smile nicely for un assaggio (a taste).

Piazzetta Mediterraneo (quartiere Albergheria a Palermo) 5.6.2011

Suk all'Albergheria(www.gds.it)

3 Affordable Restaurants in Palermo – And What You Need to Know
It’s your old friend Nico here to tell you some quick things you should know about before you indulge in the cheap eats of Palermo. You can find out these stops by clicking on this link:
You know you can trust me, right? So before you dive into these eateries – take a minute to hear what I have to say.
The first thing is that all of these places were cheap and tasty enough to win over Mr. Scrooge, or rather my business partner, Francesco. He is the cheapest man in Italy. Because menu prices and offerings change like the stock numbers on Wall Street, you will see some places that once offered good food at low prices and tomorrow you can’t afford the meal and it isn’t that good to begin with. It is bipolarity at its best here in Palermo.
Second, you really should know by now that cheap and tasty food does not come without some level of compromise or disappointment. You might deal with slower service with less employees, or a location that is less than ideal, or even the limited menu options. If you decided – ‘hey I’m coming to Sicily and I don’t want to compromise at all on food’, then don’t be cheap like Francesco and choose other spots.
If you are not feeling adventurous about whatever a waiter might bring you, learn a little about Palermo cuisine before you go. Most of the menus are not in English and the waiters have difficulty speaking it clearly.
I feel it's important to note that I made a travel guide that shows you around my beloved Palermo through dozens of short videos. You can take it like I’m grabbing you by the hand and showing you the best places, foods, and tips to make the trip as great as possible. This is information that only the locals know. Want to get the most out of your stay? Check out this video travel guide – you can find the link for it in the description.
That’s all I got for you today. You can look in the description for all of the links I promised.
