Alberni Pacific steam train ride Port Alberni, Vancouver island 2007
Take a train ride on the Alberni Pacific railway located on Vancouver island, Canada. The train leaves Port Alberni and ends at the McLean mill which is Canada's only steam powered sawmill. The steam locomotive is a 1929, Baldwin, 2-8-2T, built for use as a logging locomotive. Canada's is know for it's beautiful steam locomotives and this one is no exception. This locomotive has stainless steel side rods probably due to the constant rain on Vancouver island. Sorry I didn't get to film the saw mill more but my camcorder battery died. Filmed in August, 2007.
Alberni Valley tourist attraction flying away
PORT ALBERNI - One of the largest tourist attractions in the Alberni Valley is flying away. For decades, Sproat Lake has been home to the world's only two Martin Mars Bomber airplanes.
People have flocked to the Valley to catch a glimpse of the rare planes leaving its base to fight forest fires around B.C.
But the base is now closing to tourists.
The group that owns the planes, the Coulson Group, have sold one of the Mars planes, the Phillipines Mars, to the National Naval Aviation Museum in Florida. The plane had been out of commission for the last five years and used strictly for tours.
The other plane, The Hawaii Mars, will be contracted out to the provincial government to help fight fires this year. This means the base will lie empty for many days this summer. Because of this, the Coulson Group has decided to close the museum located at the base and cancel any future public tours of the facility.

Discover Vancouver Island. The scenery is amazing with towering Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar which attracted early loggers, though by the number of logging trucks it's still an important part of the economy. Then there are those mountains and inlets, rivers that had salmon spawning in the late summer and fall, all in all a very pretty drive.
